Starfleet Academy Post DW

As for the reconstruction, okay, but like since Ray Walston died, I am assuming Boothby has passed on as well.

But what other major changes would the war have had on the Academy?

SFA and SF HQ would have been one of the first things rebuilt, I think. A high priority would be replenishing Star Fleet's losses.

As for a Diploma being a selling point? When I offered SFA Graduation certificates after running Red Alert demos, the players looked at me like I was mad. "Do they think we're kids or something?" one asked.

Not saying the diploma was worthless now, just that when I put my books in the bookshelf I'm left with some papers filling nearly empty boxes. Of course by now I own enough that I could probably fill one box with all of it. Better round it up again. My players always end up with so much of my stuff.

I did consider Boothby dying in the attack on the grounds, but if you don't like that, well he is El Aurian (LUG canon) and they do live a darn long time.

As far as the students and the mindset of the campus, here's some tidbits.

Class of '75
This class saw the rise and fall of the Dominion War. Many were unprepared for the dangers that lay ahead and as the four years progressed, the weak-hearted dropped out fearing the chance they'd be sent to the front-lines and killed like all their Starfleet acquaintances.

Class of '80
This group starts off in '77. Many of the upperclassmen joined the Academy not knowing the war would end when it did and hoping to help the Federation by serving on the front lines. Many of them are itching for battle and have a score to settle with anyone involved in the death of their loved ones. "Cardie" is reintroduced as a common handle and though the humanitarian aides are proceeding as planned into their space, an uneasy tension remains for some time for this people.

Tactical is probably a little more popular than usual, so probably a bit harder to apply for. Many are expecting the Dominion to strike, fearing that exploration into the Gamma Quadrant (Read Avatar) will leave them open to a Dominion trap.

There is certainly alot to do involving campus reconstruction. Who knows how many people would be required to replace the great Boothby if that's your aim. You might have an entire club formed to keep the grounds in order. "We never knew he did so much!"

Sisko is as much a name on Earth as it is on Bajor, well maybe not that much, but it still brings business to Sisko's.

Depends on how much you feel they rushed cadets out of SFA into front line positions. If they rushed a lot of people out, then the Academy would be pretty unpopulated.

There would be a lot of new young students (freshmen/plebes/what have you), thanks to patriotic fervor and a need for SFA to take in people to replace the losses.

This necessitates having more instructors to handle the increased cource load.

The relative lack of upper classmen means that some of the instructors may have to switch from "Temporal thermodynamics" to "Intro to Astrophysics" for example. From my personal experiences, having the Dean of Natural Sciences teach you Physical Chemistry after a 20 year lay off is pretty spooky. Imagine if he was teaching Intro to Chemistry. http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif

Also, StarFleet is going to want those "War Commission" officers trained properly, and one good way to learn something is to teach it, so another group of instructors could be returning "War Comissioned" Cadets.

Plus, you can have some Cadets that are full Lieutenants and slightly disgruntled about being "Babies" again, and having to take classes. Imagine the fun you can have by having the players sit next to the Assistant Chief Engineer of the USS Atlon, survivor of the Retaking of Betazed, during "Intro to Star Fleet Tactics". http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif

I like it. Still, that'd make you pretty popular wouldn't it. Not 25 and you're already telling war stories.

It really feels like a serious issue. What I thought that would deeply affect the SFA courses was the rebuilding of the campus. They had to relocate the cadets in training (those who survived to that attack) to other SFA facilities. The rebuilding of the Academy (and the whole San Francisco city) could have taken as much as 6 months until the campus was ready to receive students again.

Maybe lots of them were resent to the SFA branches on their home planets, which could lead to a batch of very nationalistic ensigns, like they were trained for their own Planetary forces. Imagine an Andorian trained on the Epsilon Indii SF Academy, for example.

So I recieved my copy of Starfleet Academy today, and first off let me say what a tremendous supplement this is. Nice box, excellent layout and design and the information very useful thus far.

But now it has inspired me to run a Starfleet Academy campaign, but I am curious as to how the war affected the Campus and what it owuld be like in say 2377 or so?

Any ideas folks?

Hey, this reminds me – I have the diploma in high-res PDF format. Would anyone like it put online so they can make their own diplomas?

LUG would never let me put it online -- they claimed it was “a selling point of the boxed set.” I pointed out that no where on the shrink wrapped box does it even mention that a diploma is enclosed. http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif

Diploma a selling point. Tsh. That's the first thing I unloaded on my players and they probably still have it sitting under a stack of boxes or holding their monitor up or something.

At any rate, I don't know if anyone here has had a good idea as to the effect the Breen attack had on the grounds, but that was in '75 so by '77 if any buildings were leveled you'd probably see the beginnings of some real reconstruction going on.

I would assume you could get some decent funding for such things being that it is Starfleet Academy, regardless of the resource shortage going on throughout the Quadrant. SFA would get priority second to Starfleet Command itself.

And for the Breen to have made it that far I assume the Mars Defense Perimeter took a beating as well... anyway.

Would they make the 'rushed' cadets undergo more training? Especially at the academy?

Perhaps some extra training/courses of study on tour?

First off I am a "The Acadmay is NOT the only source of officer (or enlisted) person"

Having Commissioned officers return because their substandard. Ya thats popular in a fleet that is undermaned. Anyways once a commission is given you don't take it away Think this would be like a college coming and saying to you five years after graduation. "We think your education was not proper so give us your BA and while let you take the new classes so you can ern a real degree"

As to the rushed classes same applys though historically I do recall that West Point did have the class of 1920 and 21 return to finish out there academic courses only (they were not considered Cadets), but that was optional.

The big thing the Acadamy would face is that with the classes being graduated so fast a chance of lossing the traditions of the acadamy is possible. So any post war commadante would focus on that aspect a lot.

Another would be decreased enrollment, with everybody friends in the Alpha quadrant now the image of a threat is low and civilian practice promising so why join Starfleet?.

Course wise this would be a great time at the acadamy, the lessons of the war are bing digested, maverick professors, freash from the front are pushing for changes in the curricullum to meet real needs. Cadets who will not have to deal with the abstract concept of the Defense mission as it will be very real to them. Science Officer courses might face a temporiary decline for a few years.

Has the diploma ever been made available in pdf format back then and if so is it still out there to get? As I only have the one in my Academy box as well! It would be very cool indeed...:cool:
