Happy New Year, once it gets here, that is.

    Great link.

I had known (practically all my life) that "Auld Langs Syne" meant "Old Times Sake", though apparently not literally - "Old Long Ago" trasnslating best as "The Good Old Days" I'm told.
The local paper just ran an article (with the complete lyrics) that repeated the (apparently mistaken) attributation to Burns as author, saying it was first published after his death and has, somewhat inexplicably, become THE thing to sing at midnight on New Year's in every nation where English is spoken.

    I blame Laurence Welk.

As long as you are with friends and or loved ones, that is what matters when you sing the song. But if one can sing it correctly, more power to them, and a better time had by all.

Let us all remember those who have passed and can't be with us, and those who remain here on Earth and who are far away. May they have a happy and prosperous new year as well.

never been able to sing that old ditty...So I offer this alternative

IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO BEER
    (Traditional)

    Recorded by :
Brave Combo; Dr. Demento; The Dubliners; The Pogues.

In Heaven there is no beer
That's why we drink it here
And when we're all gone from here
Our friends will be drinking all the beer.

In Heaven there is no wine
So we drink till we feel fine
And when we leave this all behind
Our friends will be drinking all the wine.

In Heaven there is no fear
So we worry too much here
And we drink ourselves full of beer
To help us when we deal with the fear.

In Heaven there are no drugs
That's why we hang with thugs
And when the Lord pulls the plug
All the thugs will still be selling drugs, yeah.

    Thugs and drugs
    Beer...

In Heaven there is no sex
    So let's do that next
And when our muscles no longer flex
Someone else will be having sex.

In Heaven there are no wars
    Or cars, or movie stars
And when we no longer are
The world will probably still be having wars.

    What the heck! Yeah!

    Sex and war,
    Bars and cars.
    Drugs, thugs,
    And delicious food.
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.
