    Unhappy Farewell to FASA

FASA is closing its doors after 20 years.
    http://www.fasa.com/PressReleases/PRClose.html

I for one am saddened to hear this. I have played many, many FASA games over the years:
Behind Enemy Lines, Star Trek, Dr Who, Battletech, Shadowrun & Earthdawn. I could not even begin to add up the hours spent playing their games and reading their novels.

    They will be missed.

A couple of years ago I heard that Decipher, Inc. went out and bought out FASA, in toto.

    Any truth to this?

This is a list of the systems I´ve been playing and the enterprises producing it.

    Last Unicorn Games: gone
    Fasa + Shadowrun: gone
    Dragonlance: gone
Wizards of the Coast: still there.

    Mmh...

I bet you 20 to 1 that WOC won´t be there anymore at the end of the year.

Wizards of the Coast is owned by Hasbro, so I doubt they are going anywhere. At least I hope not...

Haven't there been rumors that Hasbro is having trouble? I seem to remember reading something like that a month or two ago.

Yeah, and the reason why is a huge reason why most game companies aren't publically owned.

Hasbro, basically, got battered with all the rest in the stock market, and got seriously clobbered by a downturn in sales of Pokemon, which last I checked accounts for a LARGE portion of the income of the WotC unit. Hasbro was never the most financially stable of companies lately, and I've heard rumors from the company considering filing for chapter 11 to much worse for the last 3 months.

Whoever is in charge of the WotC's trading card game division have put too much stock on Pokemon trend.

I can only hope they can rally with the release of the Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time RPG. There seem to be a cult following to this contemporary fantasy literature.

As for Hasbro, they'll have to find a new trend to profit on. I suggest Harry Potter (which is pushing out the Pokemon trend in the US, IMHO) or get a toy license for the Lord of the Ring.

Think about what would happen to the game industry if Hasbro does go bankrupt or worse....
