[CODA-Starship] Enterprise (NX-01) era ships

Ok!

I've tried to come up with stats for some of the ships we've seen so far on Enterprise, such as Klingon, Vulcan or Andorian ships. I haven't got around doing the Suliban but they're next on the list.

Now, I must admit I haven't seen most of the episodes those ships appeared in (I'm trying to catch up) I used the info found at the Ex Astris site. So there may very well be some mistakes here and there.

I've decided to keep the background info to a minimum due to my limited knoweldge (so far) but instead I'll insert a few design notes.

so here it goes!

Ok before I start here's my take on the Klingon fleet circa 2150:

The D-7 is as 'stated' in Starship. The D-7 is the newest, most advanced warship of its era. There are very few in existence: 3 have been commissioned while 2 other ones are being built. By Ent-era standards it is a monster- like the JH battleship is by TNG's standards. They act as the Klingon fleet's standard command ships.

The standard Klingon heavy ship is the D-5 cruiser. It is overall more advanced than the Human's NX-01 class and comparable to the Vulcan's Combat Cruiser. There is also the 'transport' versoin of the D-5 with lesser combat capabilities but optimized for carrying troops and war supplies.

Then the newest Klingon standard light ship is the D-3 (Raptor). It is used a light attack craft, a scout or an escort. I've modified the version found in Starship; I assume that the Starship version is the lastest upgraded version found in the 2200's.

The D-2 is the earliest version of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey and it is a somewhat older ship which has been supplented by the Raptor.

I'm puzzled as to why a race narrowly focused on battle like the Klingons have apparently the same tech level as the Vulcans... my theory is that the 'TOS Klingons' that we don't see (and most likely will never see again) are the 'brains' within the empire and they're the ones coming up with those advanced designs.

OPTIONAL RULE: I had a bit of a problem when doing the Klingon ships- on one hand they are supposed to be more powerful than Human ships but on the other hand the range of values in the CODA system is limited. So I came up with this little optional rule:

whenever Klingon ships fire on Human ships, and a succesful hit occurs, there is the chance that the Klingon weapon does +1 extra penetration. To determine if this happens, the Klingon Tactical officer rolls for to-hit again with all of the applicable modifiers in effect; if the roll is succesful then the shot does +1 penetration damage to the Earth ship. This may not be used against Vulcan or Andorian ships, as their shield technology has been adapted to Klingon weapons' fire.

Very nice. With regards to the Klingons, I suspect that the Klingons just had a head start on the Federation, and they just have larger numbers of ship producing facilities. It is possible that the smooth heads were one of the planets conquored by the Klingons, who had advanced technology and a reasonable fighting ability, so they were draughted in to their forces. Klingon ships have always been quite large and very heavy, or small and nimble, but all of these strategies have been war specialisations. Their weapons are not very sophisticated, but they do shunt out alot of power, however general technology wise they seem to lag behind the Federation somewhat once the Federation get going. The Klingons seem to design by bulk, the federation by refinement and flexibility.. which is fine - yes the old consitution probably outmatched a klingon ship - but then the Klingons might send 3 ships (much like the Cardassian technique!)!

Design defect (cloaking device)

*Romulan 'magnetic bottle' warp drive rules:

The drive is the latest in Romulan warp technology and is a refinement over the standard 'magnetic bottle' principle. The ship is fitted with warp drives but they can only be used twice before being recharged at a base. Each time it is used the ship can travel at a maximum of warp 4 (OCU). When the 2 charges have been depleted then the ship can no longer go to warp. The system is vulnerable to enemy fire- whenever 'propulsion' is hit and IF THERE is still a charge left, a D6 must be rolled- the result equals the # of damage points the structure suffers.

Note:

The Bird-of-Prey is fitted with a cloaking device that makes the ship invisible to the naked eye and makes it difficult to detect by sensors. It is however a very crude device, even compared to TOS standards. Even a Starfleet shuttlecraft from the TOS era could easily detect it with its sensors.

Excelent job. I particularly liked the way you have the Vulcan ships with only phasers but much better protection - so in a fight with the Andorians they would be fairly evenly matched.

Without (hopefully) starting another flame war on the Romulan Warp Drive, perhaps the magnetic bottle could be recharged if you could find a rich enough source of deuterium (all in one go) such as the upper atmosphere of a gas giant? maybe someone could develop something like a portable magneitc bottle charger - a small station they can fit in a shuttebay, and leave to charge up their magnetic bottle, for example in a gas giant atmosphere. Perhaps only larger command carriers can carry them, or several ships bring smaller one's and chain them together to rapidly build a small facility (like they build space stations today :D )? Just a thought.. and it could give some interesting missions in a Romulan battle - can the NX crew find their hiddem warp power source, disable it and cripple the local Romulan fleet ? ;D

Has anyone got any ideas for something like that? Perhaps you could give a size 2-3 vessel a warp core allotment big enough for a larger ship. I think the upcoming Expanded Starships book has a nice modularity edge which would fit here, and you barelly need anything else, other than a very low level operations ability, decent manouvering thrusters and armour plating (it is in a gas giant atmosphere!) and nothing more than the free sensors you get with a 0 :D

Or perhaps you could simply say it has a very weak power plant and pit the magnetic bottle in a large storage compartment (perhaps spending almost all of it's space on cargo unit's) - since it's just taking up space - it doesn't give anything to the ship?

Ex-Astris lists the lengths of the vulcan and Andorian ships at about 500m. In the episodes the ships are at least 1.5 to 2 times as long as enterprise. When they are seen travelling side by side.

Ha that one I did on purpose: I wasn't too keen on having Ent-era ships from future members of the Federation which are larger than the Constitution class and almost as large as the Ambassador or the Vor'Cha ( :confused: )- so that's why I made them significantly larger than the NX-01 but not by that much.

true...but you must remember that many ships types in Earth history usually start out bigger, and technological refinements make them either a) smaller and same performance, or much nastier because you can fit more in them.

And I won't go into the whole Explorer/Cruiser argument. but it is an idea. :)

Well if you take the evolution of Starfleet's flagships, starting with the Constitution you'll see that the tendency is bigger ships, not smaller. You have the Constitution, the Excelsior, the Ambassador and the Galaxy. Only the Sovereign breakes the trend- but it owes as much to the warship as the explorer. Same thing goes for the Klingons: the K'tinga, the Vor'Cha then the Negh'Var- they're always getting bigger.

moot point anyways, come to think of it- the Vulcan designs are about 1.5-2 times the length of the NX-01; the Andorian ship is less than 1.5 but whenever we'll get ship schematics in a ST mag I'll adjust the designs. Shouldn't affect that much the CODA size rating anyways.

I think that the size clasifications are sufficiently abstract to get away with gaining or loosing a few meters here and there - their actual sizes aren't relevant in any sense, unless you have to fly them through spacedock doors.. when it might be a problem for ships the size of the galaxy class :D

With regards to vesel sizes, you are right to a point about them getting bigger.. because almost every ship fielded by the federation after the galaxy class (with the exception of the Titan mentioned in Nemisis, which hasn't been seen, so it could be a misnomer :D ) have been smaller. Ships from the future such as the Relativity and Braxtons's time ship as well as the various time pods have been very small - yet very potent!

Background:
The Intrepid-class was the state of the art when it was commissioned to supplement the Cochrane-class light cruisers. It was the most capable ship in the fleet until the construction of the NX-class Enterprise, in fact, most of the systems initially installed on the NX-01 were tested on the Intrepid. It was the flagship of the fledgling Earth Starfleet. The other ships of this class helped to secure and maintain communication with the first Earth colonies and explored the closest star systems. It was also able to run escort for freighters, but only if it was closeby. But it's main drawback was it's warpdrive. It simply was not fast enough to respond to attacks on freighters or colonies at warp 1.8. Some ships have been refitted with the new WE-4 warpdrive. With a top speed of warp 3 and an emergency speed of warp 4, this new drive will soon replace the older WE-2c's and thanks to advancements in warp engine design, will occupy little more than the same internal volume. With the Xindi attack on Earth, the modernization program is going into overdrive. The refit will include the new warpdrive, phase cannon, and photonic torpedoes. Other technologies will include strengthened hull plating and new transporter systems for personnel and cargo.

Background:
The NX-class was meant to usher in a new era of exploration for the Earth Starfleet. The NX-class cruisers are the state of the art in Terran starship design. She incorporates the WE-5 warp engine, capable of speeds up to 125 times the speed of light. But the NX-01 Enterprise has found that the galaxy is not a friendly place. Shortly after leaving spacedock, the Enterprise Armory and Engineering departments had to implement the phase cannon upgrade in the field (which increased firepower at point blank and close range). So far, first contact has been made with several species, not all of them friendly. Enterprise has run into Klingon marauders, Nausicaan pirates, unknown alien raiders, Suliban pod ships, and Tholian cruisers. There was even a recent encounter with a Tellarite bounty hunter in which said bounty hunter captured Captain Archer of the Enterprise and attempted to turn him over to the Klingons. The NX-02 is set to be completed in several weeks. Since the Xindi attack, Starfleet is re-assessing it’s defense plans for Earth. The older Columbia-class cruisers are to come in for refits to the new weapons and propulsion systems. Most can install phase cannon in the field, but photonic torpedoes and WE-5 engines will require at least two weeks in spacedock. At the moment Starfleet consists of only 20 odd ships, half of which are acting as supply ships trying to support the colonization effort. The others are patrolling the stellar trade routes and Sol System as best they can. Plans are also being drawn up for a smaller “no-frills” starship. This Daedalus-class of cruisers will lack some of the advancements seen in the NX-class, but will include other advancements such as a new system of pumping more energy into a laser cannon, this development proves to be more powerful and less expensive to produce than the current phase cannon. They should only be 2/3 the cost of an NX-class cruiser and have the same offensive capabilities, but their science and comm systems will suffer. This class is to begin construction and enter service by 2160.

Notes:
This is meant to reflect the NX-class after the Xindi attack on Earth. The ship has been refit with new photonic torpedoes, which have been in development with the phase cannon. They have increased penetration over the older spatial torpedoes and longer range (spatial torpedoes could only fire out to medium range with a penetration of 2/2/2/0/0: Reed made a remark about how much more range the new torpedoes have than the old spatial types in "The Expanse"). I gave the transporter the design defect to reflect that it is a very new technology. It has trouble in anything other than “ideal” conditions. During a storm, a crewman was beamed up and had debris from his surroundings merged with his body. Until an improved matter discriminator is designed and field-tested, there is a 50% chance that this will happen under similar circumstances.

Uhm anton, should there be 2 Intrepid classes? perhaps you should rename it, or else it's a relic from the future, a present from the TCW people :D

Do you have any iullustrations to support it? I know what the other two look like but I;m not familiar with that one (with the exception of Voyager :D)

Of course with only seeing the ship twice in the series, I'm trying to come up with what would be state-of-the-art just prior to the NX-Class.
Decided to call it Intrepid-class instead of Unnamed-class.

I know that the Daedalus-class was created many years ago, but - given the events of Enterprise - don't you think that maybe this ship, built a decade after the NX-01, might have phase cannons and photonic torpedoes rather than nuclear missiles and lasers? I understand that this ship is based on canonical information, but come on... would Starfleet engineers really design such a retro vessel?

I do like the concept of the Daedalus-class, but I think that it is hideous and would almost certainly be more advanced than Enterprise rather than less.

So anyway, my Daedalus-class has the aforementioned weapons upgrades as well as a slightly different hull design/configuration. I'd use the same model, but make it more like what we've seen in Enterprise: shiny, sleek, futuristic.

Don't get me wrong... I really like what you guys have come up with. It's just that - as I've said in other threads - I'm an aesthetic snob; I hate how TOS (and earlier) ship designs looked when they came out in the 60s. I say update them! Update them to... 22nd century standards! ;)

I figure that without the shipyards and replicator technology to build ships quickly and cheaply, Earth will need a cheap, but effective, ship to fight the Earth-Romulan war. The few NX-class ships and the "Intrepid-type" ships would lead task forces, while the Daedalus forms the backbone of the fleet. As soon as they can afford to, they'll upgrade the Daedalus with phase cannon, phasers, and photons. :D
And I've seen some pretty renders of the Daedalus on the net.
To use a military anology, the NX-class is an M-16A2, the Daedalus is an AK-47, may not be pretty, but it's cheaper and gets the job done.

I haven't had time to read all that you posted thoroughly (and frankly I'm having a hard time remembering what stat means what and all) but it looks good.

I have to assume that or I'd be wasting my time, but that's really beside the point, I like designing starships... :D
So until it becomes officially "not canon", we can do as we please. So I don't really care what B&B do, if I want to make something canon in my little corner of the Star Trek universe, it's canon.
And Tobian, if you want the hi-tech Daedalus, just look it up in the Starfleet Operations Manual. And I don't think two Intrepid-classes two hundred years or so apart will confuse too many people... :D

As for Xindi design philosophy seems to be...
Aquatic, big guns and slow engines
Insectoid, small and annoying with big guns, but light shields
Reptillian, fast and lots of guns
Arboreal and Primate, seem to be about the same, balanced ships.
