What type missions would a base ship ie a Nova go on as opposed to the big ship's like the Galaxy?
I am refferring to the DS9 situation except substituting the Defiant for the Nova.
Isn't a Nova primarily a surveyor/science vessel? Put the starbase on the outskirts of a relatively unexplored sector and let the Nova go out and explore it and come back with samples and research material. The starbase could have labs and such on it.
Some mission ideas:
- Planetary survey
- Stellar phenomenon survey
- Stellar mapping
I'm sure there are tons more ideas. :)
Warning if you play in the Eclipse Campaign. Run by me. Please do not read further. There are spoilers if you do!

Okay, after sufficient warning. Here is the third mission of the series. It is done in the narrator's view. Tell me what you think!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mission Name:
Mission Type: Man vs. Unknown
The crew starts out as being on the Eclipse while at the mouth of the wormhole. The have received orders from the
Admiral to go scout around on the other side for a few days and learn everything they can about the outlying areas.
When the ship goes through the Romulan Ship is still there but this time uncloaked and scanning the second planet. When
the Eclipse reaches the other side they are hailed by the Qenfani flagship.
Zellan: Captain, I would like to request sending a band of observers on your ship to learn about your culture. Would this
be acceptable?
Captain: Yes
The five men beam over and meet with the Captain. Afterwards they start to mingle with the crew while the Eclipse starts
to head to an area referred to as the "ShintiVanogden" Roughly translated it is the dump. This area is so think with gases
and nebulas that it is impossible to hold a stable warp field or to receive communications from ships outside the
shintiVanogden. When the Eclipse dropped out of warp on the edge of the system they head in very slowly. The Qenfani
have never ventured into the ShintiVanogden because they believe that it is such an unholy place.
Sensors TN 15 to detect
There is a large facility that has been ransacked by some unknown force. Everyone aboard was dead and all of the
database was stolen. All that was left were the main computer core, Fusion Reactors, and the built in facilities of the
station. Upon beaming onto the control center of the station they find no bodies or possessions. The computer and
power sources are all offline and there is no trace of who built this or who lived here. Upon further scanning they learn
that the base has a total of 500 decks. Ten decks are a "promenade" with stores and things of that nature. There are two
landing pads for any ship that can land on. 300 decks are for Civlian Quarters and Crew Quarters. There was estimated to
be about one thousand crewmen that worked here and around two thousand civilans. There also is eight shuttle bays that
have an avergae of 10 shuttles in each. There are four docking arms for ships to dock at. Also inside the base can fit four
additional starships that can dock for repairs or whatnot. 100 decks devoted to docking and 100 decks devoted to
Operation's of the base. It is a large base but it also is in perfect working condition except for all of the database
information has been stolen. The PC's find nothing that is of any help to them. After consulting with the Qenfani
representatives the Captain decides to report back to Starbase 113. At the mouth of the wormhole the crew is ready to go
in when a beam from the deflector hits the wormhole and closes both ends. At a loss for what has happened the crew find
the Qenfani Observers to be religious extremists. They have closed the wormhole because it was too devilish. The crew is
now stranded over 40,000 Light years from home. They should head back to the Qenfani homeworld and ask a few
questions.
They learn that the wormhole is indeed artificial and the Qenfani wanted to explore and experiment with their
technology for opening wormholes. They also stated that the wormhole could be reopened but not for atleast a month
because the generators have all been burned out.
The Captain decides that it is best to make a home at the large starbase by towing it out of the ShintiVanogden sector and
closer to the Qenfani homeworld. The crew asks for help from the Qenfani and they gladly help by sending out tugs to
move the starbase the 3 light years to the Quano Sector near the Qenfani homeworld. After the station is moved it is
placed under the command of the Eclipse crew. They now have complete command of the base. The crew decides that is
would be a good thing to let civilians aboard and use it as a trading hub for the sector. It might provide a good first
contact scene. The crew designates the starbase SB001 in honor of the Federation's home.
Just a couple thoughts...if the starbase has 800 decks, I'm sure way more than 3000 people could have been aboard it.
Is the ship going to be stranded out 40,000 LY away for the course of the campaign? If that's the case, will the ship be trying to find its way home?
No the ship will not try to find it's way home. They will explore the outlying areas. Aswell as have the base.
Out of curiosity, why wouldn't the crew want to go home? It's one thing to want to explore the galaxy, but another to be so far from home. How will you convince the PCs that they really don't want to go home?
The Qenfani will be able to reopen the wormhole in a few months. It would not be worthwhile to try and go home when they already have a way home that will be available in a few months.
When the wormhole is closed, will the crew know that they'll be able to get back soon, or will it be a surprise when the Qenfani reopen it?
I ask because I know if I left my old game group stranded 40K LY from home, and didn't tell them they had a way back, they'd spend the rest of the night looking for a way home, regardless of whatever plot I had for them.
They would know because they would take the Observers back to Quano Prime thus the Qenfani will fess up to it being artificial and can reopen it in a few months.
Cool. :)
What would be a good next mission? I am stumped after they get the Starbase
Well, they establish the starbase, which you suggested could be used as a trading hub.
Trading lanes might need to be established, perhaps there are spatial anomalies in the ideal trading lane that need to be clear. Maybe in the process of mapping trading routes they encounter something or another and have to explore it.
Lots of possibilities. :)
Here is one that I thought up.
A lone merchant ship that is technologically advanced. A ship from the Interstellar Empire.
Interstellar Empire
-Similar to the Federation
-Tecnologicaly Similar to the UFP
-Instead of Exploration with peace they Empire is more of Exploration with War and conflict.
-Compromised of fifteen races
This merchant ship is an official ship of the Interstellar Empire that was sent when a cloaked scout vessel detected the presence of a possible enemy of the Empire, The USS Eclipse crew, they have hijacked the Eclipse and all the weapons on the station. Once they have stolen the phasers from the Eclipse they lock onto to all others on the base. This leaves the crew with only two danube class runabouts and one type 9 shuttle. Also there are no hand-held weapons so they must replicate some but the computer does not know the specs.......any comments?
Cool.
Potential later development. The original owners/builders of the station show up, think the PC's are responsible for it's theft, PC's now have to find the real culprits to get them to admit to it.
Or: The original owners evolved into energy forms with no need for physical structures. Only a few generations ago. Some still feel 'attached' to places they lived while organic. "Ghosts" wander dark places in the station.
I like it. You can pull all sorts of ideas from DS9 to use with the new station. Old computer codes hidden in the workings, strange things that happen without easy explanation, etc.
Oh, and if I remember correctly, I don't think hand phasers can be replicated. Seem to recall hearing something about that...
Hand Phasers can be replicated just not with a Federation Replicator because of the security codes. Also I never saw DS9:o....HELP!!!!!!.... that's the part I need help on.
