We were planning to do a short series where the players would be on a planet surface. Jewel came up with the idea of a science stations and Dave and I decided on the latest version seen in the latest comic book from IDW publishing Star Trek the Next Generation “Intelligence Gathering.” This is a generic version of the station.

Station Data: Designed by the Daystrom Science Institute the Stations is a surface mounted installation located on hundreds of planets. Many variations of the station have been created, Computer research, medical science, to Terraforming operations. This station is versatile and equal to an Oberth-class science vessel in many ways.
Although the station is capable of operating in the vacuum of space this modular construction can be placed on the surface of most class M planets as well. When installed on a Class M world the shuttles land on exterior landing pad, and when the station is on a planet with a harsher atmosphere the shuttles land in an enclosed shuttle bay version.
The Daystrom Institute designed the Station in the thoughts of longer-term science studies and the families of the science teams. Many of the science teams could spend three years without any contact with the Federation.
Additional defensive measures as orbital defense satellites are deployed to supplement the stations own weapons costing the station no power. Ops controls these satellites remotely.
Every three to six weeks a supply ship arrives to deliver supplies and exchange personnel and their families.
Creation Notes: This is roughly designed off the station depicted in Star Trek The Next Generation episode “Home Soil” and the latest comic book IDW publishing Star Trek the Next Generation “Intelligence Gathering.” In deciding what the station was going to be equal to the Oberth-class came to mind, as I wanted it to reflect the size as well as the level of science that Oberth-class maintains.
I figured that the station could easily have subterranean storage areas carved out of solid rock by the Starfleet Corp of Engineers. If wished the there could be additions such as a greenhouse (Air/hydroponics) facility attached to the station supplementing the replicators.
Additional Shuttlecraft, on a class-M world the additional shuttlecraft are parked near by the facility within walking distance. Generally there is no need for more than one per station but two can be maintained adequately.
