[ICON] What skill for what weapon

There have been mention of several different types of weaponry in the Star Trek universe, both canon and non-canon that I've been having trouble with placing to the appropriate skill category.

Now the following are with out a doubt in the listed Skill categories

    Energy Weapon
    • Hand Held Lasers
    • Civilian Stunner (A type one w/ only the Stun settings, non-canon)
    • Type 1
    • Type 2a (early TNG Dust Buster design)
    • Type 2b (later TNG, All of DS9 & VOY)
    • Type 3a (TNG, DS9)
    • Type 3b (funky VOY design)
    • Type 3c (compression rifles, booyeah)
    • Type 3c-A (darker, altered muzzle; in my game it's the Ground Forces standard)
    • Type 3 EVA (ST: First Contact; used for micro-gravity operations w/ an EVA suit)
    • Type 3 ACB or Federation Sniper Rifle (non-canon source's)
    • Cardassian Pistol & Rifle
    • Bajorian Pistol & Rifle
    • Klingon Pistol & Rifle (i.e. Pistol with a large stock added)
    • Romulan Pistol
    • Early Romulan Rifle A (the boxy looking things from TNG: Reunification, IIRC)
    • Later Romulan Rifle B (also used by the Remans in Nemesis)
    • Pirate Designs (non-canon, Renegades, Raiders & Rogues)
    • Sleeve or Hold-Out Designs (Non-canon, Renegades, Raiders & Rogues)
    • Dominion Polaron Pistol & Rifle(Assault Rifle)
    • Schorcher (mentioned in Renegades, Raiders & Rogues, description fits with what was scene in VOY: Unity - Ep: with the break away Borg colony)

    Heavy Weapons
    • Photon Mortar (TOS: Arena, LUG)
    • Mounted Phaser (TOS: The Cage, Steve Long's DW:FoA. Could this also be a Type-4 Phaser?)

    Projectile Weapons
    • TR-116 (The Federations archaic slug thrower, lets leave out the part about the micro-transporter, for now)
    • Federation Grenade Launcher (Fan made object that made sense)
    • Various other boom sticks used by primitives throughout the galaxy

But the following have been a thorn in the side of the game for a long time now. This is where I no longer follow the separation between the different Skill categories.
    • Longbow/Crossbow (real world that has been scene in TNG & VOY)
      *Primitive Weapon or Projectile Weapon?
    • Nausicaan War Staff (non-canon, also falls under Primitive Weapons for Melee uses)
      *Heavy weapon or Energy weapon?
    • Tetreon Pulse Launcher (mentioned, but have we scene one from a canon source? Going by the PC game Elite Forces 1 & 2 it is a two handed object that works like a man-portable vulcan chain gun, used by both the Federation (green bolts) and Klingon Empire (red frazzled bolts) that I like to use)
      *Heavy weapon or Energy weapon?
    • Isomagnetic Disintegrator (the Bazooka looking thing Worf used in ST: Insurrection?)
      *Heavy weapon or Energy weapon
    • Enriched Ultritium Artillery (Steve Long's DW:FoA)
*Heavy weapon or Shipboard systems: Tactical?
    • Transporter Artillery (Steve Long's DW:FoA)
*Heavy weapon or Shipboard systems: Transporter?
    • Heavy Missile Launchers (Steve Long's DW:FoA)
*Heavy weapon or Shipboard systems: Tactical?

Any help, thoughts, better ideas (weapons I forgot to mention)

It seems to me that the published LUG material lists such items as Primitive Weapon skills. I believe examples are in the Romulan Box set, Planetary Adventures and Holodeck Adventures books.

Don't forget the Ferengi Energy Whip.

Yes it was published as a primitive weapon, but the use of a bow type of weapons have nothing to with the use of a sword, bat'leth, or club. A bow, I think, has more in common with a slug thrower than any melee weapon.

Arrrgh. Yet another design hard to catagorize, an energy weapon that is used more like a melee weapon. Thanks for pointing that one out redwood973.

    Primitive Projectile Weapon?

As for the Ferengi Energy Whip my house rule is that as an energy weapon it is a stand alone skill. It being so diffrent from other energy weapons I can't see anyone being able to use it simply because they have used a phaser before. One must then also have the primitive weapon (whip) skill.

I keep going back and forth between it being the standard Ferengi sidearm (when Ferengi where introduced it was the only weapon they had, and seemed very skilled in its use) and it being an uncommon weapon found along the frontier. A weapon of intimidation. Hrm, the Ferengi version of the cat-o-nine tails? A dai mon must keep his crew focused on earning profit for himself and not for themselves, right? But I guess that is a discussion for another topic.

I would probably list this one as 'exotic' and require it as a specific skill, since it's so unusual from stock weapons, even primitive ones. I would use this for certain race-specific weapons such as the Bat'lah (sp), etc... only make them 'regular' weapons for members of that race.

Primitive could probably safely be split between 'melee' and 'ranged' without needing to be more specific. After all, if you're going to be using a LOT of varied primitive weapons, you might not be doing Trek anymore.

So does any one else have any other opinions on the other weapons?
    • Nausicaan War Staff
    • Tetreon Pulse Launcher
    • Isomagnetic Disintegrator
    • Enriched Ultritium Artillery
    • Transporter Artillery
    • Heavy Missile Launchers

You'll have to describe how the War Staff is supposed to work.

The Tetryon Pule Launcher and Isomagnetic Disintegrator are both Heavy Weapons specialisations.

As for the Enriched Ultritium Artillery, Transporter Artillery and Heavy Missile Launchers, I'd suggest either creating a new skill, Artillery, or making the specialisations of Heavy Weapons - I use the latter. I also use it for other vehicle-based weapons, like vehicle-mounted Phasers

What (or, where) is the Nausicaan War Staff from? I've not been able to find any reference to it in any of the books nor is my search-fu finding it on line.

Happened to be going through the "Planets of the UFP" book ... Nausicaan Warstaff is in there ... quite a nasty weapon ... can be used as a bladed weapon, club & energy weapon ... I think the Nausicaans stole the idea from Jabb's Skiff guards ...

That sucks, wish I had found that before I made up my own Warstaff.
