    Question Origin of Borg?

    Hello, folks!

I'm hoping someone here can help me. Sometime in the past week or so, I stumbled across a timeline. I think it was for a PbeM game online, but I can't find it now. It may have been for LUGTrek, or in one of the LUG Netbooks, but I've searched, and I just can't find it now (even Google's coming up blank).

The reference on the timeline that sticks out in my mind is one of the earliest entries, which was to the effect of this:

"A medical experiment gone horribly wrong results in the creation of the Borg."

I know that's not much to go on. I don't remember the name of the alien world this was supposed to have happened on, or the exact date the timeline gave. It was one of the first entries, and in "ancient times."

Yeesh, I sound moronic, but this has been bugging me like crazy for the past couple days trying to find this reference.

Has anyone come across this? Does it sound familiar at all?

    Thanks for your time!

    TJ

There has been, to the best of my knowledge, no "official" chronology of Borg development given, beyond what we've seen in the various series/movies. However, mactavish (one of our more illustrious members here at Trek-RPG.net ) came up with an extrapolated history/chronology that, my group, at least, has accepted as the official story.

There were two versions of this work. The first was a PDF document for the Icon system, which covered up to Insurrection's developments; the second was a pure text document for Coda, and which addressed situations seen at the end of VOY, and now ENT as well.

The former document is no longer available - a shame, really, since it had a nice Borg Collective symbol in the background - while the Coda version should be locatable in the General RP, Systems and Mechanics forum. Go to the Search function, narrow the range to the above-mentioned forum, and type in "The Assimilation Process". This should, hopefully, get you started on the correct path to locating this work in its current form.

I am not aware of any canon references that describe the origin of the Borg. However, what you're describing sounds like a short story from "Strange New Worlds VI".

The Strange New Worlds books come out at the rate of one a year, and last year's book contained a story in the "Speculations" section, called "The Beginning" by Annie Reed. In it, a young woman whose body is ravaged by disease that will not respond to treatment is injected with nanomachines -- and these turn her into the first Borg in the process of driving out the virus. This effect, and what happened next, were not anticipated by those who administered the treatments.

I have seen at least one book that contains, in the back, a timeline that attempts to incorporate stories from the Strange New Worlds series, although I don't remember which book this was.

Anyway, if you want to look for Strange New Worlds VI, the ISBN is 0-7434-6753-1. Stories in the book vary from very good to fairly bad, IMO. At $15, the books are usually a decent read.

    Fesarius, that's it!

Thank you so much, now I can stop going nuts over this.

And I was right about it being in an online timeline, Geoff Trowbridge's Chronolgy of Written Star Trek Fictionhttp://http://www.maplenet.net/~trowbridge/timeline.htm was where I saw it... I was checking so many sites the other day, I just got it confused with a PbeM site.

And actually, I own SNW VI. Now I've actually got a reason to read it.

And thanks, D.S. McBride , for the info about the other Borg history. I'll be looking for it.

    Thanks to you both!

PS: Good to meet another Baltimore native Trekker, Fesarius. Will you be going to Shore Leave?
