Did you know that Colonel Sanders held the actual rank of Colonel? It was honorary, but in fact bestowed upon Mr. Sanders by the Governor of Kentucky. This position is one of a commision from the Governor of the state of Kentucky.

Therefore it is an actual rank, that historically had military duties, but in its modern variant, is honorary, and ceremonial.

    I hope you enjoy!

I did know that, actually. I'm not sure where I first heard it, but I was reminded by an episode of a show on the History Channel on the history of food 9or something). One episode they did KFC, one Wendys, one Hershey's, one Chef Bouy-Ar-Dee. They generally get 2 folks per episode, but I cannot recall what it is called.
I also think TonyG knows, from the way he refers to it in what you quoted.

It came up yet again recently because Kentucky is putting up a statue of Col. Sanders, and PETA has issues with that.

Did you know that, not only is KFC the largest fast food chain in Japan, but Col Sanders is a very popular icon in Japan, and every KFC in Japan has a statue of him outside? They call him "Sanders-san" and dress the statues up for holidays.
You're a Starfleet Officer. "Weird" is part of the job.

LOL! "Col. Sanders arm all chickens! Set bisquits to kill"

I think the orignal duties of that honary title were probably soemthing along the lines of commanding milita troops. Still, I wouldn't want to be commanded by a "honorary" colonel (I certainly would not want to be operated on by a honorary doctor).

I beleive that I might have saw the same special on the History Channel, Ivaguely remeber Sanders getting an honorary rank, but can't recall much of the details. I think it was late in his lifetime.

I only mentioned Sanders to prove an point/make a joke. Mainly that we can't say for certain what "Col. West's" rank really comes from. Could be a Marine or Army rank , and IMO the case for needing a Federation Army is greater than the one for Federation Marines (especially if we go with the real orignal reasons for shipboard marines-ones whick predate the existience of, and do not reflect upon the US Marines), but it could just as easly be something else.

Hey, for all we know, he could be Don West and the Jupiter II finally made it back to Earth! (He was a major).

BTW,Kentucky Fried Chicken was once a much more successful fast food chain than it is today. Up until the early 70s or so, it was running neck and neck with McDonalds for the #1 spot in the business. Then it sort of dropped out of the running , several reasons, but the big two were probably price (at one time eating there would cost twice what it would cost at McD's-remember those old "change from a dollar" ads?), and a rethinking as to the foods merits (when 'fried" food went out of favor--the reason why they call it KFC instead of Kentucky Fried Chciken).

Halan Sanders sold the compnay long before it got really big, and was preety much hired as the company's symbol/spokesperson.

Okay JAU3, you made me hungry.

Yes, I do know about Sanders of KFC fame being a Kentucky Colonel as my grandfather (if I recall correctly) is one too.

The history channel special you are thinking is "American Eats" and "More American Eats" they were both really good. KFC was in the first one and its Dave Thomas of Wendsy who told that the rank was real but honory and that even he had earned it too (he had worked at KFC when he first started out and was a friend of the Colonel).

Too bad both have past from us now
