    Commendations

Sorry about all these questions but I'm still learning these rules.

Under Commendations it says that there may be a Renown Award for the Commendation. But it never tells you how much Renown you get.

Do I assume its how many points (1-3) you spend on the Commendation?
If Matt Damon is going to be Captain Kirk, does that mean Ben Affleck is gonna be Mr. Spock?

Depends on if it is character generation or in actual play.

In actual in-game play the renown awarded for the scenario determines the potential commendation, or award given.

The Player's Handbook (black and white stripes cover) has a basic system for same, with medals listed, perhaps 10 to 12 of them. It's been a while since I looked at it.

    See
    http://www.geocities.com/renegadegamer/SFAwards.html
for a system designed by a member of these forums, based on that system in the player's handbook.

If you are still in character generation, Taking the Commendation advantage gives you the commendation. You can get renown associated at the Narrator's option, typically at a rate of 2 renown per 1 dev point spent on the commendation, since commendations, per se, have no game effect, other than AS renown.

There are no rules to say, Grankite order of tactics = whatever game effect. Thus the renown associated with the award IS the game effect.

The above link has a thorouglhy researched and planned list (note that those awards in the link are different from those suggested in the Player's handbook, and vary from Trek Canon in some ways.)

But, In general, 2 points of renown are worth 1 Development point, in the LUG system.

So if you buy up Commendation +2 in LUG (costing 2 development points in character generation, you get 4 renown for the PC (In areas depending on the specific award.)

If it's for staying at your post under fire it's discipline, if it is for a technical repair in record time, it's skill, if it is saving someone's life, risking your own, it's openness, etc.

The rules cover all of that pretty clearly.

Getting commendations in actual play cost more, just because points during PC gen are limited, and if you want to actually rob from points better associated to skills in chargen to be famous, it can happen.

Otherwise you got to do some major heroics during game sessions to be awarded a medal. Many of them are awarded posthumously, or might as well be posthumously. In my own game series, leaping on a grenade to save others ( or similar) more or less deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor.

Only one pc of perhaps 40 total, in 9-odd years of play has gotten one, and died doing it. Some have the starfleet cross, many have medals for gallantry, or lesser commendations.

It's a loose system, subject to a lot of judgement calls. That's why the above linked page was designed, over a period of months, when players were not satisfied with the Next Gen / TOS Era rules regarding renown, and wanted medals, and more than a "Good job, troops" from the Admiral of the task force.

Of course, most groups won't go to that level of detail, but some will, and that's the target audience for that link page.

My own crew has the following two examples:

    Commanding Officer: Commodore Sheridan
(Played for real time years, as a FASA Captain, converted to LUG, this year.)

    Starfleet Cross
Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry w. Clusters
    Grankite Order of Excellence
    Federation Medallion
    Gold Palm
    Federation Service Medal
    Purple Heart
Palm Leaf of K'mog Diplomatic Award
    Karagite Order of Heroism Award
    Starfleet Unit Citation
    Triangle Expeditionary Service Medal
    Romulan Service Medal
    Federation Exploration Service Ribbon
    Starfleet Commendation

First Officer / Helmsman: Commander Sieberling
(New Campaign PC, generated using LUG high level officer rules)

    Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry
    Starfleet Achievement Award
    Triangle Expeditionary Service Medal
    Klingon Service Medal
