Thread: What the H-E-Double Matchsticks!!!

    Post What the H-E-Double Matchsticks!!!

Just sat through the Voyager episode "Dragons Teeth" and spotted this peice of dialogue (also watched the episode of the New Adventures of Superman with Bob Beltran in and noticed that he gets more to do as a villain in a 45 minute program than her does as the first officer in a seven year series but I digress).

"How far into the atmosphere do we need to get before we can go to warp"

Now then, I thought it was dangerous to go into warp inside a solar system so what kind of idiot would go into warp inside a planets atmosphere.

I don't remember the ST4 instance, was there anything with that that could explain it as an "emergency jump" or something? I always considered going to warp near a sufficient gravity well to be rather dangerous.... Then again TNG Ent-D did go to warp when that vortex was sucking them in, still I'd call that an emergency jump.

Wasn't the reason why you don't go to warp in the atmosphere because by doing so you basically drag a whole heck of the atmosphere with you into space?

I can't place where I heard that...may not be canon.

Perhaps Voyager was taking about the distance outside of the atmosphere that would do the least damage? Geez, now I'm making excuses for Voyager...when will the hurting stop?

I feel I should point out that "dangerous" is not the same as "impossible." Just a thought...

Although it happened regulary in TOS and even TNG now and then.

It wasn't till a DS9 ep where the changeling Bashir was going to destroy the Bajor system. That they made a big deal out of it.

In Voyager's case the new 'eco-friendly' warp drive might get around that to.

Yeah thats what he was going to blow it up with.

What I'm on about is when the Defiant went to warp in the Bajor system to stop the runabout before it blew the sun up.

And Kira made a big deal out of it but Dax said 'what choice do we have'.
