    DS9 Characters, Coda-fied

    Recently I decided to write up a bunch of the major characters from DS9 in the Coda RPG format. I've stuck to major characters that weren't covered in the Narrator's Guide, and made use of all the books (Aliens, Starships, Starfleet Operations, etc.), as wello as the BtFF webzine.

    In several cases, I also made use of a few House Rule Flaws, such as Code of Honor (inspired by LUGTrek), Loneliness, Non-Commissioned Officer (I do NOT agree with how non-coms get treated in the official rules!), and Medical Remedy (also inspired by LUGTrek). I will try to include the House Rules I used along with each character.

    I also allow characters to take more than two Flaws, total. I mean, c'mon. The Personal and Professional Development Flaws reflect the character's troubled background, but doesn't anyone accumulate Enemies, personality quirks, or reveal Dark Secrets later on in the series?

    The only thing I skipped altogether is Martial Arts Maneuvers. I may do revised versions of Sisko, Kira, Worf, and Quark, and then tack on a few more Advancements and Maneuvers to these characters.

    <b><i><u>New Flaw: Code of Honor</u></i></b>

    The character has a strict set of rules that they live and operate by. Examples include:
    <ul>
    <li><i><u>Federation Code of Honor</u>:</i> Help the helpless, never attack first, support the civil rights of all true sentients, respect interstellar law and treaty, keep an open mind to other cultures, spend your lives growing wiser and stronger. Note: Many Starfleet captains have both the Starfleet and Federation Codes of Honor; others have only the Federation Code of Honor (hence their occasional disregard for Starfleet's General Order One).

    <li><i><u>Ferengi Code of Honor</u>:</i> Make as much money as possible, never give it back (unless your life is at stake), seek profit in all circumstances, obey the Grand Nagus and your boss, trample on your employees and underlings as needed.

    <li><i><u>Klingon Warrior Code of Honor</u>:</i> Die in battle, never surrender, never take prisoners, eschew luxury, always seek challenges in life, obey worthy superiors, challenge unworthy superiors.

    <li><i><u>Starfleet Code of Honor</u>:</i> Explore the unknown, help the helpless, avoid interfering with primitive cultures (Prime Directive), obey Starfleet superiors (unless their orders place more lives in jeopardy than they would save), keep an open mind, always learn and grow stronger and wiser.</ul>

    A character must spend a point of Courage to disobey their Code of Honor. For two selections, a character who disobeys their Code of Honor earns half the normal experience points for that game session. For three selections, the character can never disobey their code of honor, period.

    <b><i><u>New Flaw: Non-Commissioned Officer</u></i></b>

    As an optional rule, allow Starfleet (and other para-military and military) Enlisted crew to take this Flaw, instead of constructing them as per the rules in the Players' Guide. Non-Coms are constructed just like Commissioned Officers, except for the presence of this Flaw. GMs may choose to disallow Non-Coms in certain Starship Elite Professions, such as Command and Counseling.

    The character is not a commissioned officer in their organization. This Flaw is the opposite of the Promotion Edge, and both cannot be taken for the same organization. Non-Com can be upgraded, reflecting a lower rank. For each Level of this Flaw, the character must choose one Skill that is ordinarily a Professional Skill for the character's chosen Profession; it becomes a non-Professional Skill.

    The points from this Flaw must be spent upgrading class Skills, and the character must have one Skill with a Specialization that reflects their primary area of training. Non-Coms are more specialized in their focus and duties than Commissioned officers.

    For Ezri, I used the simplified Trill symbiote rules in the Aliens book. After I get a chance to read the novel Lives of Dax, I may do a revised version.

    The character suffers from a chronic medical condition that can only be cured by medication or cybernetics (or other, external apparatus). If removed from the source of their medication, or their cybernetics malfunction (water, powerful EMP field, plot fiat energy field) the character suffers the full force of their condition. For one selection, the condition is mildly penalizing in combat (Nog's lameness without his biosynthetic leg, Ezri's spacesickness). For two Levels, the condition is severely penalizing, but not immediately lethal (Geordi's blindness). And for three Levels, the condition is completely incapacitating, or potentially immediately lethal (Picard's artificial heart).

    I was a little unclear as to Odo's actual rank in the Bajoran Militia; he seems to always wear the same combadge as Kira, and since that's the emblem of rank for the Bajorans, I guessed that he's the same formal rank, just a subordinate since she's the station executive officer.

    <b><i><u>Constable Odo</u></i></b>

    Found in the Denorios Belt of the Bajoran system during the Cardassian Occupation, Odo was analyzed on Terok Nor (later <i>Deep Space Nine</i>) by a Bajoran scientist who taught him to emulate humanoids (albeit imperfectly). Finding a strong sense of justice inside, Odo was called upon by the Cardassians to help maintain order among their captive workers.     The character will actively seek out anyone who can understand their plight, and empathize. The character suffers a penalty of -1 to all Savvy rolls against a Social Skill used on them by a friend, or by their "own kind" (Founders for Odo, Klingons for Worf during early TNG, Vulcans for Spock during early TOS, etc.). Further, the character incurs a penalty of -1 to all Social Skill tests made against anyone who is not a personal friend or one of their "own kind".

    The character is missing half of their visual-light-reception organs. The character suffers an additional -1 to all PER rolls related to sight, all PER-related Skill rolls related to sight, and an additional -1 penalty to hit whenever range penalties apply to ranged weapons.

    Obviously, this assumes that the character has not replaced the eye with a cybernetic prosthetic; if so, the Flaw the character should take instead is Medical Remedy (and, if the replacement stops functioning, the penalty is -2, not -1; the character is not used to operating without their prosthetic).

    Canon Example: Martok, general of the Klingon Imperial Defense Forces.

    Once the commander of the space station Terok Nor and the prefect of Bajor, Dukat came to loathe the Bajoran people under him, despite what Dukat claims were his attempts at a more moderate rulership. After the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor and Starfleet converted Terok Nor to Deep Space Nine, Dukat came into conflict with Starfleet Captain Benjamin Sisko and his first officer Kira Nerys many times over the years, although rarely in open combat.

    It was Dukat who negotiated Cardassia's alliance with the Dominion, but he suffered a mental breakdown when his trusted lieutenant Glinn Damar killed Dukat's half-Bajoran daughter Tora Ziyal when Starfleet came to re-take the station. Perhaps as a result of this psychic trauma, Dukat has come to believe he is the Emissary of the Pah-Wraiths, evil exiled enemies of the Prophets, whose Emissary is Benjamin Sisko ...
