IIRC, it's a fan-produced movie/series sort of thing, along the lines of Exeter and New Voyages

I love Hidden Frontier. Shaky at first, but after the first few, it's been rockin' along. They've built some good arcs into the series. They have limited resources, but do well with what they have.

TOS also had 'limited resources', and that spawned 30+ years of entertainment.

Lets hope Hidden Frontier lasts as long.

They plan on only doing 7 'seasons,' and they're in the 6th now. So Hidden Frontier the series proper will end, but the fine folks will start up something else afterwards, though what that is they don't know either. Yet.

HF may have rough edges, but I'd rather have the 36 or 37 episodes that they've done, than wait months or years for some of the other productions like Exeter or New Voyages (Nothing against them though).

I forgot to mention, they've even starting doing the podcast thing like Ron Moore does for Galactica. How funky is that?

Yeah, the quantity is good, but the quality of ST:New Voyages has been outstanding. (And if I could ever figure out why bittorrent won't work on my home setup (but Ares does), I'll DL the DVD quality versions and really enjoy it! )

I mean, I am really looking forward to seeing the Story by DC Fontana, and Walter Koenig both...... don't think it qualifies as a 'fan-film' anymore after that.

So how are they able to do this/operate without being shut down by Viacom? This, more than anything, directly attacks their intellectual property.

Don, are you talking the fan-film thing in general or the New Voyages thing with Fontana and Koenig?

Viacom/Paramount is generally okay with the fan efforts as long as they make no money off them. Most won't even sell CDs/DVDs at cost to avoid the problem, despite many and repeated requests.

    What Sho-sa said.

In addition, it doesn't hurt that Eugene Roddenberry (Son of the Great Bird Himself) is also attached as one of the executive producers...

And no, they make absolutely nothing off of it from what I see. Several people have wanted to actually purchase the DVD versions of the films, but no sale...

The same reason Lucas lets people make Star Wars fan films... as long as they don't make money off of it, or create something damaging to the IP, then no harm, no foul. And if they did go after them, the court costs and negative press would quickly make it not worth it.

If someone DOES try making money off of a fan film (even selling DVDs or CDs at cost... the CD/DVD company is making money off of it, then), all bets are off. Otherwise, fan films seem to be safe.

Granted, this enviroment may change at any moment. But for now, it's rather nice.
