I remember hearing somewhere that the M16 was designed by Matel. But if I saw this being carried by a soldier/marine/sailor/airman . . . my mouth would drop, and I would be laughing hard on the inside.
The M-16 was not designed by Mattel, but was derived from the AR-10/AR-15 family of weapons by Armalite. During the Vietnam War, however, the plastic stock, forestock and pistol grip were reportedly manufatured under license by Mattel. At any rate, the rifle was dubbed the Mattel-16 by persons unknown in the Vietnam theatre of operations, because of the plastic hardware in a time when people were used to wooden stocks on military weapons.

Yet, I hear the Glock has become a favorite of police forces in Northern California.
Eitherway, as long as it does the job well, and stands up to the test of field usage, and time . . . it's good enough for me.
