    Cool Prime Directive 2nd Ed

Just ran across this interesting tid-bit on the SJ Games MIB mailing list, and figured it needed a mention here. I know we're mostly talking LUG-Trek on these boards, but this is the "all things Trekish (and pizza)" section...

    >July 3, 2001
    >FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    >
    >GURPS To Power New Prime Directive RPG
    >
    >Steve Jackson Games and Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc. announced an
    >agreement today that allows ADB to use the GURPS roleplaying system in
    >their new edition of Prime Directive, a roleplaying game set in the
    >Star Fleet Universe of ADB's Star Fleet Battles, Federation & Empire,
    >and other best-selling games.
    >
    >"This is the next step in our strategic plan to take the Star Fleet
    >Universe where it always should have been," ADB President Steve Cole
    >said. "Prime Directive, 2nd Edition is the linchpin of a comprehensive
    >line of gaming products set in our universe."
    >
    >The Star Fleet Universe is the science-fiction world of the original
    >Star Trek television series, up to but not including the first
    >theatrical movie. Building from that foundation, many years' worth of
    >original material has been added to the universe through the original
    >Prime Directive roleplaying game, as well as Star Fleet Battles and
    >Federation & Empire.
    >
    >The first release in the new Prime Directive, 2nd Edition line is
    >scheduled for late in the year. Gary Plana, a veteran of the 1st
    >edition of Prime Directive, is leading the 2nd Edition team. "We knew
    >we needed to upgrade the system as part of a new edition," Cole said,
    >"and GURPS was our first choice. It's the game that our staff and our
    >fans were begging us to use."
    >
    >"As an old Trekkie, I'm very happy that the new Star Fleet Universe
    >roleplaying game will be `powered by GURPS'," Steve Jackson said.
    >"Steve (Cole) is one of the good guys of the industry, and it's great
    >to be working with him."
    >
    >"Powered by GURPS" is a new label for roleplaying lines that use the
    >GURPS game system but are more than just GURPS supplements. Prime
    >Directive, 2nd Edition will be the first game published by a company
    >other than SJ Games to carry the "Powered by GURPS" logo. "But not the
    >last," Jackson said. The new Transhuman Space line, which kicks off
    >from SJ Games in late 2001, will also be "Powered by GURPS."
    >
    >"It is a particularly happy occasion that we could reach this deal with
    >Steve Jackson, an old personal friend," Cole said. "We've always wanted
    >to do products together, and combining the best RPG system with the
    >best sci-fi universe is, obviously, a natural."

Wow. Scooped 26 hours ago. Bugger. What's the point of having an inside source, when the ohter guy's inside source is a bit quicker? :-\ Seriously, though, sorry for the repeat announcement, folks.

This sounds interesting, no more unofficial GURPS modules for Trek now we have a real one.

The winnies at Paramount most be snapping the old pencils and yelling at the secreatary as that constant pain in the rump called SFB makes another jab at the side of Official Trekdom.

What is nice from point of view is that a new Prime Directive does not essentually mean compitition for the new Decipher Trek as lets face it most of us die hard people will buy both just to get a good guidline for conversions. The way I see this its a winwin for all of us.

And lose for Wizards of the Cost!

Actually, if I were Decipher (and I'm not) I doubt I'd be pleased. Actually I'm certain I wouldn't be. I'm paying a hefty sum of money to Paramount in licensing fees. Star Fleet Battles and Prime Directive don't have to do so. If even one person goes ahead and buys Prime Directive instead of my new game, I'm not happy.

And I'm sure there are gamers out there who will take such stance, especially given that the new PD game will be using GURPS.

Not that I'd behave any differently if I were Cole and company. It's good business sense on their end. Paramount was incredibly foolish back in the 70's for allowing their rights to the Star Fleet Technical manual to be fuzzy enough to allow for SFB and PD to come into play.

    Arrow

But yet Decipher won the battle that really counted last year. The won the right to publish in the mian stream universe (TNG) where most of the interest is in. While they know they may have lost that small group who would have bought the new RPG to convert into a Prime Directice RPG in the long run they know that a few 21 dollar sourcebooks instead of a full game will be of less compitition and they already have to compete with traveller on that score.

As some who plays both LUGTrek & SFB, I welcome this as a way for me to be able to easily convert SFB into LUGTrek. In fact I have already done some conversions for the Hydrans & Lyrans & with this I will be able to convert even more ideas from SFB to LUGTrek.

    GURPS. Heheh.

That made my day. I think S. John should be forced to write it.

    Thumbs up

I wonder if S John would want to write for PD, and if Steve Cole would consider the possibility.

    GURPS: Prime Directive.

    YES!!!

Since I'm now running a GURPS: Battlestar Galactica game I might use this...

    "I am Baltar of Borg..."

    Hmmmmm...

    ------------------
"This battlestation is now the ultimate power in...who's hailing us? I don't care who these 'Borg' are, THEY CAN WAIT!!!"

    Exclamation

And, just for the record, the troubles at SJ Games right now will have no effect on Prime Directive 2nd Ed. More details over in the general message area...

Care to share your stuff? I have been toying with doing a BG game, but I wasn't sure GURPS lent itself to fighter comabt.

E-mail me if you would like
