Remember, "civilians" advance about half as fast as Starfleet/military officers. So, 8 advancements reflect about 16 years experience in the profession.

Someone mentioned something about Command. Honestly, the only characters that I would require have Command 1 would be the ship's master, first officer and chief engineer. Only a commodore in the merchant marine should have Command 2.

The merchant marine organization is much "flatter" than Starfleet's, with less formality between the ranks, and even officers and enlists. They're all professionals, and treat each other with more equality than would a Starfleet crew (where the rank structure is more stratified).

OK, that frees up a couple of picks, but what about the promotion edge; I still need to get to Lt. level (promotion 2) or should I not really worry about it?

Yes, if you want to be a lieutenant equivalent, you will need to take promotion 2.

Former Starfleet Lieutenant, starting out as some sort of passenger, sounds god to me.

Just a thought that occurred to me earlier today. My char has a background as a Starfleet officer, which I assume will be commanded back to active duty as soon he is within communication range of the federation if it is during the Dominion war. What would that mean for the ship, being under SFC and having an officer on board during a quite desperate time for the Federation?

Out of curiosity. Does the ship have holodecks? My own suggestion. One, but it lacks the computer power to run Holo-novels.

Character creation... done with the 80% that takes 20% of the time...

I hope you all don't mind me sticking my nose in, but the question was something I was thinking about as I read your backgrounds.

I found this and thought it was good reading:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...erchant_Marine
I thought this line was interesting, "Graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are commissioned into the USNR by default if they do not choose to be commissioned in another service of the armed forces. A special badge, known as the Naval Reserve Merchant Marine Badge, has existed since the early 1940s to recognize such Merchant Marine personnel who are called to active duty in the Navy."

Was bored and love doing research and reading, so without further ado I am outta here. Good gaming!!

    Cool.

Since this is a time of war, the officers on the ship are given "provisional officer" status by Starfleet. So, if the ship eventually hires your characte, the master would be authorized to give him his commission back, pending reestablishing contact with Starfleet Command.

I would probably say this ship has one civilian-model holosuite. It's a bit smaller than a standard holodeck, but has enough computing power to do everything the crewmembers want. The crew is probably on a five-day rotational basis for use, limiting each person to a four-hour block of time based on watch schedule and first-come-first-serve signups.

Excellent on character creation (at least you've started). I have to put together the important NPCs, like the ship's master and communications officer. Minor stuff.

Sorry for the delay in my character creation, but the recent news about a reunion tour of my all time favorite band Genesis (see this: http://www.genesis-music.com ) had me a little preoccupied the last days (ok, let's be honest: full time!) and under pressure. I simply had to make sure that I get seats for my girlfriend and me

Genesis back on tour is something I have wished for for a very long time.

Yeah, I know it sounds lame and they do it probably just for the money, but I have wanted to see this band live on stage for 15 years and now finally it might / will happen.

I plan to have Valak's stats and background info mostly ready by the week-end and will mail / post / share it as needed.

Right now, I'm a very happy gamer and music fan

My PC's species write-up is almost complete, I am in the process of editing the flavour text and correcting some shaky english sentences here and there. I'll probably be able to post the full version this week-end.
In the meantime, here's a short summary:

The Shaltszs will be a curious, hyper-active species, whose members love to wander and experiment new things, to the point that they have much trouble focusing on the same subject for a lengthy period of time: they always have to jump from one subject to another (being in their conversation or their tasks).
A nomadic species at heart, they don't like to stay in the same place for too long, and have a very dimmed notion of personal possession, being used to discard whatever they don't need anymore for others to use.
They have no exceptional abilities, except a few unusual quirks: hailing from a planet with a 12-hours long day, they tire twice as fast as other species, but need half the usual time to rest; and they are used to much brigther light sources than most humanoids.

While i plug away at my Antican, the news about our 'holo-shed' (futurama fans will get it) reminds me of one of the side ideas about my initial ideas for a hobby for my character: Holographic hunting.

Takeing cues from the Hirogen and elements of our own culture, I imagined species that enjoyed hunting would quickly take to holo-hunts, if nothing more that a good way to keep the skills up. As new worlds (and thier new lifeforms) were discovered, sensor logs were quickly turned over to holoprogramers to recreate the worlds for the growing holo-hunt fad.

Taking this a step further, as the technology improved, and as the general capabilities of FED science increased, it became possible to recreate extinct species for the hunt. I even took it to the extreme where simulations of possible species were created...maybe even mythological creatures rendered as prey for hunting parties.

I had this whole idea about not just the hunters being in on this hobby, but science officers from xenobiology, xenopalentology and maybe even archeologists, as well as engineers/holographers getting into the act.

Just a thought. (and, since he already hunts, I wouldnt really need a new skill selection... )

LOL . . . your group crosses into the world throught the arch . . . ready for battle . . . their sences attempting to gather everything around them. Rough outlines of evergreen trees are scene through the darkness . . . with only the small area around your candle can be scene . . . then all of a sudden a strong gust of wind blew down from above, sending thin leaves towards your group like bullets . . . then all of a sudden the world begins to twirl around you . . . and omenous battle music begins to play . . .

Behind your group in a newly created battle field void of the terrain, encompassing only your group and the lone opponent flys a dragon keeping almost perfect station keeping. You turn around just to see a flame originate from its mouth, as it bask your group in heat and fire . . . above one of your allies a large red number appears above her head, and she falls . . . and above another, and another . . . each unprotected by their untreated cloth armor. However, you look up above yourself, and you see that somehow you moved a yard to your left and the word MISS appears.

Now who can guess the reference?

Oh . . . and if you haven't notice . . . there are other reservist aboard as well.

Ok, I finally decided to run my notes through the Character Builder 3.5:

It's pretty close to what I had, I still have to tweek it (change an edge to Skill Focus: Hunting, figure out why Unarmed Combat become 8, with 2 other Unarmed Combat 2's, etc), but at least I have a rough draft.

I'll get it off to the boss soon. How do you want it, anyway?

Send it as an email to:

    rolok_dargarian@yahoo.com

Please use the subject "TrekRPG Forum Game."

If possible, attach the character sheet as a .doc; however, as long as every section is clear (IOW, I can find your edges, skill ranks and total bonus, etc.), any format should be fine.

Everyone, please include in your emails a list of how you spent your advancement picks.

James, PM me or email me with a skill set you want to focus on (you can use ICON skill terms and I'll extrapolate it from there), and any edges/drawbacks you want your character to have.

I just emailed to you my species writeup. I'm really sorry for the delay, the writeup was almost complete last week, but I had to proofread it since it wasn't written in very good english, and last week was very busy (and me very tired).
