    Journalists In Star Trek

    Greetings,

One of the things that has always puzzled me about the Trek universe is how is news and other information disseminated to the populace? Does the Federation have journalists and if so how would they operate?

I would estimate that it would be much like today with professional news services and an evolved version of the 'blogsphere' for each planet as well as intra-galacticaly read versions. The book "A Time for War, A Time for Peace" actually mentions several of the news services such as the Federation News Service (FNS).
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

Well as for the second part of your question, Star Trek: Generations showed a group of reporters on the bridge of the Enterprise-B.

Still as annoying as any 20-21st century paparazzi.

How quickly they forget Jake actually freelance for the FNS on DS9 in the last couple seasons.

NO NO NO guys! You're forgetting 'A Briefing with Neelix! Surelly the greatest Starfleet news service ?

Actually I think what they do is watch 'Days of our lives' Reruns on 6 TV's at once.. ok maybe that's only Kes and Neekix in Futures end

I think that there would probably be a certain amount of sensationalism and such on Earth, because Humans like that.. and Earth is really bland in the 24th century (except for holodecks of course) but by and large I think that computers would filter out a quantity of the news for you, as it always seems highly efficient as a research tool.. of course if no report is written or it's classified.. that's when the investigative journalism would creep in

It would have been nice to have seen Jake actually DO some reporting or investigative journalism, to see how they do it, but he barelly did it and he only ever looked useless and fresh when he did!

I always figured the late-20th-Century type of "journalist" went out en masse, in a manner similar to that of the Great Lawyer Purge after WWIII. (Encounter at Farpoint)

Okay, "figured" is the wrong word. More like "hoped."
