Losing the faith...

What does one do when one no longer feels any interest in Star Trek? I don't want this to happen, it has just slowly crept upon me over the last few months. The BBC has treated Star Trek very badly recently, taking it off for every sporting event they show. As ITV Digital has gone bankrupt, I no longer have Sky One. The only station that has Star Trek is Channel 4 and they show Enterprise, which I don't happen to like. They do, however, give a series the treatment it deserves.
Has anyone else ever had this problem? Is there a way to fix it?
I realise the irony of posting this on a Star Trek RPG board, but I firmly believe that the people here are well rounded individuals and have diverse opinions.

This is why I am buying or taping as much Star Trek as I can, so at least I can watch the reruns :)

Maybe that owuld eb the way to go. Especially in Europe where you guys have way more episodes on VHS thatn we do in NorAm

Seriously, revisiting episodes which sparked one's interest in Trek is quite helpful.

Just out of curiousity, Joe, do your DVDs offer German dubs or subtitling?

I have the same feelings as well. However, I refuse to pay the amount of money for the TNG seasons on DVD, or would if I had a DVD player (I do plan on getting one in the few months.) I don't see paying the money for the few eps I really like and getting a truck load of the ones I don't. Enterprise hoolds no interest for, watched an ep tonight and laughed at some really funny sci-errors that were made...My favourite being a highly trained Starfleet Engineer (a graduate of the Academies Honours Biology) saying that hair and finger nails keep growing after death. Whoever wrote this ep needs do some homework. Jeez!

Oh well, as I have always said "at least there's SG-1."

Heck, I've rarely had any strong feelings for Trek. To be honest, I watched it because there was damn little sci-fi of any sort on tv back then. Let's face it, even Next-G looks good next to Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century or Battlestar Galactica, and Max Headroom had way too short of a run. Granted, I mainly came to fandom from the gaming side of things anyhow, but media sci-fi really proves Sturgeon's Law: 90% of sci-fi is c**p. But then, 90% of everything is c**p.

The writer is not in error. He or she just did not provide all the details. It is a proven scientific fact that human fingernails and hair continue to grow for a time after death has occurred. The amount of nail and hair growth after death is one of many clues which allow forensic detectives to determine time of death in an investigation.

I lost enthusiasm for Star Trek about midway through TNG, although I gave it further chances each time a new series began. I still enjoyed the films, for the most part, but Babylon 5 had replaced Trek on television as far as I was concerned. I owned most of the TNG materials published by LUG until early this year when, after my divorce, I culled my game collection to raise much needed cash for medical bills.

My enthusiasm was renewed when I laid my hands on the new rules. I'm now in a campaign, and watch Trek whenever I can. I just wish DS9 was in syndication here in North America, as TNG and Voyager are. I won't be able to see episodes in the order they were originally aired, alas, but I can always purchase or borrow the DVD collections when they are released. Now if something would restore my faith in Glorantha...

Actually the Stright Dope answere dthis one, and they do not continue to grow. What happens is the skin receeds giving the impression of growth.

Hollywood and bad PI novels are the culprit for the misconception. :)

AH picking up the line and then fumbling it hurt, but the HeroWars stuff has utterly killed it.

Oh, forgot to answer the main point...

It's funny, but I lost more faith by dealing with Trekkies than with the shows themselves (although Voyager really did a trip on me and I have not seen an episode of Enterprise due to no longer owning a television).

Somehow, though, my core belief remains pretty stable. Why? Because I like the hopeful nature of the series.

Okay, the acting can get cheesy and the plots are often a mess, but the overall message that we can eventually solve our problems still comes through for me.

I keep the faith, but not the canon. :D

I was a fan as a kid, but as I got older, Trek lost a lot for me -- after Khan, it was really kitch -- especially bringing Spock back. That was it for me. I watched TNG because it was the only real sci-fi at the time.

I didn't watch DS9 or Voyager because overall, Bab 5 was better sotrytelling. My interest in sci-fi has pretty much waned. Not much you can do about it. I just embrace my new interests.

I've gained an interest in the universe as a RPG, but I don't bother much with canon because...well, it's fiction, it's our game, we do what we want.

The point? Don't fight it. If you're losing interest, find something else to charge yourself on.

Both.

5 languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish) and 10 sets of subtitles (In addition to the languages above: English for the hearing-impaired, Danish, Dutch, Norsk (sp?), Swedish).

I've played Trek RPGs on and off for the past 11 years or so, and yeah, every now and then "the love" gets away from me and I need a break to go do something else, be it Star Wars or D&D or something else. Somehow I always come back to Trek though, for one reason or another.

I watch the episodes (starting to get TNG on DVD and am getting DS9 tapes), I watch the movies, I flip through the Encyclopedia and other books, I re-read the LUG and Coda rules. Eventually ideas will spark, and I'm off and running.

As of right now, I haven't played or ref'ed a Trek game for a couple years, mostly because I've been running Star Wars steadily. I need a break from SW, and right now Trek or LOTR is going to be the next game (and both are Coda, how about that?). :)

I'm also writing Trek short stories for Pocket Books' Strange New Worlds contest and watching DS9 episodes as they arrive from Columbia House. The enthusiasm is there, and I will likely start searching for players soon, for a one-shot test game. From there, I'll either open up a new Trek campaign or try out LOTR when it comes out.

So, read books, watch movies and episodes, and most of all, take an evening to get outside and just look up at the stars and think of all the adventures they hold. :)

I understand you situation. I live in southern Missouri and they took away Voyager after the first season, and it went to UPN. We have no such station. I loved Voyager in the beginning. So I know how you feel. But remember buy the DVD's they are great. There's all the original series and starting to have TNG. And lastly.

Watch Enterprise. It may not be classic Trek but it grows on you.

I love Hero Wars (soon to be relaunched as HeroQuest), personally, having long ago decided that RuneQuest was terribly outdated and not particularly versatile. The difficulty of starting and maintaining a Gloranthan campaign is what has me depressed.
