In Search of the Sol System

How well do you know your solar system

We are starting up again after almost a year off. During this down time our ship was in the Sol system for minor refit, resupply and a short assignment as an cadet training vessel. The actual ships crew. . .well thats where you come in.

I decided I wanted to give each PC and NPC 5 development points [maybe just three, what do you think] to spend to account for their down time. Following this is a stat sheet of each of the inhabited worlds of the Sol system (5 in all).

What I see the players doing is taking these data sheets and creating what they did for this down time (such as helping an aunt run her dinner on the moon, or assist at the Academy, or an assignment on the terraforming mission on Venus, or System Traffic Control on Titan, or anything else they can come up with from the data sheets).

The assist I need from you all is did we miss anything in the data sheets. Did we leave out an orbital facility somewhere. Did we forget an inhabited world (I am not sure Titan was ever mentioned in Star Trek, but we believe it may have been mentioned in Babylon 5 [or was that Io] so it was added to honor the B5 series). Please if you can check them over and let us know what changes you recommend. Thanks-in advance.

Governed by a colonial administrator, who is also director of the project, Venus is a Terraforming Colony having only a small transient population of scientist and some Starfleet personnel. The runaway greenhouse effect has casused any surface water to evaporate into the atmosphere, resulting in the complete cloud cover and deep atmosphere (70 to 80 km). Atmoshperic winds reach 360 kph, and cover the planet completly. Great care must therefore be taken when piloting through it. Venus is primarily a rolling plain interrupted by two continental sized palteaus.

The only things I can think you are missing is the Academy live-fire range (starship), in an unused portion of the asteroid belt. The Pluto (orbit or what I don't know) communications relay station (both are from the SFA box set). Oh, lets not forget the Mars Perimeter Defense Network.

last I checked there are 9 planets in the Sol system (10 in Trek apparently) and 4 of them are gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus...not the two you mentioned.

By the way, I like the B5 ref. on Mars, but by this point don't you think she might be a little bit more on the inhabitable side? Class L or something.

Mars is in fact Class L, I think it is even given as example in the Rulebooks. Maybe you can also take a look at Star Charts there is also some interesting information ( btw, here Sol 'only' has nine planets). In the Academy Boxed set, however you find a load of information for Earth background, its definitely worth a look.

The Mars Perimeter Defense Network does this orbit Mars (which would seem silly) or is it an actuall series of units in their own orbit around the sun just called TMPDN due to their relative relationship to Mars?

Academy Live-Fire Starship Range any ideas on how to list this one. I dont want to just lable it as "asteroid belt" due to someone might think it occupied the whole belt. Are their any specific location for this?

Pluto Communications Relay Station has been added to the data sheet.

About the number of planets I have often heard that science believes there is a 10th, as yet undiscovered planet (something to do about an unaccounted for gravitational force acting an Pluto) and I assume that is where that idea came from. Does this 10th ST world have a name? [I think I might skip the 10th planet idea unless someone has a data sheet for it already.]

I should have listed the two gas giants as, "Super gas giants" thus only accounting for Jupiter and Saturn. Sorry my bad.

As far as the Planetary Class on Mars goes: I am not sure what to do. I like the idea of biodome cities, would these still be needed in a Class L environment? I have to admit trying to do a mix-and-match Star Trek/B5 referenced system is kind of at odds.

And does anyone have any suggestions on how many DP's I should allow? Five seems a bit high but on the other had 3 seemed a bit low.

I know they have colonies elsewhere, but isn't 6 billions total for the system on the low side. After all, the Netherlands spawned a population of around 20 to 40 millions in the world with a state of only 2 millions in the 18th century, and there has been 3 centuries between the WW3 era and the DW, and it seems to me that they would have had the time to do some serious terraforming on Mars.

I just looked MArs up in the Academy set. There it is Class M, as it is already terraformed. In the Star Charts however its Class K, as it is now, so maybe you want to do the middle-way and make it Class L ;)

The Perimeter around Mars is 'sphere-like' its just at the same orbit around the sun as Mars. I think you can find some information about it in the Dominion War Sourcebook here at trek-rpg.net.


You are right some scientists believe there is a tenth planet. However depending on the distance it could be ten times larger than Jupiter or even smaller then Pluto. Its maximum distance would be 0.5 lightyears its minimum I don't remember.

While it is described in the Academy set, I don't think it is thus important and it does not appear in the Star Charts.


I would adapt the DP rate to the already made advances of your characters. If they already played long, they can hardly do anything senseful with just 3 points, because skills and advatnages... are already developed. But if five is to high for you, but three to low, I would suggest to "tahtah" take four points :D

I've heard some theories about a companion brown dwarf as well, maybe it's the famous tenth planet. There are also four micro planets not far beyond Pluto, none really fits the description of planet, and some look more like asteroids than planets.

How about the Atlantis project?

They wanted to raise a landmass and call it atlantis or such.

Population was one of the harder items we had to come up with. The population listed for Earth is simply the estimated population from about 10 years ago (depending on the age of the reference book we used). As for the population of the other worlds. . .the Luna population was taken from a line of Rikers in ST:FC; as for the rest we made this up: (moon population/total surface area of moon)*total surface area of inhabited planet=population.

We had no other ideas so if you have one please let us know. Population figures (except for Luna) are something we are looking into changing.

The Planet Mars is something I am gonna have to ponder over. I like the idea of the large biodome cities (as seen in B5), but in the ST universe it has been a while since the planets' terraforming was begun. A Tenth Planet question from one of my players: was this planet ever referesed in any of the shows in any way, shape or form? If not I think we will go without it.

Development Points Given will be five. The characters are still fairly inexperienced, so receiving 5 DP's will be a big deal to the players (I want them to be excited about this and develop a good story for their characters time during this last year).

The "Micro Planets" I have not heard of ENS Arrgh. You said there are four of them "not far beyond Pluto." Are they considered satellites of Pluto? (I believe I heard something at one time about another asteroid belt that orbits the sun beyond our solar system. Am I just making up that memory or is there another, perhaps smaller asteroid belt surrounding our system? If so could these bodies be from that belt?

The Atlantis Project I forgot about. I remember the episode and that J-L turned down leading it, but I cant remember wasnt there an old rival of J-Ls' who was the next in line for the directorship? So its not like J-L's rejection killed the project. Hum, that would be a major project that I should mention in the final planetary description. . .any ideas what that should be? Would they have any results by now, even if minor ones?

The planetoids beyond Pluto are called the Kuiper belt. IIRC Pluto can be considered part of it. I think there could be Kuiper Belt objects larger than Pluto. There are known ones not too much smaller. The objects are very far apart and there are probably very many of them. I'm sure Charon is Pluto's only satellite.

The Planetoids: They are indeed part of the Kuyper belt, I initially thought they were other things, but I checked in my references.
The 10th Planet: I don't recall it being mentioned on the show, but I don't recall a mention of there being only 9 planets or of the sun being only a solitary, so if there is one, it could be either a dwarf or a planet.
Population: Estimates place Earth's projected population around 12 billions (slightly less) for the Enterprise period, 9.8 by 2025. Colonies and an event like a global war could create a baby boom effect like WW2 and the colonisation of the Americas did.

I figured after 300 yrs. Mars would be terraformed to the point that certain areas would have (barely) breathable atmospheres, in places like the Valley of the Mariners (say about the same pressure as Tibet). On Olympus Mons, the pressures high enough you can go out in a good cold suit and rebreather, but don't have an accident on the Nix Olympus ski slopes and crack that faceplate or your done.

Most of it, for us, is still under domes, but more and more settlements and farms are outdoors as gene-fixed plants work to crack the water out of the soil and put oxygen in the air.

So I guess our Mars looks a lot like the B5 Mars. But that's just us...

I heard of a proposed method which, I think, could yield results in less than 3 centuries. The base principle is to use satellites placed around the planet to provoke a massive increase in green house effect to bring up the temperature to enough heat to produce liquid water. The mean temperature on Earth being around 18 degrees celsius, IIRC, it would be an increase of 81 degrees overall, with greenhouse plants and facilities used to increase Oxygen production.

I thought in the real universe terraforming Mars would take a lot longer. And it seems now Mars has dangerous radiation.

The Kuiper Belt is proving to be interesting reading. It seems to be generally agreed that Pluto and its moon are the largest (yet discovered) objects of the Belt. So is Pluto still considered a planet? As soon as I finish my studies on this topic I will be adding the Belt to the data sheet.

The Oort Cloud is proving to be interesting reading as well. Most of the information I am finding is contradicted my some other source so I am not sure what to do (for example; one source lists its orbit as one light-year from the Sun, another as three light-years distant [where it would more likely be influenced by the gravity of Centarui than our sun]).

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and most of the other items you mention Karg are on the data sheets (I will have to find a way to mention Lake Armstrong in the Luna write-up), but I have a question. You list the Fleet Yards as being "on Mars." Is there a ground facility in addition to the orbital yards?

Welcome to Persephone (a.k.a Sol X). Well someone has given it a name (NASA has given it an I.D number) so its existance is strongly assumed. Most of the information I am finding consider it to be an outer gas giant (thus a frozen gas ball) of the same classificaiton as Pluto. [I did find one interesting web page on Persephone posted by a person who believes the planet does exist (because NASA has given it an I.D), but has not realeased its existance to the general public because it is on a collision course with us. . .which will take place sometime in the middle of this year. He advises us all to buy hot air balloons as not being on the surface may save us. . .but for the most part he tells us we are all dead. (So that we can not call him a quack-pot when this event does not happen he readily admits it may not happen until 2012 or 2013. . .something about his translations or math maybe being off a bit.)

That is the Mars we want! Do you have a data sheet that you use for Mars. I would love to see it if you do!

Cochrane what radiation are you refering too? I have not heard this before.

Terraforming as we understand it (this was from one of the Pocket Books I read a while back) consists of some technology to change the environment, but mostly is just planting a lot of plants to create oxygen. The player helping me with these data sheets recommended I change the "Lifeform Data: Vegitation None" to "Lifeform Data: Vegitation Sparse." Thus accounting for vasts forests and other plantlife grown over the last 300 years of terraforming. [Did LUG or even FASA ever do any background on what it takes to terraform or give any idea on the length of time it might take. . .hell anyone have a good web page on terraforming that might be useful?]

Planetary Temperature information would be a neat thing to add to the data sheets. . .I know its not why you mentioned mean temperatures ENS. Arrgh, but thanks for the idea.

Pluto is traditionaly considered a planet, quite possibly because the discovery of Pluto predates the first theories about the Kuiper Belt by 20 years, i.e. about the only possible classification for Pluto when it was first sighted was as a planet. And the International Astronomical Union (http://www.iau.org/) has stated that they have no intention to change the status of Pluto in any way.

I had always assumed that the administration of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards would be done from that orbital facility itself or in another orbital facility nearby. Was not the Starfleet Office Complex seen in ST:TMP the administrative hub of the San Francisco Fleet Yards? I had assumed that by ST:TNG the administrative activities would have been centered in the Fleet Yards itself (I always assumed that was the purpose of Spacedock seen in ST:TSFS, to combine construction and administrative activities into one facility).

Cool link Identity Crisis, thanks. Man I dont know what to think. I guess I am in favor of keeping Pluto as a planet, but man adding some of those asteroids to the mix; I am not sure about those.

What did the article say. . .our system could potentially consist of 14 planets? Thats a bit too much.

The Data Sheets have all been updated (I believe I got everything into them). Please note that I made a few changes to the style. . .such as putting all the atmospheric data under one heading and expanding ont he climate section.

The Oort Cloud is listed in a few places as being anywhere from 2 to 3 light-months out from our system. Does anyone know what that might measure out to in AU's? (Still unpacking from my move so I dont have all my goodies out yet.) Thanks!

The Oort Cloud is about 50,000 AU from the sun. Which by my maths is closer than eight light months than two or three.

The moons of Mars should have colonies since they would have been used as a waystation and homebase for Mars exploration. The people of Mars aren't Terran, they're Martian and won't let anyone forget it.

Europa and Titan should both have at least science stations on them.

The asteroid belt should be full of listening and command posts.

In my campaign we have a 10th planet which orbits out toward the Oort cloud, kicking the occasional comet out of the cloud and into the inner system.

It's called "Persephone" (the concubine of Pluto, IIRC) and it's about the same size as Mars, but it's little more than rock and frozen ammonia.

Part of one adventure used it as backdrop to a Cadet mission to "core" a comet nearby. While in the sensor shadow of Persephone the EBS ("Evil Bad Spy") (TM) launched the attack on the Cadets which started the whole campaign rolling.

Identity Crisis thanks. Do you have a descent link for the Oort Cloud (say maybe a NASA or respectable University page)? All the ones I can find all contradict each other. I have seen the distance for the Oort Cloud listed at from 2 light-months to 3 light-years!

Would the Moons of Mars still be occupied? Once the surface of Mars is settled it seems like the waystations and homebases would be abandoned in favor of more permanent settlement. Good point about them being proud Martians rather than Terrans. I will have to work that into the data sheet.

Titan will soon be updated with a science station. . .input as to the functions of this station would be apprecieated. I assume it would mostly be doing atmospheric studies since that is the most notable feature of Titan. (What do you recommend for Europa?)

The asteroid belt has me puzzled. Would it be occupied by such things when we already have the Mars Defense system and command facilities elsewhere?

As to Persephone, do you have a data sheet that you use Aldaron? I would be intersted in seeing it. BTW, what does it mean to "core a comet?" Sending it into an orbit toward the core worlds, or a surface mining operation to study the comits core?

The Oort cloud is a cloud and it's spread over a very large volume.

When Jan Oort first theorised that the cloud existed he did so because his calculations showed that most long-period comets had maximum distances from the sun of around 50,000 AU.

But the whole cloud may extended from 5,000 AU out to 100,000 AU.

It's a bit messy because there would be no clear dividing line between the Kuiper Belt (which starts at Neptune's orbit - 40 AU) and the inner regions of the Oort Cloud.

No Oort cloud object has been detected directly yet, it's presence is presumed from the mechanics of the comets that we can see.

A search on NASA or any other good astronomy site turns up several references, with 50,000 AU being the most often quoted figure.

I think they would be. Utopia Planetia and the Mars Defense system both likely need space stations, why not use the moons for some of the work and not build more stations than you absolutely have to? They could also be the offical entry points for Mars, a place to contain visitors until the bueacracy is finished with them and as a quaratine area before exposing the Martian population to diseases.

Titan would be atmospheric research and hydrodynamic research if Titan has a water system like some believe. Though it's made up of natural gas, not water. Europa would be for oceanic research of the world ocean beneath the ice, and any lifeforms that live there.

Yes. The asteroid belt is between the inner and outer system a perfect place for a defense net. Also it provides another trip wire before reaching Mars.

Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado still continues its mission of monitoring space traffic in Terran orbit. It is also one of the designated alternate command posts for Starfleet, in the event Starfleet Command in San Francisco is unable to carry out the duty. Other alternative command posts are the Andes in Peru, some sites in the interior of China, and other out of the way usually below ground locations.

There would also be mining facilities, colonies on some of the larger bodies, (which can be 1000km in diameter), and probably Federation bases. Pallas and Ceres are two of the big named asteroids that might support colonies and mining.

The Oort Cloud is in the data sheet, for now. I am leaning toward dropping it. As data on it is just speculation I see no need for it in the sheet. . .I doubt it would ever come up in a game.

The Titan Science Station will soon be mentioned in the data sheet, and one of our group has asked to take a shot at creating the data sheet for Europa (for those that would like to see it I will post it as soon as she is done [mid-week it sounds like]).

The Asteroid Belt will be updated to include mining colonies and operations (soon I hope).
