    Daysrom Science Stations

We were planning to do a short series where the players would be on a planet surface. Jewel came up with the idea of a science stations and Dave and I decided on the latest version seen in the latest comic book from IDW publishing Star Trek the Next Generation “Intelligence Gathering.” This is a generic version of the station.

Station Data: Designed by the Daystrom Science Institute the Stations is a surface mounted installation located on hundreds of planets. Many variations of the station have been created, Computer research, medical science, to Terraforming operations. This station is versatile and equal to an Oberth-class science vessel in many ways.

Although the station is capable of operating in the vacuum of space this modular construction can be placed on the surface of most class M planets as well. When installed on a Class M world the shuttles land on exterior landing pad, and when the station is on a planet with a harsher atmosphere the shuttles land in an enclosed shuttle bay version.

The Daystrom Institute designed the Station in the thoughts of longer-term science studies and the families of the science teams. Many of the science teams could spend three years without any contact with the Federation.

Additional defensive measures as orbital defense satellites are deployed to supplement the stations own weapons costing the station no power. Ops controls these satellites remotely.

Every three to six weeks a supply ship arrives to deliver supplies and exchange personnel and their families.

Creation Notes: This is roughly designed off the station depicted in Star Trek The Next Generation episode “Home Soil” and the latest comic book IDW publishing Star Trek the Next Generation “Intelligence Gathering.” In deciding what the station was going to be equal to the Oberth-class came to mind, as I wanted it to reflect the size as well as the level of science that Oberth-class maintains.

I figured that the station could easily have subterranean storage areas carved out of solid rock by the Starfleet Corp of Engineers. If wished the there could be additions such as a greenhouse (Air/hydroponics) facility attached to the station supplementing the replicators.

Additional Shuttlecraft, on a class-M world the additional shuttlecraft are parked near by the facility within walking distance. Generally there is no need for more than one per station but two can be maintained adequately.

    This looks really great....

What does it look like - a domed structure?
I can`t recall what the station looked like in Homesoil and i haven`t had a chance to take a glimpse at the comic yet.

Your design is intended primarly for Frontier research isn`t it?

I asume a installation in a city would go without Defensive systems. I'm also not sure if all of these installations would be armed at all. I just think of the Regula I Station which does not appeared to have been armed at all. And it was one of the most sensitive research Projects undertaken at that time.

I though it was seated up against the rocky clift in the show. I'll have to dig out the show and take a look at them. There is an eposode that the stationlooks like that of the comic. But it looks good for the over view.

Here is the idea that I had for the station. It was an artistics version of the station.

Way cool, Omega1967. I had always wished there was more done with the surface complex rules for SD. Thanks for sharing!

When I get a chance I will put up some more that are from a series of surface stations. Until then here is a page of surface facilities for a colony world.

    Description notes:
Data: Ex-cultural anthologist tend to use the duck blind to hide close to the subject that they wish to observe without interfering in their development. The Holoemeters hide the outpost. The Holographic shrouds typically making it look much like that as a natural land formation.

Starfleet has used these duck blinds thousands of times over the distance of the Federation explored expanse. Many of the other species use a similar Duck Blind to observe less developed races or as a spy outpost.

Unless the Heloemeters fails the Duck Blind will remain hidden from the culture being observed. Most of the Federation Duck Blinds are unarmed and lack shields in most situations.

The Duck Blind usually has a small vessel within range in case of emergencies. These ships are capable of beaming the entire station out and replacing the original land formation that is simulated by the holoemiters.

Many of the systems on the stations are similar to that of standard shuttlecrafts. There are variations of the systems that can be installed to assist the scientist’s observations.

Here is a larger version of the Science Station. It is easily equal to a Galaxy-class Starship in some ways and surpassing it in other ways. Lightly shielded and defended as a science station is not a military facility needing heavy weapons. additional weapons such as remote phaser stations can be located about the area.
