Thumbs up Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 09

For those of you who read the novels and such, the winner's list for 2006's SNW anthology was announced today. I'm thrilled to announce that one of my stories, "Home Soil," was selected to be published.

If you happen to pick up the book in July, I hope you enjoy it.

    Congratulations!

That's two stories. Doesn't that mean you have to write a Trek book now?

Trust me, I'm trying. Just a matter of finding the right pitch that catches the interest of the editors. No luck yet.

    Sweet action! Congrats, Ineti!

I'm determined to get some of my fiction published this year. Same thing I've said the last two years though. I spend too much time on roleplaying stuff, and my other writing suffers for it.

    Persistence. Persistence. Persistence.

Well, the article indicates that one of the other authors had 2 shorts in the previous SNW books, so is it if you are a winner twice but not a runner up or straight out published 3 times before you have to pitch a full book?

Congrats Ineti - way to prosper and start off the new year.

I had to do the opposite. Somewhere around November I realized that I was spending more time working on RPGs and doing community theater, and not doing enough time what I really wanted to do, which was write. I stopped working on theater and took a sabbatical from my gaming group, and haven't really missed either. And I'm writing and loving it.

I'll still play RPGs if my friends run something, but I don't have the time to plan and run something.

Actually, the short stories and novels are mutually exclusive. Getting into SNW doesn't get you anything except the money for the story, a few comp copies, and a professional writing credit. It does expose you to the Trek editors, who are generally willing to hear from someone 'in the fold' as it were. You're not required or obligated to pitch novels once you get into SNW.

However, several SNW winners have gone on to publish Star Trek novels, Star Trek short stories, and non-Trek books and such. SNW gets your foot in the door. It's up to the individual writer to either let that door close or kick it open.

I was more pointing out as I recall that there was a limit to the number of SNW stories you could have before becoming ineligible for the SNW contest as it is for beginning authors. To get to be able to write a Star Trek book, you have to be an established writer effectively as they toss a bunch of limitations on 1st time writers making it difficult to make your story stick out from all the rest. Therefor after meeting the limit of the number of short stories for the SNW, you or any other writer can only pitch full books as you become ineligible but established writer.

Not just full books. There is usually at least one short story anthology per year beyond the SNW book that can be pitched to. I recently pitched 10 short story ideas to the editor for the upcoming TOS 40th anniversary anthology, though he had to pass on the lot of them.
