    Post New Advantages

Hey, take a look at this article...
    http://www.redherring.com/mag/issue8...mutant-86.html

This mutation would be for females only (for those that skipped the read)

    Tetrachromatic (+?)

As for the level of the advantage, how useful would this advantage be? This color lies between red and green. Probably some advantages for the stellar cartographer, certainly.

That's an interesting article, and an interesting concept for an advantage.

The question is, what is being a tetrachromatic good for? Improved fashion sense, in and of itself, probably doesn't matter much in a Trek game (though, oh, what a great advantage in, say, a Richelieu-ian setting ). What would it affect? I'm not even sure it would have any effect on things like stellar cartography.

If it affects one skill or ability in a minor way, it's probably a +1 advantage. More than that, probably a +2, though I have a hard time imagining it could be *that* useful.

Think of evolution... if we don't limit ourselves on being able to see the "visible" (sorry, couldn't avoid that ) light spectre, and extend our abilities to catch infrared or ultraviolet, there you'd have a nice advantage: Extended Vision (+1). That could include any modification of the eye cells for catching extra colors and the like.

Who knows what inbreeding of species can open up. Well, you saw what Geordi saw through his visor, when he saw the beacon's plasma trail or whatever... That kind of useful. Tetrachromatic itself may be common for a whole race and thus half the button look like the same color when they're really color coded separate, etc.

It might give a bonus for spotting camouflage, too. Sometimes color blind people can spot camouflage just because they see things a little differently than most people.

Actually, I'd think it would make camo more effective. Camouflage works by overloading you with distracting info...

The article doesn't indicate that it extends the colour range, though. If it did that, it would have to be an infrared or ultraviolet cone, and it isn't. The effect seems more to be a case of increased resolution. I'd give it a +1 advantage, no more.

Yep extending this to invisible lightwave and the like could be interesting, like sombody able to spot forcefield, plasmafield, etc... ghosts and company all have a treknobabble explanations, some people might be able to see them. And what about somebody able to see with his own eyes cloaked ships, that could a goo start point for a Romulan-threat scenario (But what this guy has that the romulan what! he's just a lowly enlisted!). Anything is possible, nice thread.
