My version of Mars and Utopia Planitia ship yards
My version of Mars and Utopia Planitia ship yards
The other day a guy I work with, Chuck and I were talking about Star Trek Picard and what Utopia Planitia looked like on the show. I remember when they have shown the construction yards and planetary facilities in other episodes just and image of the surface facilities in The Next Generation and then the Yards in Voyager. Later that day I set to work gathering the data and making what was needed for making this facility into something that is usable in Spacedock.
Some of this is based on what I have seen and what I guessed at. This is Utopia Planitia as I see it and makes it work for starship repairs and construction.
It is a longer than most posts taking multiple postings.
Utopia Planitia
This is based upon the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager era and not the Picard Series although notes are made in references to the single scene that we witnessed in the first two episodes that I have seen in this series. I have not found that Discovery and Picard series the Star Trek that I grew up with and like I know a lot of people like them I just don’t find that I do. I look at the alternate version of Star Trek by Abrams, Discovery and Picard as alternate universe versions of Star Trek. This is not to say that our universe we play in is any closer to cannon than they are as we have had cross overs into other series such as Babylon 5 and others.
I would think that Orville would have similar facilities somewhere in their universe whether it be Mars or some other planet.

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards
Although the Federation and Starfleet have many ship yards and constructions facilities across the Federation like many other spacefaring species. Utopia Planitia is the largest of the Federations orbital construction and maintenance facilities inside of the Federation Territory and is among the leading starship development of new classes of starships and technologies along with Deep Space 5 and Starbase 47, and planetary bases such as Iadara colony like Utopia Planitia. Most starships classes like the Defiant, Galaxy and Sovereign classes have been developed at Utopia Planitia.
Starfleet has repair facilities at a majority of all starbase facilities where all starships civilians and military starships can get repairs. Where most of these facilities are dedicated mostly to repair and retrofitting, while Utopia Planitia, Deep Space 5, Starbase 47 and Iadara Colony are main stream construction of the new starships.
While Utopia Planitia is planetary facilities where parts of the ship are constructed and transported to the orbit to be installed into the starship. Each part and part of the ships is constructed and machined to make the part fit the starship. Even though the starships are similar to each other when it comes to ships there are slight differences here and there that make each ship an individual. Changes as the ship goes through its life the changes make the ship differ than the original designs of starship.
While the ship yard in orbit consists of three habitable stations where people live when not constructing starships. There are at least a hundred of drydock frames and facilities where starships can be constructed, repaired and retrofitted at any time. Starships are built from scratch to completion in a years constructed. In orbit there are several types of drydocks. One is a ‘spider’ like that wraps eight leg like appendages around the ship holding it in position, the rest are open end cages wrapping three sides with mounted lighting panels providing extra light on the ships exterior hull.
Three orbital habitats and several orbital construction offices as well as whatever is needed for space stations. There will be outer markers to warn of there is stationary facilities and such.
My estimated Starship Orbital Drydock Frames in orbit of Utopia Planitia (over one hundred (these figures 104 there could be even more))
- Several ‘Spider style’ orbital support frames capable of handling size 8 and 7 starships
- At least a Baker’s dozen size 8 orbital drydock frames capable of handling sizes 8 and 7 starships
- Three Dozens of size 6 orbital drydock frames handling size 6 to 5 starships
- Four dozen size 4 orbital drydock frames handling size 4 to 3 starships
- Plus any other specialty frames made for specialty ships, this does not include drydocks in the three Utopia Planitia space stations that are a part of the yards construction faciities
All my estimated Orbital Drydock frames are one of several different shapes size and make to various sizes of starships and designs. Each can be manipulated to handle ships of different sizes starships and specialized frames can be made to construct special ships as they are made to handle such ships when needed for construction.

Description and Notes:
Mars’s primary orbital shield has a resistance threshold of 3333 and protection of 10,000. This shield can deflect the incoming fire of at least a dozen Romulan Warbirds firing in a single volley. In addition to the shield there are several nearby phaser emplacements each with type IX phasers mounted in them firing into orbit when they are needed. Orbital defense satellites and platforms as well as Starfleet Mars-class Automated Planetary Defense Fighters can be deployed when there is a call for them.
Though this is the planetary part of the Utopia Planitia ship yards while much of the actual construction is preformed in orbit above the planet in Orbital Drydocks. I figured that there are over one hundred drydocks in orbit over Mars where the ships are repaired, refitted and constructed at any given time.
A Nebula-class starship would take 182 days at forty hours a week while being construct with inspection delays and systems test delays would be twice as long, a little over a year. Smaller the ship would take less time. While double shifting would cut the time in half and triple shifting would make the ships construction during the Dominion War make sense in the need for replacement ships, though the time to build a full ship would take too long. Yet, building the ship with the bare bones leaving the science systems to little to nothing would make the ship just a little quicker. There would be manufacturing delays and/or because of supply delays on raw materials to construct a starship also would cause delays. I would think that Starfleet would have a protocol in place to test each and every part placed into a starship.
My notes:
I took the SU’s times three that gives you the amount of hours that would to make the ship. Breaking the time to construct the ships down into days that would give you. It would make the time by multiply by twenty-five present to make the ships.
(As seen in Star Trek Picard there are three of these facilities on the surface each with attached production and dedicated facilities.)
The planetary defenses would include items from http://forum.trek-rpg.net/showthread...-space-attacks
