    CODA-based skirmish rules

Ok, I brought this up a long time ago, then got distracted first by life, then by other projects, but I wanted to come back to it. I have an interest in making a CODA-based skirmish system akin to the D&D/Star Wars Minis rules (though please don't take that comparison too far ). Anyway, my first question is what, if any, grid-system people like in their minis play?

Me? I prefer gridless play (I really enjoyed Chainmail, the precursor to the current d20 minis rules), but I can see the value in other systems.

Not the '70s precursor to D&D, but the 2002 minis game. Though I was around for the original too.

Okay, cool that I'm getting some polling, but does anyone actually care to comment on why they prefer their choice, or dislike the ones they didn't choose?

    Ferinstance...

Square grid: simpler, but limits movement choices
Hex grid: better movement, but terrain (buildings/streets) usually follow orthogonal paths which don't fit hexes very well
Freeform: total freedom of movement, but more complex due to a need for measurement, etc.

    Hexagonal

I prefer hexes because I am used to it from other game systems.

I prefer hexes as the game is setup with d6 in mind, very easy to randomize direction if need be.
