Other Aliens vs. Trek Aliens

hey folks. I'm just curious to know whether any of you have ever worked aliens from other genre shows into your Trek game? I'm considering doing this in mine, but haven't really planned it out too much. The way I look at it, its a big galaxy, and if you travel far enough, you're bound to run into a Dalek or a Cylon or a Peacekeeper at some point.

Personally, I'd love to see a showdown between the Cybermen and the Borg! After all, they're both basically the same concept, just developed a different way.

Not that I'd do anything silly like that in my game, of course... :)

To answer your question, yes there are people here that have and still do use lifeforms from other scifi shows. Not too long ago there was this thread on the aliens from Gene's Andromada, I've also worked up a species that looks like the worms from MIB (prior to seeing the second movie...they just got silly in that one).

And as far as your game getting silly...hey it's your game have fun with it.

Using the Delvians, Sheyang, Vorcarians, and Nebari from Farscape. Mehook from the old Fusion comic book. Gonna use the Kaminoans from AOTC -- love the look of them.

I have used...

Vagr (Traveller) - Make great pirates, fit into Trek perfectly. (Bet they'd fit into Star Wars as well). Basically they are "uplifted" from Terran wolves and have no level of government higher than a pack.

Daleks - A visit to the planet Skaro in the aftermath of a great war between the Dals and the Thals (used Hartnell's Dalek's)

Ul-Mor (Star Frontiers) - A race of telepathic, desert-dwelling octupi. I plopped them on a world which they were being forced to share with Vulcanoids from Vulcans colonizing period.

Yazirians (Star Frontiers) - Monkey-men with wing-like membrane between their arms and legs allowing them to glide.


Though I didn't use them in Trek, the Desert Runners of TSR's old Buck Rogers XXVc RPG worked well in my Star Wars game.

I'd thought about this as well, but then I decided to stay away from the more 'obvious' Doctor Who critters, mostly because in my local sci fi fan group, I'm sort of known as the Who guru, and run a monthly Doctor Who night at my place. I was afraid people would find it a bit predictable for me to use Daleks! ;)

I am considering, however, using some less obvious Who races as encounters for my crew. I'm particularly drawn to the Draconians, with their slightly Oriental society of honour and martial rituals. They were one of the few creatures in the Pertwee era that really looked great. If i were to ever do an alternate Earth thing (which is highly unlikely), I would use the Silurians and Sea Devils. I also thought I might use the Movellans at some point, just so I could have my crew fight an army of Rick James supafreaks. Well, okay, maybe not! :)

But the Cybermen would be fun, and would be an interesting alternative to the Borg. The cool thing about the original Cyberman concept is that they weren't really bad guys ... they were a threat, because of the measures they were taking to keep their planet alive, but they weren't necessarily bad. That's what I loved so much about the Vidiians. They were motivated and desperate, and definitely a threat, but not evil. Plus they were creepy as all get-out. I loved that scene where the Vidiian doctor comes in to see Torres, and he's wearing the dead security guy's face...

Some Lovecraftian "races" may make an appearance, if I decide to use an arc I have in mind.

And I plan to use The Masters (Skloodzoi) from the John Christopher books (The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, The Pool of Fire) -- with some tweaks and updates: my version never crossed space, because they are terrified of leaving the ground. Instead, they developed a sort of long range transporter that operates on a different principle from the Federation (and known species) devices. And, of course, they have their mind control technology and their peculiar shape, physiological requirements, and travel machines.

Normally as far as ripping off somebody elses scifi work, what I do is take two (or more) ideas from other geneirs (sp?) and combine them...examples the base concept of Niechiens from Andromanda, add some governmental and cultural elements from the Battletech Clans, throw in a dash of mirror universe escapies and I have a new protagonist. Another one I use, the little 'Worm Guys' from MIB (the first movie only), bits of Hynirian from Farscape, and a little bit of Dark Sider from Andromada - basic end result little, curious, untrustworthy, no social taboos type aliens that have a nack for engineering and getting into trouble...generally pains in the back side, but no real threat. One other alien I took the little information I could find on the computer game ST: Invasion's species Kam'Jehtae, then fleshed them out with a watered down version of the Shadows for B5.

DELVIANS
Personality: Spiritual and pacifistic.

Physical Description: Blue-skinned humanoids, usually hairless, but occasionally sporting white, thick hair. They are actually plant-forms, with no bones or cartilaginous structures. They are peaceful, save for when they are deprived of food, then they begin to bud, releasing spores that cause allergic reactions in most mammals. After several days of starvation, the Delvian loses all conscious thought, becoming paranoid and aggressive until they eat meat product.

Culture: A proud, acquisitive race that were wrenched out of the early industrial era by the crash landing of a Tauma spacecraft. A technological and weapons race ensued and the Sheyang have advance to early stellar levels of technology.

Language: Sheyang, Kolari, Taumat

Unfortunatly the genocide still stands. Slowing reproduction via birth control is OK with voluntary systems (such as the Pill, Condom, etc)... But a chemical form of Birth control would have to have either a random element (ie stops reproduction 9 times out of 10) that would make it pretty much non-existant (as in, the random element, while being beyond our current science# could easily fail to implement any noticable change), or would sterilise the population, thus killing off the species after the current generation... Possibly you failed to explain your plan well enough...

All this aside, have you thought about using a J-Park plot element and bringing the bugs back on the Chaos Theory 'Life will find a way' clause?

# = I said our science, not treks, while the only 'random element' escience seen so far was proto-matter, and the effect of that would also match the genocide comment from our viewing experience with Genocide... I am not saying it doesn't exist at all, simply that its never seen...

I can't say that I really use any other aliens from other series. I mostly either use what is there or I make my own. This is a longer process but I feel it is worth it after I have finished.

I once used the aliens. From 'Aliens'. Complete with molecular acid for blood. If you shot them with the phaser set too high they blew up, spraying the surrounding area. They were very resistant to stun effects also. Transporting them created problems. (Acid in the pattern buffer) Crew members get implanted with chest-bursters, the aliens run around the Jefferies tubes. Lots of fun.:D

I wouldn't use the races directly although one of the NPC's in a ST:TNG game (the Counsellor) was a Deltan who was the world's most blatantly frelling obvious Zhaan (from Farscape) ripoff.

What can I say, I have no pride and no-one at the group had seen Farscape.

I had to retire the NPC when one of the players came to the game with the entire first season of Farscape on DVD (the lucky blighter had bought them in a 2 for 1 sale, and the swine still won't lend me them).

Ah, but did they ever make the connection?

Being an otaku (anime fan), I found a number of aliens from various anime series which fit quite well into the Trek Universe. Among those races I considered most appropritate have been the following:

• The Jurai (from Tenchi Muyo!)-A race of humanoids that coexist with a race of sentient trees....their starships are grown from similar trees and utilize powerful "lighthawk wings" for attack and defense.
• The Raalgon (from Irresponsible Captain Tylor)-Warlike humanoids using "living" starships...have pointed ears similar to the Romulans but more humanoid.
• The Abh (from Crest of the Stars)-A species of blue haired, genectically engineered humanoids with a particulary distincetive culture and language....the author of the novels on which the series is based has given the Abh a well-developed background, society, culture and language. I found this race particulary works well in the Trek universe.

I've taken a few races from other sources - like Dan, I've a soft spot for the Vargr from Traveller, so they're available as PCs in my game. Gurrrps, also in my Relic campaign, is a Slarg from Tri-Tac Games' Fringeworthy with an unhealthy dose of Gordon "ALF" Shumway thrown in.

I've used the Ridley Scott/HansRudi Giger Alien in my game (replaced the wee beasties from the Traveller adventure Shadows with 'em. Nasty surprise for the players who thought I'd merely 'ported the adventure into my Trek game.

And I've got plans for a renegade offshoot of the Trill called the Goa'Uld. Bwah-hah-hah-hah!

How about using stuff from Dune? Sure they were all humans, but were more advanced physically (and sexualy) than anything human other sci-fi has.

How about a version of the dirty Tleilaxu and the Bene Gesserit sitting somewhere in the Gamma quadrant? With Ix and the Fish Speakers lying around. Also Arrakis/Rakis sitting somewhere there. Better yet, some sort of Anomaly (:/) brings your PCs right in the middle of the actual Dune universe.

I was thinking of a campaign concept, where Trek ships at a certain sector at a certain time from 2740's to 2770's were transported to the SW Universe and appear together at the same time. Instead of Voyager, where they try to get home, they know right away they should just stay and colonize. The first problem: They've transported to the Corporate Sector. The second problem: they don't have hyperdrives. The third problem: They have no money! (Or concept of money... maybe I should include a Ferengi vessel)

Speaking of DUNE, I once had an away team beseiged by those giant worms. The fun part was watching (and listening) to them make up thier own problems. I never said anything about the surrounding rocks preventing beam-out...they assumed it and never scanned the area. They also assumed the darn thing was phaser-proof. They also thought they were cut off from the ship...wrong again. Eventually the ship beamed them up and they assumed (once again) that the engineer had chaneled the transporter through the warp drive (or something to that effect) and gave the guy a commendation.

You want to really upset your players...velocoraptors...yes, you read right...velocoraptors. No other dinosaurs...just raptors. They're just as much fun to sick on your players as 'ALIENS'...although no face-huggers and chest bursters.

Velociraptors? They show up real well on tricorder scans and are susceptible to stun. If you find a way to suppress the PCs' technology, then yeah, they're pretty nasty. You'd also have to address why there are no other dinos about, given your scenario.

Adventure Seed
Possibly the 'raptors are being carried on a cargo ship to a zoological exhibit or an experimental facility (hey, not everyone's as enlightened as the Federation!), and the ship is caught in an energy damping field (maybe of natural origin, maybe deployed by pirates intent on stealing the rest of the cargo). The PCs happen along and attempt to render aid, but find themselves trapped - can't beam out, can't communicate with their ship - fun ensues. Make sure they have their dice handy and plenty of blank character sheets. An alternative to 'raptors might be the wee beastie from David Drake's novel Killer, or the critter from the novel and movie The Relic (hey, I like the title!).

As I ran the HansRudi Aliens, they didn't show up on tricorder scans unless you thought to scan for disturbances in the environment surrounding them, like "microchanges in air density." They were also impervious to stun - nothing less than setting 4 on a phaser would damage them, and anything less than 8 would blow holes in them, spreading that nasty molecular acid around. Of course, setting 8 on a phaser eats power like crazy. This made them a close approximation in their lethality to what we saw on screen in Alien and Aliens.

Here's a nifty one:

Why not introduce the Mechalus, from Alternity... they're a humanoid species who embrace cybernetics and nanotech much as the Borg do, save that they're near fanatical about their individuality and control over their negative emotions. They'd be a great species to introduce in the wake of all the Borg activity lately.

Physically, a mechalus (pronounced “mech-ahlus”) can be mistaken for a human if the viewer only catches a glimpse or if the area is shadowy. Averaging about 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighing around 198 lbs, the mechalus has the general shape and size of a human. On closer inspection, however, the similarities are quickly outdistanced by the differences. Veins of
circuitry weave with flesh and blood to form a totally synthesised body. The mechalus’s hair is a combination of protein strands and filaments of cable and wire. Even the skeleton has been
reinforced with super-strong synthetic material, and bony protective plates can be seen beneath the bio-organic flesh at the shoulders and across the chest.

Mechalus have he same range of emotions as humans, though they tend to try to downplay hostile or aggressive emotions. They were once responsible for the annihilation of another
species, and since then they have made a conscious and constant effort to suppress or regulate their negative emotions.
Perhaps the hardest aspect of mechalus for humans to get used to is their ability to merge with computer systems. While the mechalus can easily employ standard computer interfaces, they
have the unique ability to personally connect to computer systems. Filaments extend from fingers, snake into the computer in question, and form a solid link between body and machine.
This link gives the mechalus speed of thought access to the computer system, and more precise control than any manual interface can provide. With a natural affinity for technology and
computers, mechalus make excellent engineers. They aren’t limited to this profession, however, and can be found filling the ranks of a variety of roles.

The Mechalus have very ordered minds, which translates into a strictly structured society and an equally organised outlook on life. Although they think with the precision and logic of a machine,
they are highly emotional people who work exceedingly hard to promote their positive emotions and subdue their negative ones.
In a tense or dangerous situation, mechalus are likely to remain calm and logical; it’s not difficult for them to suppress all their emotions when they deem such action appropriate or
necessary. But in a climate of relaxation or celebration, their emotional pendulum can swing to the other extreme – to humans, it seems as though they are making a special effort to appear cheerful or jubilant. The mechalus don’t consider
their behaviour at such times to be exaggerated; strong displays of positive emotion, when the situation permits, are simply their way of demonstrating (to themselves as well as members of other species) that mechalus are more than just machines encased in biological bodies.

Velociraptors? Try the mehook, one of the races I ported from the Fusion comic book of the late '80s. Intelligent, feathered dinosaurs of the raptor stripe. I posted somewhere around here in one of the CODA races threads.

Since the Centauri have been for the most part ignored by ST our game uses the Centauri from B5. . .toned down a bit to make them loyal and valued members of the Federation. If ya search this message board ya might come across the write up we did for them when we first started using the B5 Centauri in our game.

And when we start up our game here again (after a YEAR off) we will introduce a new race. . .not sure which yet. . .from SW and will use the medical frigate from SW V & VI as their standard class of space craft. . .we are still working on this however and not sure what direction it will take.

I'm guessing, short, blue, wearing Mandalorian armor & has Gargamel's cat frozen in Carbonite...

In one Trek game on the far side of a wormhole, I used the Zhodani from Traveller. I filed off the serial numbers and put them in rubber masks, and gave them "Movie Era" technology with a few twists. (Warp accelerated lasers, vectored thrust impulse engines, and only rarely having access to transporters) The whole concept of Telepathic Thought Police got the crew's panties in a wad. They pretty much assumed that the Tlechoq (As I renamed them) were a "villian race".

I tend to rip-off Traveller a lot.

The traveller universe has a LOT of races that can plug into Trek very well.

In fact I use the Vilani (traveller) cultural model as the basis for the Orions in my Trek Universe (basically an ancient space-faring culture that has fractured and degenerated to the point where they are a minor power comprised of competing guilds and houses...basically the vilani culture post 'rise of man' in Traveller).

Also I think the Vargr, the Aslan, and the Droyne make great STREK races.

In the TOS game that I run I use the Darrians a fair amount as well.

Basic idea.
Take badass aliens from other games, drop them down to warp 1-3 (in TOS time) give them a half a dozen worlds and let the Federation run into them. Always fun.

besides Traveller, I'll probably steal some from Blue Planet, and Farscape actually has a few races I think I might include...

Huh? this is a thread about bringing races from other sources into a Trek game. Andorians are native to Trek. I don't understand your quest---Ow! Quit hitting!

Some one posted something about Anime Races . . . how about the Zentradi from the old Robotech/Macross Anime of the early 1980's . . . anyone up to fighting against 24 foot tall human like aliens . . . with ships to match?

As for the Jurai . . . it would be interesting to see their ships and how they would match with ST Tech. I mean we've dealt with living ships before, but rarely. I mean Gumto . . . that one Delta Quadrant species that the Borg really didn't like.

And whatabout these self-thinking Borg that Voyager helped liberate . . . there's something.

I've been considering using the Thranx, from Alan Dean Foster's Humanx Commonwealth books. I'll let you know how it turns out.

make them ancestral enemies of the GORN instead of the A'An (i think thats what the reptile race is the humanx commonwealth books is called...) and place them near the spiral edge of the federation, maybe a small confederation of the homeworld and 1 to 6 colony worlds?

Smell Nice! (+1 reaction roll to humanoid races) - that was actually a stressed characteristic of the 'first contact' humanx books. I mean yeah they're big giant preying mantis bugs, but they're pretty colors and the smell like lilacs...lol

By the end of this month, I want to pit my players as Borg vs. Daleks using CODA rules, so I used the 'Typical Borg Drone' from Book 5 'Aliens' as basis of comparison.

Last Saturday I finally narrated my homebrewed Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover ‘Dalek vs. Borg’ for a group of 6 newcomers to the game at a Star Trek fan gathering in the Netherlands.

I’d translated the attributes of the Daleks from Cubicle 7’s Doctor Who Roleplaying Game as well as I could to CODA, by assuming Borg as being generally equal to Cybermen. I also compared the weapon effects in both systems using humans, walls of various materials as targets and comparing the outcomes. I assume that a Dalek Particle Beam has the same effect as a ‘Light Disrupt A’; (=Kill a Humanoid, cut a 1m hole in a Duranium bulkhead in 10 minutes.) The effect of a Light Disrupt B (=Vaporize a Humanoid) seemed a bit too powerful and doesn’t compare to what we see in the series. I’ve also compared shields. In the newseries episode ‘Dalek’ the Doctor tells contemporary soldiers carrying assault rifles to aim for the eyestalks and dome in order to get past the shields and do damage. In CODA an assault rifle does a maximum of 26 damage, so I figured that a Dalek shield must be like a ‘Heavily Armored Security Door’ and negates the first 24 damage as a threshold so that an assault rifle at best would only do 2 damage with each hit, taking about 33 hits to take out a Dalek. In that same episode the whole platoon can’t penetrate the Daleks' shield. (apparently they didn’t roll high enough) ;)
A typical Borg would be dead after 3 maximum hits in this case, unless he managed to adapt after the first hit. In order to keep this demonstrative session short and exciting for the Borg PC's, I made the Dalek PC's a bit more vulnerable and ruled that passing the threshold two times would disable the Dalek shields. This played out rather well.

And this is how the story unfolded:

Stardate UNKNOWN. The Daleks were on their way to install a Time Conduit, until they detected a chroniton field in a Time Corridor. Expecting to find the TARDIS, they flew their enormous saucer straight to the source. In reality, the chroniton field originated from a Borg cube on a scouting mission through a Transwarp Corridor from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant. Both mileswide vessels collided, and crashed into normal space onto the surface of a desolate, rocky planet with normal gravity only a couple of yards apart. Humans couldn’t survive in this low-oxygen environment, but it’s no hindrance to either Borg or Daleks.
While the Borg collective consisting of over 600.000 drones regenerated, they sent out a taskforce of 3 drones to assimilate the enemy ship and its crew for parts. The Red Supreme Dalek also sent out a taskforce of 3 bronze Daleks on a scavenger hunt. Between both parties there were some ancient stone ruins which the Borg instantly used for cover. Both parties didn’t succeed in scanning each other effectively, so the Daleks suspected that they were dealing with some type of Cybermen. As soon as they saw each other, all three Daleks reacted the quickest and screaming: “You-are-an-enemy-of-the-Daleks!-EXTERMINATE!” they all shot and killed a Borg in their turn, but the Borg cube immediately respawned 3 new drones who succeeded in taking out 1 Dalek (called ‘Bender’ by the player), using customary integrated arm-disruptors. Strangely enough at that same moment a man in a grey jumpsuit came strolling forward and halted in the middle of the battlefield, applauding and said: “Splendid! The fight of the century; Dalek vs. Borg. I’m so glad to be able to experience this!” A Dalek shot a hole straight through the man, who dropped like a stone. The two remaining Daleks both killed another drone, since the Borg still hadn’t been able to adapt their energy shields to the Dalek particle beams. The Daleks quickly flew past them, intent on taking over the Borg ship. Then the man in the grey jumpsuit got up again without effort, and with a hand gesture the hole was gone. While he patted off the dust the man said: “It’s been fun, but I have to return to the Continuum. All good things come to an end!” Then he snapped his fingers and both the Daleks and the Borg were back in their own ships and on their original course as if nothing ever happened…

So in the end, the Daleks won this skirmish 4 – 1 by initiative. But then the battle would be far from over, and had the Daleks pushed on, they’d have to face over 600.000 drones all with the potential to adapt to their Particle Beams at any moment…
