Well I didn't really know where to put this since I am interested in both ICON and CODA solutions/Ideas to this question so I brought it here.
How do you handle Weather and Environmental effects of the PC's heath, condition, and well being. The core books are silent on this issue (or I can't find were it is) as far as I can tell. Specificly I am interested in Ideas as to the effects (both short and long term) of Jungle, Humid, Desert and Artic climets included any general effects of cold or hot temperatures on Players and perhaps the effect on encumberence (movement) on the player.
And no Easy Cop out with "Starfleet makes Uniforms which can perform in all temperatures" answers. I know its a big question but frankly I don't know the rules good enough to tackle the subject alone.
Hmmm - smells like Netbook time... Planetary Survival Netbook anyone?
Part of the problem will be determing a baseline environment for each species. Humans are most comfortable in temperate climes with moderate humidity. Ferengi appear to favour temperate but very humid environments, while Klingons like hot humid coditions and Vulcans are more comfortable with dry heat.
Subjects a netbooks would have to cover would include:
Climate and Weather
Water and Food
Terrain
Survival Equipment
Improvised Tools, Weapons and Shelter
First Aid
Template: Starfleet SAR (Search and Rescue)
Advanced Training: Starfleet SERE (Survival, Evasion, Rescue & Escape) School
The Starfleet Survival Guide has some nifty (non-game) info which would be easy to interpret in game terms. A copy of the SAS Survival Handbook would be extremely useful. Games which might be of use include The Morrow Project, Aftermath and most games from Tri-Tac Games (if you can slog through the massive tables, execrable writing style and terrible layout).
I'm willing to put some time into a project, subject to the usual constraints.
Any effort you could make and I could help with would be greatly appreciated. This started because I was getting to the point with my Ground Force project that i was begining to think about uniforms and the effect of long term exposure to the "outdoors" would have on troops. At the same time the obvious benefit to everyone else was obvious so I brought it up here.
The fact that it effects a host of different races and that their body phsyiology (sp?) is an aspect I had not thought about i.e. Andorians would make good arctic troops like Vulcans would as Desert troops. Perhaps make penalities (or boneses) based on a bottom line which would be the races main environment and there to reaction to an alien environment.
