Layout Artist Needed

If you've gotten the latest issue of the Beyond the Final Frontier, you know that our layout artist has needed to take an indefinite break. So that means to continue putting out the e-zine I need to enlist the services of a new volunteer. Please let me know if you are interested.

I was thinking about this at 3 a.m. while staring at the ceiling.

What software is required, and what is a ball-park estimate of the cost of same?

There are open source alternatives, like Scribus, but I have no idea how they compare to commercial products, especially with regard to output quality and file size.
It would be good to know, what program(s) Dave Pipegras has been using, and if he might provide layout templates and stuff that would make the first steps of his successor much easier.

I'm reasonably sure that Adobe Acrobat is the software of choice, but I know nada about the suite itself.

And yes, templates and the like would be a god-send to the successor(s).

Of course, I wanna know where they get the marvelous artwork!
