The war would be an important part of the campaign, with it being heavily combat oriented, at least during the DW period. Going from system to system starting from the point during last year, when it seemed like all was lost, when the Breen attacked Earth. If anything I would like to start from there. Of course due to discent from the Cardassians, the tide of the war quickly changed, however, from my impresssion the Alliance appeared to be at the breaking point, having lost many important sectors, and fighting reaching the core of the Federation, a buffer to the Romulans and the Klingons who were on the opposite side of the quadrant from the CU.
What I was thinking was that from wherever the players are from whether newly minted Starfleeters, called up reserves, or old salts from the days when Exploration was it, they would find themselves in the path of the Breen.
Or maybe even, start the background of the group formulating just as when the Second Battle of Chin'toka begins, thus what appears to be a second offensive, and possible final push into the core systems of the Federation.
As for the roles of the players. I do not see them as the primary characters of the War. DS9 clearly indicated that those roles were left for the crew of DS9, Martock, and Ross. If anything they are one of the important, but usually unsung heroes of the war. Sure the great tactitians are celebrated, but is the many soldiers, sailors, airmen, etc. who do the fighting. And these players are just that type, the fighters who spill the blood for the plans of those above them.
I was thinking that they are either strait "leg" ground forces, or a cavalry force of pilots and
ground forces. They wouldn't be independent and would be left at the mercy of the fleet, save the "puddle jumpers" and support attack fighters that they have at hand. Sure they can get around a planet faster than any force in the modern days. But when it comes down to it, boots on the ground, and holding the important points on a planet is where it all comes down to. Maybe they get a size 5 frigate that they may call home, kind of like how Rico's Roughnecks had the
Rodger Young, but that is always a temporary home.
To many Fleeters being assigned to such a force would be below them, being stuck planetside, especially when before they were free to move amoungst the stars. But pilots are short, and experience is even shorter...
I was thinking that although they maybe part of a larger element, at most they have a
company/troop (about 120-160 persons), so officer slots if they all want to be officers are Six (Co, Xo, PLs (Platoon Leaders)) at most. And each will be independent enough to do their own thing, but not large enough to hold their own against determined offense/defense.
OK, so the Cavalry idea would probably be the best.
