    New to ST (Coda) Question..

    Hello all,

I just purchased the Coda version of Star Trek and have a quick, simple question for all of you experts.

In regards to the Starship Officer Profession, under the Tier I Professional Ability Starship Duty, it states that this ability allows you to ignore the prerequisites for the Elite Professions.

My question is: Do you ignore all of the prerequisites, even though it states Starship Duty as well as other skills etc... as the prerequisites? Or is the other pre-requisites there if you decide to move into the Elite classes during play?

It is written a little vaguely in the rules, although I may have just missed the additional details in this regard.

Thank you for any insight into my question.

Yes, you ignore the other prerequisites if you have Starship Duty. IIRC, the prerequisites should read Starship Duty OR [insert prerequisites here].

I did a quick search for "Elite Professions" and found this thread that may help you out as well:

The Starship Duty professional ability replaces all the prerequisites for any starship officer elite profession. The errata (found on this forum as well - see the 2 posts just above yours) indicates that the prerequisites should have been stated as Statship Duty or ..... the other prerequisites. This allows non-starship officers to take some of the elite professions, while removing the requirements for those who follow the traditional path.

    Hope that answers your question!

This is mainly guesswork, and might not be the answer of the question you're asking, since I don't have my books in front of me...

The Starship Duty ability allows you to ignore the prereqs for the Starship Officer Elite Professions only. Basically if you're creating a Starship Officer, taking Starship Duty means you can transfer into any of the Elite Professions with no problem, as opposed to someone who wanted to create a Scientist or Diplomat who wanted to transfer to a Starship Elite Profession. Other base professions must meet the prereqs for moving into the Starship Officer elite professions. The Starship Duty ability is meant as a Starship Officer profession exclusive perk since it's conceivably and relatively easier for a Starfleet Academy grad to learn to run a ship's tactical board than it would be for, say, a civilian merchant.

Thank you all for the quick response! I am sure I will have at least another question or two b4 I finish reading the books. I just got them last night, so I am still devouring the Players guide.

Also, remember that the Starship Officer profession shouldn't be confused with "Starfleet officer." The profession applies equally to the Cardassian fleet, the Romulan Star and Imperial Klingon navies, Merchant Marines, and even civilians who learned OTJ to operate a starship as their primary profession.

Others have answered this already, but this question -- and many others -- are covered the errata thread. You should read that first.
