Just out of curiousity was the CIWS on the USS Stark working at the time when it was hit?

And should it be a purchaseable firing mode? Or should the standard link to the Lateral sensors be sufficient enough to handle the tracking of the small target?

Star Fleet Battles also had the Phaser Gatling, basically a low power phaser that fired alot of shots fast. Then the Defiant had the pulsed phaser cannon, same idea, only it wasn't low powered. On a large vessel, dedicated point-defense pulse phasers might do the trick. (And the Romulan plasma torp is unstable. Shooting it with phasers would cause it to lose energy, or even detonate. Sulu mentioned it in "Balance of Terror". Of course, Enterprise's phasers were off-line, so they didn't get to test it.)

So what, like a type I pulse phaser array?

could this be a specialized system . . . so you don't have to pay the extra power . . . keep the damage the same . . . and increase the amount of firing per 'action'?

    hmm...that could work
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.
