    Newbie: Professional traits questions

I have two professional traits questions.

    1) Flight Control Officer: Combat Piloting Trait (Player's Guide p. 89). Does the additional helm manuever gained through this trait mean that the starship can also take that helm manuever as an additional action?

    2) Security Officer: Responsive (Player's Guide p. 73). Does the additional combat action per round apply only to personal combat or does it also grant an additional combat action to the starship if the security officer is manning the tactical station?

I'm sorry if these questions have been answered elsewhere.

    1) I suspect not no. PG was written before Starship combat rules were written, so since starship combat rules supercedes NG, it kind of makes it null and void. It implicitly states in NG you can only have two actions a round for Starship combat. That said character actions and maneuvers are two different things.. Technically speaking the pilot may perform 3 actions in his turn, each to do with the helm, yet he may only be involved in one maneuver, both or none. So long as he is using the helm that's fine.

    2) Ditto. He can perfom an additional action per round during starship combat, but the ship it's self can only have two actions. An example of this could be if he was not on the bridge when the attack happened. He would gain aditional actions to race to the bridge to be involved in the combat: Or he could be running tactical sensor scans. or fighting off Borg who beamed on the bridge, in his turn

IIRC, in Starship combat, the ship is allowed a total of two maneuvers. Each character can take more than two actions by incurring the multiple aciton penalty, but the ship itself only gets two. No more.

Thus, Combat Piloting would allow the helmsman/conn to take a total of three actions per round at no penalty IF at least one of them is a Helm maneuver. This basically allows him to retain his two "normal" actions while still reserving one for a necessary Helm maneuver. Note that activating cloaking devices, using sensors and several other actions are not considered maneuvers...

As for Responsive, this shold only apply to personal combat, IMO.

Even though that wasn't the intent, I rather like the ability to give the ship an extra maneuver. The players are supposed to be extarodinary people that can doe extarodinary things. So i guess this will be one of my house rules

I kind of like that idea too. Of course, it is always fun to occasionally throw in an opponent that also has that ability, especially if the PCs don't have it!
