Thread: Schools in the Federation

Isn't there a specific school that Dr. McCoy mentions attending. I assume he went to Starfleet Academy, but I'm sure I remember him mentioning Ol' Miss?

Lt. Caroline Palmas was the ships A & A Officer (WMfA).

Lt. Marla McGyvers was ships Historian (Space Seed.)

And I do believe I read somewhere that Doc. McCoy was a grad of Ol' Miss, he got his MD through Starfleet Medical I think. If this is true then there is also examples of people starting their education in civilian schools then moving on to the Academy.

Since everyone is pushing their respective Alma Maters then I shall push the great school that I am currently attending, that being Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Oldest University in Canada, so I think it safe to say it will be around in the 23rd/24th C.

I would suspect it would once again depend on what school/world you were on.

Our GM has the big sport being football (soccer, for the yanks): there's a Federation Cup, where the various worlds compete. I tend to agree this would be Earth's main contribution to interstellar sports.

The others I would assume: martial arts competitions (probably non-style specific), field & track events, gymnastics, probably basketball. There would be a few games that would be less popular, but stubbornly held to be traditionalists: sculling at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale, etc. American Football in the North American continent (and probably Andor...) Hockey might still be big, but it also might be too violent for the Federation culture at large. (I'm sure the Canadians and Andorians would have brilliant matches, however.) We know baseball is still around, but the impression in DS9 is that it is a niche sport...like dodgeball. (Stay with 'the Ocho' -- if it's almost a sport, we've got it!)

The GM and I differ on the look of future sports: he sees a whimped out "nerf-world", I believe he calls it, safety-obsessed sports culture. I suspect there would be less violence-based sport, but private sport -- such as mountain climbing and the like -- would be increasingly more dangerous and quasi-suicidal: in a 'perfect world' such of the Federation, there would be a lot of people who are bored by the safety and 'perfection' of the society and would look for a means to feel 'alive.'

To that end, I think race sports would still be big: rally races on Mars, targa races and TT motorcylce (or the 24th C equivalent) rallies in picturesque areas like Isle of Man or Nova Scotia. Probably shuttlecraft races.

Uhm, question. Has he never seen the show whenever they talk Parise Squares? From what is said on screen (sans any real rules for the game) about it I certainly wouldn't call it a "nerf sport." Doesn't Riker go over some of the injuries he sustained on the Academy's PS Team in one ep.?

I would think the Andorians would be more interested in Rugby, then hockey or football...after all in Rugby their is no armour.

    Lioness

The Andorians and Hockey - Gee that would be scary!!- Forechecking would take on a WHOLE new meaning-and watch out for the chakas.

    BTW- How is the knee
I was born in a camp on Bajor- I joined the Resistance at 12 to fight for my people and my freedom. I joined Starfleet to help KEEP that freedom. As the Prophets will it I shall not fail you, Captain.

    -Leei'vor'na Medical University
-I had a Andorian character who graduated from the University of Lor'Vela ( a school I made up.)

Checked and cleared for flight. Already back at work. Just one of those niggling injuries left over from the helicopter crash that ended my military career.

However, I'm still here. Athena: 1, Fate: zip.

I think most planets/cultures would retain their 'traditional' sports even after joining the wider galaxy.

We know things with racquets are still popular Bashir almost went professional in tennis, and as we know, played racquetball as well. And the Bajorans have springball (did we see Kira playing once?) I remember lacrosse getting mentioned at some point in TNG or DS9, and Parisis squares is repeatedly referred to as violent and dangerous.

On baseball, it's not really around as an organized sport any longer. The Cestus colony had sort of re-discovered it. Sisko was certainly surprised to find out anyone was playing.

I don't think Feddies are as soft as the first few seasons of TNG made them look. The folks on DS9 and Voyager enjoyed lots of less-than-safe activities. Young people will always be immortal though

Hum, a Klingon game perhaps? I have heard it mentioned many times, but has any detail ever been given about it?

Hmmm, I don't think so. I seem to remeber mention of an Academy Tournament that happened well before the Klingo-Federation Peace Treaty.

I suspect that the ready availability of medical care -- it's both cheap (or free) and much better than what we have presently, might encourage folks to take *more* rather than fewer risks. Sure, falling off a mountain is still likely to kill you. But many, many other things can be easily, and completely repaired.

Yeah! Like Sub-Orbital Skydiving! That's the way I want to end my life, triple skipping off the atmosphere.

Sulu was a fencer, and a target shooter with antique weapons. Either or both could be organized sports.

That Vulcan puzzle game Kim kept losing might have organized games, like chess. And chess is probably still tournament played as well.
