Thread: Other Commendations

    Other Commendations

    I have had reason recently to take a hand in the creation of a Federation Civilian. A member of the Federation News Service. And then Greg turned around and told me that he had dealt with this guys renown, something I hadn't even thought twice about for a civilian. So I got to thinking...

    As a journalist there is an obvious commendation;

    The Pulitzer Prize; +2 Commendation
    +4 Skill Award

    A top literary award for journalists and authors. It is considered a crowning achievment of writing skill and integrity to obtain the prize
    http://www.pulitzer.org/History/history.html#history

    However in thinking about it, some other Civilian awards came up.

    The Carrington Award; +3 Commendation
    +6 Skill Award

    A crowning lifetime achievement award within the medical profession, the average age of a Carrington Award nominee is 100, although the youngest nominee is Dr Julian Basier of Starfleet (in 2371). The Carrington Award is not a Starfleet Commendation

    The Nobel Peace Prize; +2 Commendation
    +4 Openness Award
    This is still the big one. Directly decsended from the Nobel prize of Earth's 20th Century, from Alfred Nobel, the inventor of Dynamite. The Prize is still very Earth-centric, although T'Pau of Vulcan has received a Nobel.
    Lesser nobel prizes are also awarded for Literary achievement and the like. These Commendations are +1, as while there are not well-known, the Nobel prize still carries some clout.

    So. The course of this thread is for Narrators to share Commendations and Awards outside of the Starfleet norm, whether they be Klingon honours, Ferengi Contract or Civilian medals...

    Also any adjustments or suggestions to those above, it would be welcome.

    I would have to say that the Nobel Peace Prize would be +3 Award as well, you said it your self...It's the big one. The others would be +2.

    How about the Zemagni Prize, mentioned in the ep with the M-5 Multi-tronic unit. Daystrom was a recipiant of both the Nobel and Zemagni Prizes. The ZP would probably be a +2 at least.

    Initially, I had the Nobel down as +3. BUT. After consideration the +2 is to represent its importance, but also to show that it is one of several planetary peace prizes. I wanted to save the +3 for an, as yet un-named, Federation version...

    After all why should Earth contribute everything important to the Federation?

    However, I am willing to listen to arguements and opinion. What say the crowd? +2 or +3?

    I would keep the secondary Nobels at +1 though. They are fairly annonymous, and only carry the weight in certain circles. Hell, I couldn't name last years winner of the Nobel for literature?

    I'd say +2 for the Nobel.

    Perhaps the Zemagees (however the hell it may be spelt) prize is the Federation-wide equivalent.

    Interesting stuff Dan.

    I could see a use for it, especially for those characters who have "previous" expirence before joining Starfleet

    Also how much weight does a Nobel or Pulitzer carry in space?

    As I said it was mentioned in the ep with the M-5. Kirk stated that Richard Daystrom had, in the past, won the Nobel and Zemagni (sp?) prizes. Beyond that it is left to imagination.

    In space nobody can hear applause?

    My rule of thumb was;

    +1 = Local commendation (National) or low ranking planetary medals.

    +2 = Important planetary awards, or low ranking Federation ones.

    and +3 = for trans-Federation instantly recognisable commendations.

    I will also be using the old "Greater Comet" comendation from the FASA Romulan supplements. Given for great advances in exploration and scouting.

    Greater Comet +2
    4 Skill or initiative.

    Nice idea Dan!

    I agree, that the Noble would be +2 not +3, as we are talking about Federation Awards here and the Noble is, after all, most important on Earth.

    Now, does anyone have any good ideas for Klingon Awards, Commendations, etc. these might be usefull in my game in a short while, but I am no big expert on Klingon culture myself. Maybe one of you can do a better job than I could.

    Known Klingon Honoraries;

    The Order of the Bat'Leth
    Da'har Master (Depends on if the 'master' part is conferred or simply a job description, but I would go with it as a commendation, all others are Da'Har adepts...)
    Joining a House - sort of family promotion...

    Any others (and points values) from the Klingon experts out there???

    On the whole I see Klingon medals to be far more combat related. No purple stars or the like, the scars are their badges of honour, possibly honour blades or D'K'Tangs and chunky metal badges to attach to their armour...

    OK. From the Encyclopedia;

    Zee-Magnees Prize: Prestigeous scientific award

    Known (ie Canon) recipients

    Dr. Richard Daystrom, for invention of Duotronics in 2243
    Dr Ira Graves, for his work in Positronic Neural Networks

    Zee-Magnees Prize +3

    6 Skill Renown.

    Best guess.
