    USS Voden Heavy Cruiser

I want to preface this design with a few comments to set the stage so to speak.

As some of you know, I run what I call a parallel universe game that is quite significantly different from canon and some places even LUG trek. Its background is based a fair amount on the FASA timeline of events and more then a dozen campaigns with twice that number of mini-campaigns.

For anyone familiar with the FASA-Universe, you know that it is far more militant in nature and has far more conflict then protrayed in the various TV series. To add to that has been a number of conflicts played out in my various series under the FASA rules including the development of what occurred between the end of the TOS movies and the beginning of TNG.

The Voden-class was originally designed for a FASA game set in 2372 by a fellow-GM that wanted to run a game in my universe. So I must tip my hat and give credit to Mike McPherson and Geoff Grens for the originally designing and building the model that led to the creation of the Voden and Mike McPherson for developing and running the campaign itself though due to real life, the campaign never reached a conclusion. This campaign also ran nearly concurrent with my Challenger game.

It was only a short time later that LUG put out there version of Trek. Preferring the system, I switched but did not desire to lose all the Universe's history so I kept it though the universe itself has felt a heavy influence of LUG ideas and materials, it still remains a far more conflicted universe with a somewhat more militant Starfleet exists and a number of additional Borg incursions have occurred.

Recently I returned to Trek gaming, having been inspired to take my universe in a new arc but since I have several new players, I decided to expose them to LUG trek through a number of one-shots and minis that will tie up loose ends in my campaign universe.

One of these strands is the Voden campaign, so I present to you her converted Spacedock stats in preparation for the upcoming scenarios. All I ask is that you bear in mind, the universe she was designed for because that universe is far more deadly then what has been seen in canon.

    Part 4

    Description and Notes
Fleet Data: After the events of Wolf 359 and the continually increasing threats and violence within the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, Starfleet Command began considering various directives to upgrade their fleets and develop new starships to counteract these threats. Some of the more renowned classes came out of the Perimeter Defense Directive, others like the Galaxy-Class Mark III upgrade were the pet projects of various Admirals with the pull to push it through. The Voden-Class was designed at the request of the Military Branch of the Strategic Operations Command.

The design specifications required that the starship be capable of carrying Rapid Response or Ground Forces for rapid deployment to hot zones. Furthermore it was required to be able to temporarily hold or slow down the advance of any Borg vessels that it may be deployed against. Lieutenant Commander S’reye and Lieutenant Jared Pol were assigned to head the project.

Realizing that designing from scratch was not an option given the time constraints placed upon final development, the team decided to use the Galaxy-Class space frame and modify it accordingly. Keeping the engineering or secondary hull essentially unchanged, they removed most of the connecting interhull region between the saucer and engineering sections, effectively laying one on top of the other and displacing the saucer further back along the engineering section. The pylons were also inverted, aligning them along the port and starboard ventral sections of the engineering hull, placing the nacelles in almost the opposite position to those upon a Galaxy-Class Explorer. Furthermore, the weapons systems were augmented by taking a page from the Miranda-Class as a Weapons Pod roll-bar was built into the engineering hull. Within this weapons pod is a torpedo launcher affectionately known as the Gatling Launcher given its unique appearance for it consists of six tunes tied into one launcher that when firing a full spread in rapid succession looks like nothing more then the Gatling Gun from Earth’s Old West.

Near the end of 2369, the design was submitted for approval. In a surprise decision the design team had also taken a page from the German Naval Policies of Earth during the Second World War and developed the Fenris Pocket-Cruiser, something of a cross between a runabout, an attack fighter and the scrapped Defiant project. Furthermore, the Voden-Class had a dedicated launch bay for this design. Another surprise design feature was a dedicated launch bay capable of housing up to a dozen of Starfleet’s new attack fighter. This created within the design the ability to carry its own support fleet while performing its duties. The design was immediately approved.

Unfortunately, while the design appeared excellent on paper and the prototype performed beyond expectations in the Dominion War, this design proved to be a nightmare to build much less produce in a regular production run with complications constantly cropping up. This caused major delays to the point that the prototype did not begin final testing and shake down until late in 2372. This did allow a number of new technologies to be incorporated into the design but given the serious strain upon Federation resources after the war, it is widely believed that no production run will be ordered as Starfleet focuses on other designs not as prone to difficulty.

Due to the Heimdall’s damage in the Breen attack on the shipyards at Earth and the changing attitudes after the war, additional changes were made to the ship before it was launched. The launch bays for the fighters and cruiser were converted to regular shuttle bays with an increase in its shuttle and runabout compliment.

    .
Design/Game Notes: Treat the Gatling Launcher as one launcher with a spread of 12, it is for descriptive effect and something a touch different predominantly.

In my timeline based originally off of the FASA material, the Voden acquired and adapted a Klingon Cloaking Device while serving with the Klingon Expeditionary Force trapped in the Gamma Quadrant. This was late 2373. To simulate this add a Class 8 Cloaking Device [32 SU’s, 320 Power to use] but also add these limitations: Maintenance Checks every 1d6+1 days, the difficulty modifier to detect the Voden is only +6 due to the incompatible systems, and every time the cloak is activated roll 2d6 on a roll of 2 it burns out and can no longer be used until repaired.

With regard to the changes made on the Heimdall, just ignore the fighters and the Fenris Cruiser and replace them with various compliments of shuttles as you see fit in your campaign.

    .
USS Voden’s Plaque: “We shall ride the thunder among the stars, merely students bearing witness to the ancient secrets of Valhalla and with that knowledge imparted to us become the Guardians of the Ancient.” - Lieutenant Jared Pol

    .
Noteworthy vessels / service records / encounters:
USS Voden NCC-51974, Prototype performed and fought exceptionally well during the Dominion War accounting for over twenty destroyed ships before being destroyed in mid-2374; USS Heimdall NCC-52112 damaged during production from Breen attack on Earth, damage delayed launch until after the war’s end.

    Regards,
    CKV.
