    Species Skills

A question came up this weekend when I was working with my players during character creation. During the Species Skills phase of character creation is there a limit to how many languages can be purchased?

I have a character (Trill with a 13 in Int) that received 26 points and wanted to add more points to other Languages.

Languages gained during species skills are usually limited to those listed under the Species as native languages. Other languages can be chosen if your Narrator approves it (and you have a good enough story to go with it... )

Note that 6 levels is the maximumk you can have in any one skill during character creation and 6 levels in a language is considered native-level fluency.

Where does it say that +6 is native-level fluency?

It doesn't list it anywhere in the Trek game (to my knowledge), but this was to be established for LOTR in Paths of the Wise: Magicians & Loremasters. If you look at the series characters presented in the NG, they all have 6 levels in their native languages...

Statistically, it makes more sense to have "native fluency" at +6. However, I'd rather there be a more concrete rule to fall back on so I can give it to some of my more number-crunching players. I have a feeling that, "Oh, Doug Burke said it's the way LOTR does it," won't fly.

I have a house rule that gives my players' characters native-level fluency in a language of their choice -- essentially their birth language. There were both cheers and jeers as I made my rules-change announcement on our private list.

Well as Doug Burke is right now the official word of the DEC RPG's, I'd say that's how it is.

Got a little brown on your nose, Gandalf? Honestly, I was prepared to accept Doug's answer, and I was joking around for the most part. There's no need to blow sunshine and rainbows up his ass.

    OOOoooOOOooohhh handbags and dawn ladies!

This has actually been discussed quite in depth accross the boards some time ago. it was generally agreed on that 6 represented a really good grasp on language, but 3 or 4 will more than likelly suffice.

Doug is (technically as far as I am aware was never un-made) the Decipher Net Representative - i.e. he can speak with a certain ammount of authority on the subject.

If you want to go in another direction or make a house ruling then you can, it's your game - and no one is stopping you!
