Star Trek Character Builder v.1 (Character Generator for Coda Trek)

The link mentioned below is my download site for my character generator as well as my previous starship counter. I recommend that you read the help file to familiarize yourself with the program. I tried my best to automate most of the process of charater building but there is an editor to make if there's any deficiencies. You can use the program to build PCs or NPCs. You still need your sourcebooks and Player's Guide for reference. Feel free to distribute the program freely or any of the other items. If you have any questions, comments or others feel free to post it up here. Remember to uninstall the program before installing it again.

Requirements: Windows XP/2000/Me/98 (though i'm not sure of 95). Internet Explorer

Sorry for the inconvienance, I spit the program into two parts (the main setup program and the help file). So download both files.

Download Part 1 and part 2. Part 1 "Setup.zip" contains the main setup file. Unzip and run the setup file .Then unzip part 2 "Trekhlp.zip" and place the file in the same directory as the program. I hope everything works out.

I run my game using the point based rules not the random dice rolls. How do I use the point based system rules in your program?
If you do not have it you should not everyone likes Die Rolling for Stats.

Is there a way to save/print the finished character?

Thank you for letting me know, i'll consider it for the next version. The players i play with perfer the random method and the possibility having high scores.

...but how do I get more than one language for a character? I realize that with the Universal Translator doing all the work, it's not really required, but it might be good for some characters.

Otherwise, the program is cool. It could be a little more intuitive, maybe... but I like it.

Bug report:

When selecting the +1 x 5 to Professional Skills when completing early character generation, I noticed that if I added a Skill with a point of rank, my available ranks decreased (as they should). When I clicked "remove", however, it removed the highlighted skill, but didn't put the rank back into the "pool" - in other words, it penalises you a skill rank.

A suggestion:

Perhaps allow the user to enter and save professional abilities. This would allow each user to pick and choose what Prof Skills he/she might want to keep "on board"

That said, however - sensational bit of software. Unlike others, I foud it to be eiminently intuitive, as well...

I wrote the program with a combination of Delphi (object pascal) and VC++. Delphi was mainly used as the client program and I used VC++/MFC/ATL to write the server.

I 'll look into the bug.. if you're referring to the Professional page it should put back the points when deleted. But i'll look into it. There's a chance I may overlooked something. I might be putting a patched up version sometime later this week to accomadate a couple things (like the pick method).

I am new in the forum so i would ask you about races that you included in you great soft. Where have you found statistics for that races, because it will be great to have theese written down when I would be at camping or somewhere in wilderness camp, example :).

When you choose Profession and Elite Profession it should go:
Profession: Starship Officer
Elite Profession: Starship Elite Profession name or none at all.

If you look at Page 65 in the Star Trek Player's Guide under Enlisted Personal which is the blue section. If you build Enlisted Personal they are just Starship Officer.

Also Science Officer, Command Officer, Engineering Officer and etc are all Elite Professions. Example: You can start out as a Starship Science Officer and eventually multi Elite Profession go into Command Officer for instance like Mr. Spock or Janeway to site examples.

They're actually from Starfleet Operations Manual and Aliens sourcebook. None are made up or unoffical

Yes, i'm aware of it. The program was designed as quickie generator to make a starting out character of elite or non-elite type.

Technically, Enlisted personnel do not have any profession. They get the profession picks as described in the sidebar on page 65 of the PG, but no professional abilities unless they either take the Innovative edge or qualify for the prerequisites for an elite profession.

For my own personal game, I've played with the idea of an Enlisted Personnel demi-profession, but only the very basics of it... :)

Ok written poorly but still one can not make Enlisted in the software. So how can I make my chief?

Yes, you should be able to add specialites in the professional details page. After adding a skill to your skill list, either double click the skill or click the "add" button and another window will show up asking you to specify. If this doesn't help email me and i'll see what i can to help out.

I Tried that but it keeps giving me a (you must add a point to add a specialty) message with no way to add the point

I see. Basically, from what i understand of the rules, is that you must allocate one skill to get a speciality. So, a player has to allocate a minium of two points to a skill (one to gain a speciality and one point for the skill). But if I misunderstood the rules, let me know and i'll change it for the next version which i'll release sometime during the weekend.

You understand correctly (you cannot have a specialty without having at least one level in a skill). And, from what I've seen, the program does allocate the picks correctly (changing the "2" if you put two picks to a "1" for levels with one specialty). :)

Although, it might be more intuitive to have the program subtract a pick from your total of 5 when you choose to add a specialty. It would basically take out one step (or even click of the mouse) by doing so...

Another problem would be if you were using one of your five picks to add a specialty to a skill you already have...

No i understand that. What is happening is after i choose a skill I cant add a specialty to it while in that section, Can do it on the next page though

Why doesnt your program use an access database? that way people could add things to your program like races and such. after all i was looking through the program (which looks nice BTW) and didnt see the Jem'Hadar which i would like to make a character of.

this way i have to beg you and ask you to add it, where if it were an access database i could add it myself.

so can you add Jem'Hadar?

The next version which is already completed which will include a total of 60 races(including the Jem'Hadar), except for the Dividians (including some fixes, especially the Professional Detail page). I am going to upload to my new website either tommorrow (Sunday) or Monday. One of the reasons i didn't use Access, not everyone has MS Access but maybe future incaranations will probably include a race editor of somesort.
