Stargate Moving To SCI FI

The SCI FI Channel has completed a deal with MGM Television to pick up Stargate SG-1 from Showtime for a sixth season and to produce 22 new episodes, SCI FI president Bonnie Hammer announced. The series, which stars Richard Dean Anderson, will begin airing original episodes on SCI FI in June 2002.

Stargate SG-1 is the third MGM series to find a home on SCI FI. The channel is currently airing new episodes of The Outer Limits and previously produced 22 new episodes of Poltergeist: The Legacy.

Production on the new season of Stargate SG-1, which is currently airing its fifth season on Showtime and its fourth in syndication, is slated to begin January 2002 in Vancouver, the network announced. SCI FI will also air reruns of the show on weekdays, beginning with season one, starting in the fourth quarter 2002.

Stargate SG-1, based on the hit 1994 feature film Stargate, stars Anderson as Air Force Col. Jack O'Neill and debuted on Showtime in 1997. It centers on the Stargate, an ancient portal that allows instantaneous travel across the galaxy. O'Neill and Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) explore the uncharted regions of the universe, searching for clues to save the Earth from destruction. The series also stars Amanada Tapping, Christopher Judge, Don S. Davis and Teryl Rothery and is executive produced by Brad Wright, Jonathan Glassner, Robert Cooper, Michael Greenburg and Anderson.

This is awesome news. I knew that Sci-Fi had the syndication rights in 2002 but I didn't know they were looking at actually fiming original episodes.

I assume all the actor's contracts are up after the original 5-season deal; any news if the whole cast is coming back?

BTW, keep in mind that the new movie, Stargate 2, will also be based on the SG-1 series.

That is good news. I think they need more episodes on the Asgardians. I also think SG1 better bring back some weapons from somewhere to use on the bad guys. Zat guns and P-90s are not going to cut it much longer.

Sorry, I don't have any more specific details as of yet. I'm sure more will be revealed before the sixth season premiere of SG-1 this coming June.

Well in season 3 the Tokra supply them with some energy weapons and invisibility/cloaking detectors... And unlike Trek these weapons show up from time to time...

So they're there.

Anyway, why wont Zats cut it? Think about it.
1 shot - Its down.
2 shots - Its dead, usually.
3 shots - vaporise...

You cant get much better... Not even with a staff weapon.

Zats, to me, have 2 disadvantages:

1. They're loud. (They seem that way to me.)
2. They're single-shot with a low rate-of-fire. (Translation, if you miss you're FUBAR.)

Plus, say you have to blow something up--a Zat isn't going to cut it. I'd much rather have a staff weapon.

Zats are good but slow fire and close range. I was talking about something to stop a major invasion, like gliders, they had one once and lost it. It was pre programed to exit the solar system or something. Or the planet defence system used by the advanced race that won't share weapons. Excuse me for not being exact but I dont have a enclyclodedia to refer to. That would be an idea!!!

But anyway, what does it take to get advanced weapons to defend Earth!!! Steal them? Hey didn't that happen once, yes, from the race that won't share weapons. We saved them from the bad guys during the trial to see if the snake had a right to choose. Or was that Star Trek TNG, Data.
And they still would not share weapons!!

No really, I have seen every SG1 episode!! I recall what happened but not the terminoligy. thats what happens when you get old. But SG1 has come accross some dynomite stuff only to loose it, give it back or leave it behind. Maybe the Russians have a more defensible and agressive way to run the Star Gate. Sounds harsh but what are the alternatives. Too Bad the Klingons don't have a Star Gate.....Sorry.

The Earth really doesn't need any advanced weapons to defend the planet itself. The Asgard negoiated a treaty with the System Lords that Earth was off-limits. If any system lord moves against it they would have at least one Asgard battle cruiser to contend with, the Valisna (sp? I don't have a reference) Thor's flag ship alone would be a match for any Goul'd attack fleet. Even more so if they have built another of the "O'Neil"-class of advanced warship.

The only thing keeping, as they say, Asgard from a more active role is the "race" of mechanoids that has invaded their space, one reason for the treaty, Thor knew until the Mechanoid threat to his people was dispensed with, they would be unable to help if the System Lords moved on Earth. So, they "stop-gapped" the problem. Since the treaty doesn't include humans taken on while off-world I would say that the need for small arms, if you can call a staff weapon a "small arm, should take precedence.

Agreed! The Asgard can protect Earth if they are available. At one time they barely came to Earths aid before we were destroyed. And Staff weapons and Zats are good for close defense or close offense. But Earth needs to protect itself without relielying on others to come to its aid. It needs to stand alone, to speak it's own intrests. It can't do this if it is dependant on others. We need better weapons to defend the planet. And what I am saying is that SG1 could provide this defense system if they would bring back these weapons from their missions instead of basing it on offending other worlds. The ulitimate defense of the Earth is at steak.!!

That is one of the up shots of SG-1: the writers remember what is where and who has what and when it took place and who was involved and all that canon type stuff. The biggest advantage SG-1 has over convential sci-fi is that it is truly internally consistent.

I agree, if other systems help us stand on our feet we might be able to help them in the future! The US has given many weapons systems to other nations to help them stand on their feet and not be so relaint on other nations. This in turn will help the US in the future, maybe in minor or major ways.
The same should be said about Earth. If another world helps us do you think that we are going to set idle if they are attacked.

We have already helped the Asgard fend off the metal insects. Give us more and we can do more in the long run. This should be the mission of every world fighting the Ga'old.

I agree, but you have to take in the designed use of the weapon. Yes, it is loud so is a staff weapon. The Zat is, usually, used to bring a target down alive with one shot, it just has the added benefit of killing on the second.

INMO, you would think R&D would have a few ideas about new weapon systems by now.

No such organisation. It has been confirmed that all tech, non-sentient biologics and knowledge runs through Area 51.

Which is also the current home of the two damaged death gliders they escpaed Apophis's assault in.

They also confirm that since the second series there has been a steady income of new alloys, medicenes, technology and knowledge, along with diplomatic contact and historical study.

Hell, they've even developed a complete circuit diagram of a DHD and mapped several hundred new Stargates not on the Abidos maps/address listings.

Bloody hell you can tell that I have just spent the last fortnight watching every episode on DVD from the pilot to end of series 3. (And Series 4 just starting on Cable...) http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif

But the question is:

Why not re-surrect good old Spartan/Sprint with some 100kt nuke. After all it seems a meekly 30 pound warhead on an AAM is already quite dangerous. Or ask other races for "out-moded" technologie. After all a fusion reactor should be to them what the first ICE engines are to us http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif

As for internal consistency, yes StarGate is nice. They even make multi-season references quite correctly (we currently have seasons 4 and 2 in parallel running one after the other)


Btw. does the AIM-120A have vector steering? Always thought it was fin-steered and thereby useless in space.

Didn't Earth try to take out a mother ship with nuclear missles about two or three seasons ago. If I recall this giant ship, there may have been two, was about to attack earth and was commanded by Appophis.

The nukes did not work and O'Neal and team had to distroy it(or them) from within. If nukes with a megaton yeald did not work then weapons with a kilaton yeald would not even get their attention!!

We need much better weapons for planitary defence!

Two weeks ago we in germany saw the show where they tried out "their" new space/orbital fighter and Carter said something about " enhanced warheads" on an AIM-120 Scorpion (Missile shown was a Scorpion also) that can harm a small mothership and thats about 30pf. So maybe the original nukes where to weak.

So maybe a SPARTAN with an enhanced warhead (original is 100KT/60s => around 600pf)will cut it. On the other hand that would kill some nice plots so better not. For my RPG session so...

I know this is somewhat out of the scope of the series, but new tech would take awhile to learn how to use. Perhaps, they are training new SG teams in the use of new items and we may see some new troop types before the series is over.

I sure hope something happens before the series is over. I mean a united front against these A Holes that have been terrorizing the universe for how many thousand years. After all this time I hope when the last episode comes around there is a conclusion. I hope it dosn't just stop, Man! that would really frost my hide!!!

Maybe the builders of the Star Gates will return and tune the bad guys up.
Maybe that will happen in the SG1 movie!!!

A Question..I probably ust forgot...getting old, but when they go through the Star Gate are they just going to other planets in the Milky Way or are they also going to other planets in other Galaxies..big difference between the two.

From what I can figure out from the charts that have been on the show, it appears to me that the Stargate network links planets within our own galaxy. Im not an astronomer by any means, well low end of the amauter level maybe, so if anyone else can shed more light...I like to hear it too. http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif

I haven't seen the episode, but supposedly in this episode SG-1 find the planet of the Ancients (the guys who built the Stargates) and find a way to use an 8th chevron and dial. This 8th chevron is supposed to act like an 'area code' chevron when dialing, letting you (presumably) go to other galaxies.

Perhaps someone who's seen this episode can go into more detail.

OK Don. As Requested.

Spoiler notice for everyone else. Consider yourself warned and if you dont want to know stop reading here...

The SG1 team find themselves in a weird location, exiting the gate into a room with no exit, apart from the Gate and DHD.

Through various means they find a hole in the wall. And looking into it O'Neill finds himself grabbed and subjected to a weird kaliedoscope.

Returning to the SGC its not long before O'Neill starts blabbering some weird languages to the exclusion of all else.

While Sam, Teal'c and Daniel all try to figure whats happening O'Neill starts building, but has no idea what. Shrugging whenever anyone asks what it is.

Sam and Teal'c think they find a clue, and head off with another SG team but find themselves trapped on a burning planet with a damaged DHD.

Daniel, by this time has become convinced that Jack is speaking the language of the ancients and has had their knowledge dropped into his brain. This is proved when he draws a circuit diagram of a DHD and they send it through the gate to allow Sam, Teal'c and the other SG team to excape certain death.

Next we find Jack, uncontrollably typing coordinates into the main computer. Hammond becomes worried that Jack has actually become an unwitting saboteur when the bases computers go down. But soon the processing lag time finishes and they find that Jack has just entered the addresses of several more Stargates not matching those found on the Abidos cartouche.

However Jacks not finished yet. Attaching the device he built to the bases power supply he multiplies available power astronomically, and enables the eigth chevron (which correctly is like a galaxy area code), and opens the gate to the Asgard homeworld, where he negotiates with Thor and opens up the plot for several series 4 and 5 episodes...

Last night on StarGatethe Tollans begin to share weapons technology with Earth. They were the ones who refused to share before.

It turns out that they only wanted to share because they wanted some stuff in return to develope better weapons and the weapons they were going to give us were obsolete.

Anyway it turns out that tey were working with the bad guys and in the end are destroyed....Whops...Sorry.

WE NEED BETTER WEAPONS FOR PLANITARY DEFENCE!
