Generally I find it is the setting, not the system, that gets between players and a game (with a few notable exceptions).
I myself do not like the GURPS system, but I had an enjoyable game of it...

I think part of the problem is the fact that there is a relatively small group of people even visiting these boards. Most of us "know" each other (not physically, possibly, but certainly by handle)...
I, also, am in the "Books and Movies are Different" category -- if I wasn't there was no way I could have liked Master & Commander, given how little it was like any of the books ;)
