    Smile USS-Chicago NCC-1720

the crew manifest of notable NPCS from my current campaign. The ship is from the second run of Constituion class ships

    U.S.S. Chicago NCC-1720
    "Sweet Home Chicago"

    Captain David J Carlbom: Terran
CMDR Carla Johannson: XO, Tactical & A&A officer, Terran
Lt CMDR Shren Dunnaly: 3IC & Chief Navigator, Martian
Lt CMDR Mattew Stengovich: Chief Enginner, Centarui-Martian
    CMDR Thelin: CMO, Andorian
LT SG Najala Patel: HRN, Human
Major Valsey Sergetov: Security Chief, Terran
LT SG Ali Hussien: Transporter Chief, Terran
    Ensign Xain Li: Captian's Yeoman
Master Chief Petty Officer Harold Harrison: Deck Chief and Crew Master of Discipline, Terran
Petty Officer Wilma Cranston: Shuttle Crew Chief, Centauri-Human
Petty Officer Arnold Skolnik: Ship's Master Electrician

    Conventional Wisdom:
CPT Carlbom: Scuttlebutt says he's a Kzinshai Ground Forces veteran. Nasty situation that, so who knowns what baggage he's carrying? On the other hand, he seems to have a sense of humor and seems to be genuinely caring about the crew. The only real complaint we have is he tend to do unannounced drop in's in the labs to see whats going on.

CMDR Johannson: You know the old joke about Ice Queens. She fits it to a tee. Arrogant and demanding. Problem is that she's got the skills to be arrogant. That being said, she tends to expect a level of competence from her people and leaves you to your work and assumes that if you say that you need help, you mean it and will go out of her way to see that you get it.

LT CMDR Dunnaly: Heard she's from Valley Marinaris and grew up rough, so she's a bit on the hard-bitten side, but she's a good navigator and has served with the Captain since her cadet cruise. The Captain is trying to push her into the Commanders Chair, for eventual promotion.

Lt CMDR Stengovich: The humans say he's 'Polish' or something and seems to have some form of tribal argument with the Security Chief. Be that as it may, he helped design the upgrades to the warp engines and seems to take critique fairly well, one could say fatalistically, but apparently most 'Poles' tend to be like this.

CMDR Thelin: A Starfleet Liaison with the Interspecies Medical Exchange for several years, he seems to have a fair handle on various forms of Xeno-medicine and nano-medicine. A bit scatter-brained at times, but otherwise competent.

LT SG Patel: Working on her Doctorate on Compartitive Xenobiology, (something on the preserver Thesis from what I've heard), she's from the Indian subcontinent. And apparently wanted out of there as fast as possible. Something about an arranged marriage. That being said she's easy on the eyes and is a 'up' sort of person.

Major Sergetov: Okay, this guy officially creeps most of the crew out. Apparently he's a Ground Force veteran like the captain and has seen action verses the Klingons and the Kzinti. Something about his eyes. The Psyche's says he's okay, if a bit intense, but in his job that's a plus, I'd think. But his eyes. It's like he's sizing you up for a coffin.

Lt SG Hussien: Pretty good sort al around. He tend to be a bit self-conscious at his job. Don't blame him tho, particularly the nasty reputation transporters have gotten. He seems to know what he's going, but yer not getting me in one of those things….

Ensign Li: Overworked, underpaid, overstressed, underappreciated. Pretty much your standard yeoman. Seems to have her hooks into the ship's pulse though. Tends to know things before anyone else. Including those things you'd really rather she not know.

MCPO Harrison: He could get to higher rank, but apparently isn't in the mood to play political games and knows half the damned Admiralty. He runs a tight Below Decks and takes guff from no one. Do your job and he'll back you up. Screw up…and Hell will come forth upon you.

PO Cranston: You must understand, They are HER shuttles. She is the chief in charge of their repair and care. She understands occasionally that they will get beaten up, but you screw one up when screwing around…she needs more maintenance crew….

PO Skolnik: Colorful sort who got on the bad side on an Admiral back when he was a CPO and called the Admiral 'ignorant'. That being said, he knows every system aboard the 'Chicago'. Even more than the CE, which probably annoys the CE to no end. Has a habit of speaking before he thinks too. But it's no worse than dealing with a grumpy Tellarite.
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.

I'd say a human can hail from any planet of this galaxy while a terran comes from the planet Earth, the craddle of humanity itself...

Um, "Master of Discipline?" What the heck is that? Not a very Federation title. Traditionally, enlisted crew discipline is the responsibility of the senior enlisted crewmember (a MCPO wopuld definitely qualify), who is usually accorded the ancient title of "Bosun". "Master of Discipline" sounds more like a TOS Klingon or Mirror Universe title.

Fiddly bits: a full Lieutenant is usually just referred to as a Lieutenant - "Senior Grade" isn't part of the rank title in Western-style navies, including Starfleet. Also I assume HRN stands for "Head Registered Nurse" - the title is usually just "Head Nurse" and you would of course need to be an RN to hold the position.

As for Major Sergetov, why the ground forces rank? True, ST VI: TUC does establish that up until that point in time, Starfleet ground forces did use Army-style ranks (presumably a holdover from their MACO predecessors), but it's also firmly established in TOS and TMS that Security use Naval-style Starfleet ranks (LCdr Giotto and LCdr Chekov).

Yehh, but people seem to move around enough that those things aren't really clear-cut...
