"New" edge, development and advancement packages.

    Hey.

During my summer vacation at Lake Garda in Italy I spent some time creating characters for my campaign Star Trek: Atlantis. (The name was on my mind before the Stargate spin-off I might add!)

Having with me only my PG and my NG I came up with some new character creation and advancement ideas.

I didn't know then (and don't know right know) if anything similar to this has been posted here before or has been in an issue of "The Final Frontier".

As it has been quite a while since I looked through my old LUG Trek stuff, I'm not sure from which book I have borrowed the idea of the Command School Advancement Package (probably the Player's Guide though).

Anyway, here are my ideas from italy...

    Professional Development: Strategic Operations Officer

Professional Development - Starship Command Officer

    Strategic Operations Officer

You have recieved advanced training in tactics employed by Starfleet and the main adversaries of the Federation as well as in Starfleet Command protocols.
Your training has included tactical studies and analysis as well as hands-on experience.
You have been trained to see the ‘greater picture’ more than just the momentary state of things. It falls into your obligation to think ahead, analize and to suggest to your CO plans for a long term tactical approach.

    Skills:

    System Operations (Command / Tactical) + 2
    Tactics + 2
    Negotiate + 2
    Unarmed Combat + 2
Ranged Combat (Energy Weapons) + 2
    Administration + 1
    Computer Use (Hacking) + 2
    Repair + 1
Culture (chose one skill) + 1

Pick 5: + 1 to any Professional Skill

Pick 1 edge: Command, Iron Willed, Dodge, Bold, Promotion, Advanced Tactical Training Program [this new edge (discription see below) is a strongly suggested pick]

An example for this kind of officer would be Lt.Com.Worf (DS9)

New Edge: Advanced Tactical Traing Program

New Edge: Advanced Tactical Training Program

Prerequisiton: Character must be at least Lt.(j.g.) of rank and in Command Branch.

Sometimes an officers on the command track shows an aptitude for tactics.
For these officers Starfleet Command offers an Advanced Tactical Training Program (ATTP).
Officers attending the ATTP will specialize either in a certain field of tactics like
Tactics (Space) or Tactics (Ground) or become a specialist for the tactics employed by a given (threat-)species like Cardassians or the Dominion.

Game effect: Characters that chose the ATTP edge gain a + 3 bonus whenever they make a test in the area in which they specialized.

Upgrade: May be taken twice during one Advancement, than it includes Promotion I.

An example for the ATTP would be Lt. Ro Laren (TNG). She even was promoted after completion of the ATTP.

    New Advancement Package: Command School

    Character Advancement:
    Advancement Package: Command School (CS)

Sometimes officers that have started their careers in the Science, Operations or Medical branches of Starfleet begin to show promise to rise to a command position onboard a starship or space station. If sponsored by their CO, these officers can apply to Command School.
There they will be taught the basics of day-to-day starship or space station command protocols.

Game effects: This is not a requirement for Department Head status.
Nevertheless CS must be attended before a character not hailing from the command branch takes the “Command 2” edge and becomes an XO or CO.

    Skills:

    System Operations (Command Systems)
Administration (Starship or Space Station) + 1
    Negotiate + 2

    Inspired by LUGTrek's Player's Guide.

I like the Strategic Ops off but I would suggest moving the specialty in Computer Use (Hacking) +2 to Tactics (Specific Race or Federation) +2. Strategic Ops officers would have specific training in one or more races tactics as opposed to further computer training which the normal ops officer should have.

That's what I designed the new edge ATTP for. I thought, that a beginning SOO would be taught in basic tactical stuff and then would refine his skills at the training program. In my original handwritten script I actualy made the ATTP edge a mandatory one. I had dropped that because I couldn't think of the reason why I had intended it to be an obligatory pick. Now, you pointed that out to me. Thank you!

I guess that's what happens when you make something up and post it over three months later...

Nevertheless, I inteded the skill computer use to be helpful in designing, setting up and organising plans and operations. But you are probably right, that (hacking) isn't the best spec. for that task. I'll see into that.

I think mine was more broad. And it adds up to a full Advancement-worth of stuff...

Don't have it handy now, though...
