Thread: Character creation questions

    Post Character creation questions

My first character creation question: say that an overlay says that the character gets, for example, Social Sciences (Sociology and Anthropology) 2(3) and (2). Can anyone explain this in laymen's terms? My first thought that is that it really means, in this case, Social Sciences (Sociology) 2(3) and Social Sciences (Anthropology) 2(2).
I wasn't sure though... does the (2) make it Social Sciences (Anthropology) 0(2). But that doesn't make sense since, 0-skills can't have specializations over 1, if I read the ruling correctly.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

As for my second question, I forgot what it was, but I will post again later when I remember what it is.

No, Caretaker, you were right the first time.

If an Overlay gives you (for example) Social Sciences (Sociology and Anthropology) 2(3)(2), then the character has Social Sciences (Sociology) 2(3) AND Social Sciences (Anthropology) 2(2).

However, that would be a pretty silly Overlay, as any new specialisation is automatically 1 level higher than the base skill - so that the character would get Social Sciences (Anthropology) 2(3)...

Your first thought is the correct one, bud.

Your base skill of Social Sciences is 2.
Your specialization in Sociology is 3.
Your specialization in Anthropology is 2.

So you end up with Social Sciences (Sociology)2(3) (Anthropology)(2)

Yeah, thanks. I thought I might be right, but I wanted to double check. I prefer to be as accurate as possible with my characters.

As for the numbers I chose, I randomly picked them out because I couldn't remember the exact situation.

Here is a question I have:
What if your packages end up giving you one of your total edges that is +3? It says in the book that edges range up to +/-2.

Should you just pick another edge and shift points?

Technically, you lose the bonus point to the Edge, since it's already maxed out.

However, I think that just about any Narrator would let you shift that Edge point if you asked.

Alternatively, you can take the 1 DP that was earmarked for the Edge and use it to improve an existing specialisation (or purchase a new one...)

You simply spend the point for something else.
Its the same as when you take a package improving an edge and already have made four edgechanges, which is the maximum during character generation, at least if you follow the core rule book; it states that you may spend the edge-point somewhere else.

    btw
A package giving you a skill with two specs at 2(3)(2) is not that silly at all. specialisations are just that, special abilities in a certain field. To quote the corerules again: anybody with the ShipboardSystems skill may use the transporters, but only a specialist can cope with the difficulties of ion storm interference, crystaline magnesite layers or what ever the universe/your narrator comes up with.

    Exclamation

Doh! I hate correcting myself, but, as pointed out by others, page 74 of the Core Rule Book clearly states that if any Template, Overlay or Background package exceeds your number of changes to Edges (4), you get to put the point somewhere else.

While it doesn't specifically speak to when an Edge is maxed out (as opposed to 4 changes), it's definately a logical assumption that the same rule applies.

Short answer: put the 1 DP somewhere else.
