    Modified Durance Class Smuggler

This is a ship that i'm planning on using for a smuggler/adventurer campaign in the future. It's my first attempt at putting together a starship, so i'm not sure if i've done it right.

And I know it's a bit peculiar to use such an old ship class, but I just really like the style of it.

    HISTORY:

Orion’s Fortune, or ‘The Bucket’ as called by her crew, is an interesting ship, over 200 years old, but still in a workable and serviceable condition. She began life as the Durance class U.S.S. Chandeleur, in 2132 as an Starfleet cargo ship, but four years into her career, both ship and crew disappeared, not to resurface again until 2237, orbiting a gas giant, in near perfect condition, with the crew missing.

She was placed in dry-dock for a while, but disappeared once again on the way to Mars, and then didn’t resurface for another 10 years, only to wind up in the service of a Tellarite mining concern. Tellarite engineers had refitted her, improving the hull integrity, adding shields, replacing the engines, and upgrading the weapons systems. She remained with the Tellarite Miners for the next seventy years, undergoing two more refits (at the 20 and 50 years marks), only to wind up in a junk yard controlled by the Zakdorn.

It remained there, in storage, until being purchased by adventurer and smuggler Ace Quinn, who was intrigued by the ships charm, and purchased her, putting her to work doing regular runs between Orion and Tellar. It was Quinn who gave the ship her current name.

He has upgraded the ship a few times too, most notably to the sensors and shields, although numerous other improvements have been made, such as replacing the antiquated phasers with a set of Cardassian disruptors, and replacing the shield grid with a new one.

There are also hidden compartments on each deck for more sensitive cargo, a sensor mask (for fooling the authorities with enough time to escape), as well as two outdated shuttles.

And the Orion as she looks circa 2368:

    Do you think it 'works'?

Looks good. Without going through the numbers it sounds about right, the only anomaly I noticed is the reliability of the impulse and warp engines are both the same (the lower of the two I believe) for the rules, so you may just want to install cheaper impulse engines to claw back some points Also the sensor mask, it should be on your traits and such (I've heard of that one, but I can't remember where now hahaha)

Nothing wrong with using an older ship, many ships are designed for a life-cycle of hundreds of years, regardless of if they make it that long! With extensive refits, it's plausible The back story is intreaguing, that should give you some plot hooks for your adventures.. who knows what hidden past lies in an, as yet, undiscovered compartment.

Reminds me of a hidden compartment I put inside an old smuggler ship, the players had. It drove the crew batty trying to work out what it was, not least because it had control of the ships systems, and it beamed them into the brig, if they tried to cut through he bulkhead (regardless of if that system was online muhahahah).

Thanks for the input! I liked this little ship as soon as i'd seen it, and I thought 'that would be a great smuggler ship'.

And talking of hidden history, there is a mysterious, unmarked button on the helm controls that previous crews have been too scared to press! (still working out what that might be, but it needs to be interesting!)

Well the only problem with the (to quote Ren and Stimpy) 'Beauuuuuuuutiful Beeeeeeeeeeg Reeeeeed Shineeeeeeey Buooooooooouuuutton' - the players will either completely disregard it or press it within the first 5 seconds LOL Hide the button, and only employ it when it's convenient, and or evil

Yeah the pic is pretty cool, gives a good impression of the ship: a banged up crate, that won't take too many licks, if it gets in a firefight hehe

I think that the button might not be recieving any power at first, so they'll need to fix it, but it will definately be interesting to see what happens once I've decided what the button actually does

And with regards to the pic, it would have looked silly having a 200 year old ship without a scratch, plus the current captain refuses to replace the hull plates (something about 'battle honours', he says )

LOL, if it was my lot, within 18 minutes, they'd have powered up the mysterious button, knocked off the captain, and probably blown up half the universe, pressing it

Well, my players have always tried to knock off their captain at first opportunity, even on starfleet ships! But hopefully, this one won't get targeted (he's too funny to die - think Han Solo and Jack Sparrow in one body).

And, touchwood, this ship WON'T be destroying the universe anytime soon
