Actually, they are a parody of an entire genre of cartoon, which includes the "cat'n'mouse" cartoons (Tom and Jerry, Mr. Jinx and many others), as well as the Wile E. Coyote anf Roadrunner and the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons, among many others. In the "cat'n'mouse" arena, they bear very little resemblance to Tom and Jerry, as those two characters were generally allies.

I accept all your correction as accurate... up to this point, where I disagree just because the vast majority of Tom and Jerry cartoons I have seen portrayed them as enemies. (Though I'll admit I have seen a few of them as allies against someone else, and it's certainly possible I've not seen them all.)
