    MISSION
Much like it’s illustrious predecessor the bI'rel, the valQIS Class Far Scout is a small, fast scout ship capable of defensive and offensive missions as well as reconnaissance behind enemy lines, infiltrating, striking quickly and escaping through the use cloaking technology.

    FEATURES
The bI'rel class was a successful and proven design for the Klingon Empire, but was beginning to show it’s age against newer enemy ship designs. Not willing to give up such a useful vessel, the High Council tasked House H’joQ with a complete redesign of the bI'rel Class into a newer and more robust attack craft.

Annoyed at the demand (the B’rel frame has been modified nearly as far as reasonably possible), the H’joQ Thought Admiral of Design, Admiral Khu’kov and the chevwI' tlhoy' (Wall of the Empire) design group went to analyzing the elements which made the bI'rel successful and worked to improve on it. Finding that the general durability of the frame could not be realistically improved without seriously upscaling the size of the vessel (defeating the task put before them), the group focused on weapons, speed, and maneuverability.

The first task was to improve the ships warp drive, while serviceable, was growing somewhat dated and the scouts often lagged behind newer and more powerful vessels. The older KE-24 embedded Graf Unit, was replaced with the newer and more efficient KE-28 system, noted for it’s lighter weight and better power generation. The addition of the more powerful system required reinforce bracing along the spine of the class to handle the additional strain, altering the appearance of the vessel somewhat.

After adding the newer Graf Units, a redesign of the impulse core was needed. Following some brief experimentation, it was decided to completely redesign the impulse and plasma thruster system on the class. While newer KI-22 I.M.Pulse drives were added to the frame, a newer and somewhat more complex series of thruster jets were added along the hull and wings of the vessel, giving impressive maneuvering for a ship of it’s size. Some captains have made annoyed remarks that the system requires more work to maintain, but then it’s utility in disciplinary actions tend to blunt this one small complaint.

Extensive analysis and AAR review of the bI'rel’s usage over the decades and examination of modern ship tactics dictated that the most obvious upgrade needed in the ship’s munitions package was the ship’s disruptors, which were often used in “dog-fights”. There was some speculation to how to exactly make the upgrade more worthwhile, as larger disruptors were harder to cloak even in offline status.

The solution came with the capture of several dominion vessels during the war, one of which had a full technical database on Federation vessels, including the Defiant, something which the Federation had been reluctant to share. Of interest was the high grade recharge capacitors of the ships phased pulse-phaser cannon, a marked improvement over the typical pulse disruptor used on birds of prey. Armed with a more powerful disruptor fitted with this new technology, and using typical Klingon ‘wolf-pack tactics’, the H’joQ have projected the ship would see considerable improvement in survival ratios.

Admiral Khu’kov himself examined the schematics, noting the differences and improvements, then began a two week seclusion with the rest of the design team to apply the improvements to the new starship. The end result, after some testing, was a new breed of rapid-fire pulse disruptor, that would alter the frequency of it’s salvo with each pulse. The ships torpedo package was updated and retrofitted with improved electronics to allow for the usage of some more modern torpedo systems, such as the H’joQ ‘pulse-wave’ torpedo and Tri-cobalt devices.

Of perhaps the greatest interest is the complete replacement of the old KS-42 sensor suite with a newer system based partially on Dominion technology captured and reverse engineered during the war, giving a superior scanning, analysis, and cataloging capability for a ship of it’s class.

    BACKGROUND

The E2 and other ships of the “Echo” series grew out of the recognition by the H'joQ and members of the High Council and KDF high command that the Klingon Fleet, which solid and serviceable, was becoming outdated compared to newer galactic powers that were rising in the Alpha Quadrant, such as the Cardassian Union.

The H'joQ, always forward thinking, has been designing, at least on paper, several new classes to replace the venerable bI'rel, kI’vort and kI’TinGa classes. The E-2 has been drafted to replace the bI'rel as a far range scout that would be readily recognizable to warriors in terms of layout and repair, yet modernized and updated to the current era in terms of weapons, shields, propulsion, and cloaking technology.

The valQIS made it’s debut at the Battle of Cardassia Prime (much to the surprise of the Dominion and everyone else), as raiding flights of valQIS’s decloaked and hammered Dominion/Cardassian defenses into rubble and, more importantly, Dominion Command and Control vessels, into dust, allowing Alliance vessels a brief respite while Dominion forces regrouped.

Of particular note was the success of the H’joQ’s now famous qIrq Attack Wing (lead by Admiral Khu’kov’s son, K’Mog), consisting of ten valQIS vessels, which decloaked inside of the Dominion perimeter and destroyed a Dominion ‘super–battleship’ before it could raise it’s shields in a precision strike against it’s warp core.

Martok’s irritation at not being told of the new design gave way quickly to desire to have them spread amongst the Empires forces as fast as possible. The other Houses feel over each other placing orders for the new vessels and the valQIS is well on it’s way to supplanting the bI'rel as a ship of choice for scout commanders.

Interesting design and very cool "fluff" text. My only concern is shield threshold. I've had this conversation with Snake and Davy but I still think giving klingon ships that low a threshold makes them unplayable. Except for shuttles there are no starfleet ships with these kinds of thresholds. And unless you are doing wargame scenarios with fleets of klingon ships going "poof" to take an objective, I can't see how klingons would make ships which are so easily destroyed. Nothing in the shows or movies (in my mind anyways) shows klingon ships being lightly shielded.

This would also make a klingon campaign run on these ships with threshold of 1 or 2 almost inplayable because with only 15 or 20 structure getting hit with penetration 4 weapons gives you like 5 rounds befor you go boom.

Just my take on things. Ignore if irrelevant.

it depends really on how useful you make their cloak during combat.. where a cloak is useful is you can decloak take a pop and hopefully decloak before you take too much damage! But yes, even a mediocre tactical officer could hit a 13!

    Question

Actually, I agree on those points. But considering this isa scout ship and those have always died like flies on trek, I wasn't too concerned. I pushed the frame as far as it could go. you could increase the threshold if you wanted to, but that would break the rules slightly...but then a point or two over isa minor quibble.

Any one want me to do this?
