    Talking Pittsburghese web site

Planning a trip to pittsbugh, then you may wish to peruse this list of Pittsburghese to help you understand what the hell the locals are saying

A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

I am from Pittsburgh, and lived there for 20 years total, at different times. I don't miss it, the city has a lot of problems, but I can sure speak it.

I've submitted and had a few items on sites like that, at various times.

Lots of people not from there, think people from Pittsburgh who have not lost the accent, are from Philadelphia, or Brooklyn. (Especially if they are from Cali themselves, and have never travelled.)

People often told me "You sound funny, when you talk."

In a way, I think having so specific of an accent, helped me to learn a few others, or maybe I was just born with Linguist Advantage.

Oh yeah. The best Steak sandwiches in Pittsburgh are available, not too expensive at McCoy's at 21st on Carson Street in Southside. The same ladies there served the same food to me and my dad, when he was working as a welder in the 70's, and we lived 7 blocks away.

Get a Steak sandwich, hold the onions (the onions there are just not too tasty), and a Snyder's iced tea, then take the whole deal down to the Riverside park a few blocks away, or to Point park, near the fountain, even better, and watch the boats pass, winding it up with an incline ride to Mount Washington and a little bit with a camera on the overlook for the for the full experience of a half hour slice of life in Pittsburgh.

Every time I go back to the area, I eat there at McCoy's, sometimes twice a day.

One time, my wife and I drove to Pittsburgh, from Dayton, Just to get those sandwiches, turned around, and came back home. Total time elapsed, 9 hours, and well worth the trip.
