    Keeping score, Cook? For shame!

As for me, if things hadn't happened, I would still be perfectly content that WotC publish Star Trek RPG because I know the former LUG staff would be the one to design them.

If things hadn't happened, I would still question Decipher and their ability to make roleplaying games. Thank goodness, their one functioning brain cell convinced them to hire the laid off LUG staff.

But things turn out for the better, and not for the reason you posted the above message. I am happy that LUG staff will continue to design Star Trek RPG. Had Decipher hired someone else, I'd still question them to this day.

Regardless, I'm still not buying their card games.

AFAIK, there are no more "big surprise" announcements due. The Middle-Earth RPG license was it. If they say anything else earth-shattering, I'll be as surprised as you guys.

As for rules, the general intent is to use the same rules engine for both games, with necessary tweaks and changes as appropriate for each property. I'll know more after my upcoming trip to L.A., but I think you guys will like what we come up with.

As a long-time Tolkien fan and the guy theoretically functioning as "Project Leader" for the ME books on the schedule, I assure you I have every intention of crafting the rules to simulate the "feel" and coolness of Tolkien as much as I can.

Steve, tell em from me, I liked your writing in Trek, and reckon you can turn this into a doozy, so you've got my sales...

And I havn't purchased or played a Fantasy game in over 10 years...

...Not that my opinions worth a damn!

Strangely, neither have I. I was not terribly fond of the MERP from Iron Crown (?) when I was a player in a campaign that used it. It was too... I don't know... too something.

I'm a fan of Middle Earth. I'd like to run a long-standing game in that setting. Particularly if the system itself is good... and NOT D&D3 (or any other iteration of that system) and not d20.

In any case, assuming the very talented Long Steve is involved, I'm certain that I'll be picking up my first fantasy game since my Basic D&D Boxed Set (the one with the blue softcover book).

And I'm expecting great things, Steve. Heh.

I actually liked MERP... the idea that a warrior can get hacked and hacked by blows that would kill a normal person (a la D&D) never set well with me.

In MERP the mightiest fighter could be felled with a single arrow... combat is supposed to be deadly.

In my old MERP campaign we had less combat and more thinking than any game I've run.

    Cool

This is what's so great about having Steve here -- Steve can let the cat out of the bag and if anyone gives me a call I just say, "But Steve is the one that said it!"

(I'm always gun-shy on how much I should say.)

No big announcements this week, however I (and TrekRPGNet) have been asked to participate in a number of avenues regarding the new Trek RPG.

BTW, a separate thread has been opened for Middle Earth discussion in the General Area.

ICON LOTR! This was mentioned on mIRC last night and I kinda joked about this. Excellent!!!
However can we trust this Long fellow to produce a quality product? After all Spacedock only rates 9 out of 10. Well maybe 10 out of 10.

To touch on a few recent points...

Your opinion's definitely worth a damn, Dan; so is everyone else's opinion here. Without y'all, I wouldn't have a job writing such cool stuff. As much as I can, I want to give the fans and gamers what they want -- so let me know! I can't satisfy everyone (heck, I can't even do things exactly the way I want ), but as near as I can, I try.

As for MERP -- I agree that the Rolemaster system certainly has its benefits, esp. as compared to early D&D. However, I think that sort of emphasis on minutia, rules, tables, and other such folderol is exactly what a ME RPG does not need. I want rules that enhance people's fun in the system by emulating the feel of Tolkien's works and the nature of epic fantasy drama. And I think that the LUG crew (or whatever we're now to be called ) can produce such rules -- or at least core rules I can adapt to do what I want, much as Owen adapted ICON to emulate Dune.

There's a big part of me that loves ultra-detailed systems -- like the HERO System or the rules I created for Spacedock. They definitely have their place. But I don't think that place is Middle-Earth, where drama and excitement, not one's ability to choose the right weapon and combat maneuver from a list, should rule the day.

I'm a big Tolkien fan, as I said -- anyone want to correspond in Tengwar, for example? I hope and expect to create a book that Tolkien fans, gamer and non-gamer alike, will enjoy!

    Thumbs up

Of course, without you, the creators of the game we love to play, this entire board wouldn't be here!

To the Magnificent Seven of LUG: Mega Kuddos Guys. Q'apla! If your work is a tenth as good, it will STILL be a smashing success.

May your efforts keep us entertained!

This is a shameless plug, but is there any chance that my recently invented Romulan language will be used for the new Romulan supplement?

Given its dependance on the VLI material, there may, or may not, be copyright issues, so I am not really pushing it, but it is a neat language, if I do say so mysel'.

    Steve, you would know.

For details on the language, see the Romulan thread in this same chatroom.

Note that it has one big advantage, if you put me in the acknowledgments of the game, you can use it for free. Really.

I'll give my support to that notion. The Romulan Lexicon that AR has produced would be an excellent addition to a future Romulan sourcebook.

No. We would never use something which poses potential copyright/IP issues, nor, I suspect, work we did not specifically commission.

This thread has turned to be huge... I'll open a new one, and see if I can close this one myself. If not, I summon The Duck for such a complicate task

Ok, I said that I would be the first to admit if I were wrong about something in my previous post.

I read a post today by Steve Long, in which he said that two Trek books are set for late summer release (Aug./Sept I believe). Great, I asure you I will be properly exstatic when I see them on the bookshelves. However, since this is the only piece of info that has passed by my eyes saying, firmly, that something is happening on the ST RPG front I will remain a bit of a skeptic on the subject until I see the finished product. "Once bitten, twice shy" and all that.
