Well, NPS and Fort Ord are two separate locations. The former home of the 7th Light Infantry has been closed for seven years or so, and now houses California State University, Monterey Bay (affectionately known as C-SCUM), as well as military housing and a Defense Manpower Data Center, and has been split up between the communities of Seaside and Marina.

NPS is on the grounds of the former Hotel Del Monte (an historic landmark), near downtown Monterey and about 4-5 miles from Fort Ord (now called Ord Military Community). The school moved to its current location (from Annapolis) in 1951 and began classes in 1952.

I thought you were going to school at that CSU on the former Ft. Ord grounds . . . believe it or not I knew that the Naval Postgraduate School and Fort Ord were seperate facilites. However, what I don't know are the distances between NPS and the Monterey Presideo where the Defense Language Institute is located. I always wanted to be posted there.

Oh and did you know that 7th ID has been reestablished as a National Guard MACOM and is now at Fort Carson, CO.

You know it was sad to see all of the nicest West Coast Army Post close down . . . now we're stuck with Fort Irwin, and Fort Lewis . . . oh and the downsized Sierra Army Depot.

Actually my brother did a two week active duty stint at Fort Hunter Liggett a couple months back, he's part of a Civil Affairs unit down here in San Diego. And I actually enjoy spending time down there . . . myself.

What I don't understand is why is it that no one sees Monterey as a viable capital for anything. I mean it did a decent job during the spanish era, I mean it's centrally located on the coast . . . has a decent harbor, and is surrounded by bountiful farmland.

C5, the Shaltz look good overall, but I'm a bit concerned about the race's balance with only 8 picks of attribute adjustments and abilities. Perhaps a +1 Intellect or an additional +1 Agility would be in order. Everything else looks very good.

I am sorry about that . . . I just never invested into the CODA system . . . but maybe my character sheet will provide a good starting point. The history is there, just not a novalized version of it.

Thanks for your return. I thought I gave them 10 picks, but I hadn't my books at hand when I did the estimation. I'll see what I can change and mail you an updated version ASAP. I'm thinking maybe adding a couple of edges, since I was OK with the attribute adjustments as they were (if that's ok with you).
However, I'll be rather busy until the end of the week, so I'm not sure you'll have it before XMas

I'm working on the captain at the moment: Master James Alan Flaherty.

He's a third-generation merchant mariner and the 42-year-old great-grandson of the former Jamie Finney. Born in 2331 to Benjamin A. Flaherty (currently a commodore, commanding a fleet that runs along the Klingon border) and the former Eileen Komack, James entered the Merchant Marine Academy in 2349, graduating with honors in 2353. He achieved the rank of master in 2371, taking command of the PC ship that year.

Flaherty married the former Francoise Bonnet in 2356; they have two children. James, Jr., was born in 2359 and aspires to follow in the family's footsteps; Isabelle Marie was born in 2361 and is studying agricultural engineering in the family home outside St. Etienne.

Well we can name her Clipper Eclipse, after a Pan Am aircraft piloted by Gene Roddenberry, which crashed in Syria in 1947

We can name her Pacific Clipper, after the Boing 314, which circumnavigated the globe to return to safety in 1942.

We can name her William P. Frye, after the first US Merchant Marine vessel lost during World War I.

We can name her Mayaguez after the last US Merchant Marine Vessel to be involved in active conflict during the Vietnam War.

We can name her City of Rayville after the first US Merchant Marine Vessel lost during World War II.

We can name her Joseph Holt after the first US Merchant Marine Vessel to earn a US Navy Battle Star during the Pacific Campaign of World War II.

We can name her Ora Ellis after the last last Liberty Ship.

We can name her Mattson after John A Mattson who was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for resupplying the beleagered forces on Bataan.

Side notes:

For the record, I suscribe to the belief that Starfleet does not exactly mirror the United States Navy. There are similarities of naval tradition, but Starfleet is a much different entity and current Navy organization should not be used as a bible for its Starfleet counterpart.

That said, the Federation Merchant Marine is not exactly like the U.S. Maritime Service. The ties to Starfleet are looser than in the real world, and, despite the fact that the FMM falls under Starfleet jurisdiction in wartime, its ships operate more independently of the military than modern USNS vessels.

Also, there are no Starfleet Marines in MSTU*, the Akira is not a fighter carrier, and fighters do not exist in the modern sense of the word (I consider Peregrines escorts with a fanciful name, rather than a true "fighter").

Ah a subscriber of the big vessel combat model. Although it has its place, and "fighters" are vunerable mobile torpedo firing craft, I believe my views on the subject are very well known. However, we are playing in your world. So we shall live in it.

And yes, fighters, in the modern sense don't exist as all small craft in Star Trek. Instead small craft which are armed for combat, target capital ships, and fixed targets as well as other small craft. Therefore, they would be more like F/Bs then anything.
That has me wondering. If memory serves me, there have been no Bomber catagarized aircraft operated by the USN.

Nope, we have fighters, fighter/attack, attack, patrol and antisubmarine aircraft. F/A and A types are used for our strike missions.
