I never get to play

So my Bi-Weekly Friday night group got together last night and we went around the table to see what we wanted to play after Star Wars (which one of the players is running).

So it cames down to each of us saying what we wanted to play. When it go to be my turn (most of the group was already leaning towards D&D) I made mention of how the only game I ever really, really, really want to play is Star Trek. How I would love to be a player in a Star Trek game.

Well...looks like I will be running D&D for them.

Which will be fun... and once I watch LOTR a few more times I will be really stoked... but I really wanted to try out a centre seat.

Sigh...

Yeah, I had to really work to get my group to accept a Star Trek game. Out of my five gamers, two were dead set against it due to Hard Science thoughts and one because he was upset that Starfleet wasn't militaristic enough.

Took me 3 months and a mini-Star Wars campaign (run by one of the others) to wear them down.

Now they love it. :D

Sometimes it just takes pure perseverence...

I'm on the Kansas side (obviously!) in Miami county (about half an hour to 45 minutes south of the Battlezone on W 95th), specifically Paola :p (smallville of the universe!)

Why not try something like this. 'Your are in a dark dungeon, the walls are wet and ugly. There are torches in unregular distances and you hear slight steps ahead of you. Suddenly a voice says: Lt. Jones to the bridge, so you deactivate the Holodeck and leave for the bridge.'
Maybe you can overwhelm them that way ;)

I LOVE to play Star Trek. I LOVE being Captain, Helmsman, whatever :)

But my group just doesn't have any Star Trek narrators in it, other than me :(

So I am the main narrator for the group and they all agreed on D&D, so I am going to do D&D, but I really would rather be a player in a Star Trek game.

Sigh...

OKay I am done feeling sorry for myself.

you guys are lucky!

I would love to be in a role playing game, Star Trek or whatever, although I would live to be in a Star Trek game, but I don't know of any gaming group in the area I live! All my friends who used to play RPG's have been scattered to the four corners of the country and there is a sickening degree of apathy and elitism here.

I suppose that's why I haven't bought the CODA Trek yet, as much as I would like to........what's the point of buying a game when you have no one else to play it? (sound of mournful violins in the background).

God knows I have tried to drum up some interest in Star Trek, but as one of my friends said, they prefer to play action packed Sci-Fi role plays without thinking of the after effects of their actions (Star Wars, Fading Suns).

All I can do is float on these boards and muse about what I'm missing. :(

If people are reluctant to play because 'there isn't enough action in Star Trek', try asking them if they saw the beginning of the sixth season of DS9 (or the ending of the seventh). If they say no, tell them that they need to revise their opinions because the Dominion War changed to face of 'peaceful' Star Trek.

Now, Star Trek's philosophy hasn't changed, of course, but if people like action-packed RPGs with lots of battle, just run through the Dominion War - Fires of Armageddon book. If they think Starfleet doesn't have hard enough weapons, just show them Spacedock. And best of all, both of these can be downloaded for free ;)

well, i'm suffering of a stranger problem, doctor....
there's someone else in my gaming group who has the ICON version of STRPG but, after i ran a 30-adventures campaign, he refuses to run one because he thinks he can't compare to me !!! then my group asks me to run another one...

what should i do ???

run a poor campaign, reducing my "god-level" so my friend will dare run his ?

run a campaign the way i did the other one, effectively ruining my chances to play someday ??

Please, help me, i don't know what i can do....:D :D :D

steelvow, you could suggest your friend to run a trial game, to see how he fares. A good thing for that is the "holodeck story", with the characters being for instance on a StarFleet training holoprogram (that way they can't affect their environment like on a normal holodeck, but they don't risk their lives either). After that, your friend could see how exactly he compares to you.

I also fall into the caegory of not being allowed to play. I have a regular group that constantly want to make new characters.. every three or four games they decide to play something different. They suggest what they want to play. So while they make characters I try and build a game. But it seems that I am the only one who ever gm's. I have a second goroup that is into campaigns but that group only meets once a month. and then I get to play.. the first group ususlly meets every week.

Race for Starfleet is open to Andorian, Bajoran, Benzite, Betazoid, Bolian, Centauran, Grazerite, Human, Napean, Tellarite, Tiburonian, Trill, Vulcan, Zakdorn as well as Racially-Mixed. There are other races for civilian types.

We limit rank to Lieutenant JG for junior officers and Lt for Senior Officers (which is obtainable only through in-character promotions). I honestly think it is more fun to start as an Ensign and work your way up the ladder in-character - it gives one something to shoot for.

If you log in and check the staff list (type +staff), you are welcome to ask for assistance. Our players, too, are knowledgeable and helpful (though they can't answer questions with difinity as staff can). I know that the process is overwhelming, but the extensive character creation process keeps out the riff-raff. If you're serious about wanting to play though, you'll make it. If your application is denied, my staff will always let you know what needs to be fixed.

We're going to be holding an Open House in October that will allow people to visit, assume a stock character, and play on the grid without the lengthy chargen process. I think if you get a taste of our own brand of roleplay, you'll want to stick around. :) We will also be holding the largest episode in Anomaly's history: four writers all running the same plot in our story-arc: the battle for Occa Prime against the Jem'Hadar.

To check out some of our episodes (we log everything!) and how we play, head to the web page and click on 'Log Entries'. Those are our episodes over the past three years. Anomaly has a difinitive story-arc that is being played out, it isn't just random events. The most recent episodes are stored on the game itself until ready to be printed to HTML.

I wouldn't mind an Elaysian - I know they're your favorite race (unless I'm confusing you with someone else - maybe it was Lt Khrys Antos). While there isn't one in our list of statted races, some sort of accomodation can be made if you're interested in playing one on Anomaly.

You weren't confusign me with someone else. I'm the Elaysian nut :D. I'd probably be content to play a Vulcan (once I sit down & create one) until Elaysians become available (take your time, no rush!)

Sharing the pain

I so know how it goes. I am the narrator for my groups Trek campaign. I actually am not happy being the narrator. But I do enjoy the comraderie of our group so I keep trying to come up with new challenges. I want to play the game, I don't care what position I play, I just wanna play and not have to worry about running the blasted game.

I guess I'm stuck though. My friends are addicted to the storyline I have created, and there doesn't seem to be any way out for me. "Doomed I tell you. Doomed."

I just read the LOTR RPG. Nice, but if I want to play fantasy I will use D&D, no point in reinventing the wheel now is there? ;)

The game looks great, but I find traipsing around in Mr. Tolkien's universe only slightly more miring than Mr. Rodenberry's.

No no, my own D&D world shall see the light of day... though I am stealing and modifying the map from Warhammer Fantasy for it. :)

I, too, am one of the lonely unfortunates who never actually gets to play. I've run GURPS,RIFTS,LugTrek, and now I'm trying to decipher ICONTrek (pun intended), as well as WEG Star Wars. I've run groups from 2-19 players since '82, but I haven't been able to sit down and PLAY in almost a decade.
To bend the conversation a little to starboard, I would ask similarly frustrated GMs if you've resorted to obnoxious little things such as introducing your old characters as NPCs and the like. I believe such a thing makes it hard to be impartial during the game, but an OCCASIONAL cameo can spice up a doddering session or even a campaign.

Once, years ago, I started a Marvel Super Heroes game. Within the first 5 minutes I greased an NPC named Gyro. I had played Gryo as a PC for about 5 years at that point, and all my players knew he was my favorite character. As the smoke from his charred body rose, one of the players turned to the others and said "Oh crap, he's really serious tongiht guys."
