Thread: The Kzinti

  1. #16
According to the description provided in the Ringworld game, male Kzinti average 2.4 meters in height and 200-225 kilograms in mass (they are at least as strong and tough as Gorn, I would imagine). Despite their size, Kzinti are quite agile (this is probably best modeled in CODA by a bonus to the Quickness reaction rather than a modifier to Agility, as they have no greater manual dexterity). They flourish in colder climates than humans and are uncomfortable in desert or tropical environs (Thin-Blooded: Heat as a racial flaw might be in order).

Here is what I've cobbled together by adapting SFB Kzinti, I figure they got the name because a member of the first contact team was a scifi fan.

    The Kzinti
Personality: The Kzinti are aggressive and impulsive felinoid carnivores. They have a reputation for eating their prisoners (rightly deserved). They prefer close quarters combat with their "natural" weapons, combat claws and their teeth. They have a reputation for toying with prisoners or hunting them. The Kzinti have suffered through many internal conflicts, which keep them from becoming more of a threat to their neighbors.

Physical Description: The Kzinti are large (over 2 meters tall and weigh over 150 kilos) humanoids of clear feline ancestry. They are covered in fur, have cat ears, and no tail. Their fur tends to have a tiger stripe pattern.

Homeworld: Little is known of the Kzinti Homeworld, other than it orbits the star 61 Ursa Majorus at a distance somewhat greater than 1 AU. Its day is 27 hours and 36 minutes long. Its year seems to be one and a half times longer than Terra's. It was assumed that it is a lush tropical planet, but recently it has been learned that it is drier and cooler than Terra. They have also expanded and conquered several nearby systems. Several of these systems contained planets with sentient races but does not allow these races to leave their planets. The Kzinti trade with them and smugglers have had some dealings with them, but they have no space faring capability of their own.

Culture: The Kzinti government is a confederation. The lesser factions or clans are governed by dukes. The dukes form a governing council and elect one of them to be the Patriarch. The Patriarch serves a term of six years. The Patriarch chooses five dukes to form the Pentarchy, which advises the Patriarch. The Kzinti worship several gods, the most important seem to deal with the hunt. The Kzinti males dominate their society. Kzinti males tend to take multiple females as mates with one female being his "Prime". The Prime is in charge of the household. Kzinti females rarely take occupations out of the household. Kzinti place a high value on honor and fight duels to the death to settle such disputes, to Kzinti society appears to be overly polite to off-worlders. Society is broken down into clans, ruled by a hereditary noble house, and these clans are broken down into castes, with a warrior caste, merchant caste, and worker caste. Each caste sends three representatives to the clan council, these advise the duke and represent the people. There have been several wars with the Federation and the Klingons. The First Federation-Kzinti war started in 2225 and lasted until 2231. The Second Federation-Kzin war was in 2240 and ended in 2245. The Federation's superior technology and training were the deciding factors in both conflicts. As of 2268, the Federation and Kzinti have signed a peace treaty, the Treaty of Friendship. The Kzinti still have hostile relations with the Klingon Empire. The Kzinti have been refitting their fleets with technology gained in the Treaty of Friendship.

Languages: Kzinti , Federation Standard is known by some nobles and starship officers. Kzinti also have a complicated body language and use scents to communicate emotional state, a gingery scent denotes excitement - either anger or fear.

Common Names: Kzinti have several names, their common names are structured as clan name, then given name. They also have a "Battlename" which only close friends know.

Here's Patrick Murphy's Kzinti template for ICON:

    ---------------------------------------------------
    Species Template: Kzinti
    By Patrick M. Murphy

The Kzin are a race of powerful and aggressive bipedal felinoids which stand about eight feet tall. Their females are unintelligent. They also produce telepaths which are able to read minds, though they are resistant to reading minds of herbivores or females.

    Attributes
    Fitness 4 [6]
       Strength +2
       Vitality +2
    Coordination 2 [6]
       Dexterity +1
    Intellect 1 [5]
    Presence 1 [5]
       Empathy -1
    Psi 2 [6]
       Focus -1

    Skills
    Athletics (choose Specialization) 2 (3)
    Culture (Kzinti) 2 (3)
    History (Kzinti) 1 (2)
    Language (Kzin) 2
Unarmed Combat (choose Specialization) 2 (3)
World Knowledge (Kzin homeworld) 1 (2)

    Typical Advantages/Disadvantages
Toughness +2, Code of Honor (must fight to the death when engaged in hand-to-hand combat) -3, Intolerant (herbivores and pacifists) -2
    --------------------------------------------------

I don't personally think that the basic Kzin has a Psi of 2 - this really should read 0 [6], as Niven seems to indicate that psi is relatively rare among the Kzin. I'd swap the three points used there for Energy Weapons (Dispruptor) 1 (2).

Once real life (not to mention everything else) gives me some space I'll type up my CODA pass at the Kzinti and post it.

I meant to do so well before now, but it's been kind of a hectic month. Sorry.

    Some Kzinti info

A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

    Description and Notes
Fleet data: The Kzinti Police Ship was designed with the help of Federation overseers to patrol Kzinti space after one of numerous defeats suffered by the Kzinti Patriarchy at the hands of the United Federation of Planets. The Federation, of course, did not want to put a powerful starship design in the hands of their belligerent protectorate, and steered them towards a very low-powered, utilitarian design, meant only to be used against equally low-powered pirates and the like. Still, numerous Police Ships were instead used by Kzinti "pirates" to raid passing vessels, Federation or not, although it is suspected that these "stolen" craft had the unofficial sanction of the Kzinti Patriarchy and are in reality privateers. The design is now more than a hundred years old but still found with frequency near Kzinti space. The craft has no transporters but can land on a planet’s surface. These ships are typically crewed by four Kzinti, one of which is a telepath.

Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters: The Traitor's Claw, commanded by Chuft Captain, whose crew assaulted members of the U.S.S. Enterprise in order to take possession of the Slaver Weapon.

    Description and Notes
Fleet data: These vessels have been in use since the Kzin Accords were approved by the UFP over a two centuries ago. These ships allow the Kzinti to patrol their territory and protect themselves from piracy.
More often then not though these ships have often been used by the Kzin to commit acts of piracy and Starfleet tries to monitor the production and deployment of these vessels but does not always succeed.
Early in 2350, the Kzin Accords were recently modified by the UFP council to allow the weapon systems to be upgraded to a Type V Phaser array.

Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters:
Several ships of this class have been noteworthy, too may to list but all have one thing in common, they were used for pirating.

    Author's Notes
This vessel was designed for use and inspired by Molotov's adventure “A Hungry Season” It was further inspired by Patrick Murphy's Kzinti Assault Cruiser which I also used when I ran the adventure. The dates have been changed to correspond to the mini-campaign I am currently running while I continue to convert over the Challenger. Thank you Patrick and Molotov for the inspiration.

    Description and Notes
Fleet data: A missing Starfleet Intelligence operative turned up in 2365, claiming to have been held captive by a 'renegade' Kzinti commander for the past year. During that time, he witnessed several new Kzinti ship designs with uncharacteristically high-tech weapon and computer systems. Among these vessels was a design akin to a destroyer. While no evidence of a cloaking device was noted, Starfleet Intelligence became acutely aware that new reconnaissance missions were called for to learn more of these vessels' capabilities, especially once these vessels were encountered during the recent Subjenix Flu epidemic and 'supposed' Kzin pirates interfered with relief efforts. The political fallout of this revelation cost several analysts in the intelligence community their careers and saw increased Starfleet patrols near the worlds of the Kzinti Patriarchy.
One such vessel, the U.S.S. Forrestal is currently trying to locate the base where these ships operate from as they have not been located within the Patriarchy.

Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters:
Slasher, Render, and Ripper were the three destroyers encountered by the U.S.S. Forrestal when it came to the aid of the relief convoy. Much of the above information above comes from the ship's battle record. The Render was destroyed and the Ripper self-destructed to avoid capture in that encounter.

Fleet data: A missing Starfleet Intelligence operative turned up in 2268, claiming to have been held captive by a 'renegade' Kzinti commander for the past year. During that time, he witnessed several new Kzinti ship designs with uncharacteristically high-tech weapon and computer systems. Among the largest of these vessels, the operative insisted, was a new thirty-two-deck 'assault cruiser' with devastating weaponry and carrying a regiment of Kzinti troops. While no evidence of a cloaking device was noted, Starfleet Intelligence became acutely aware that new reconnaissance missions were called for to learn more of these vessels' capabilities. The political fallout of this revelation cost several analysts in the intelligence community their careers and saw increased Starfleet patrols near the worlds of the Kzinti Patriarchy.

Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters:
Fury's Fangs, the Assault Cruiser seen by a Starfleet operative in 2267, is the only known example of this class, but this vessel has not been encountered anywhere else by Starfleet, so its existence is still in doubt.
