We have seen a few Starfleet officers working in shipyards, but myself I'd rather stick with something posted way, way, way, way back in Aug. 2001:

Dan Gurden (posted Aug. 12 2001)

    Civilian Yard Worker

    Engineering, Material (choose two) 2 (3) (3)
    Engineering, Systems (choose) 2 (3)
Personal Equipment (Construction Equipment) 1 (2)
    Vehicle Operation (Workbee) 1 (2)

    Computer (choose) 1 (2)
    Dodge 1
    History (Federation) 1 (2)
    Language(s): Federation Standard 1
    Science, Physical (Physics) 1 (2)

    Zero-G Training +2
I guess a mix a match of civilian yard workers and the handfull of Starfleet crew assigned to a Fleet Yard could make for an interesting session or two. . .

    Damn, I love ICON.

I like the tours. I know you can just spend the 10 or 5 DP freely, but personally I like seeing what other people come up with, sure as anything someone always has something you didn't think of & you have a bunch of new ideas and such from it !

I'm with you on ICON, I still prefer it, especially with tweaks from fans and other games to help flesh things out or improve them.

I'll have a few more new Tours to add once I have some free time. Anyone else got some ideas for Tours to add? Let's see 'em!

I posted a bunch of Romulan ones, Tal Shiar specifically waaay back. Did an early life package or two and a pile of overlays. Tal Shiar Assassin, Occupation Command Censor and Troops, Tal Shava & Teth Kora (sp?) troops ... I'll see if I'd done anything else Tours wise for Starfleet or anyone else

What about some Languages/communications missions packages just as Hoshi Sato in Enterprise or Uhura in TOS?

Here is an idea of Science (Communications Officer) Career Overlay:

    Perception +1

    Computer (Random) 2 (3)
    Personal Equipment (Random) 1 (2)
    Language
    Federation Standard 1
    Any other 1
    Sciences, Social (Random) 2 (3)
    Shipboard Systems (Communications) 2 (3)

    Dodge 1
    Administration (Random) 1 (2)
    Energy Weapon (Random) 1 (2)
    Law (Starfleet Regulations) 1 (2)
Engineering, Systems (Communications Systems) 1 (2)
    Planetside Survival (Random) 1 (2)
    Athletics (Random) 1 (2)
    Vehicle Operations (Shuttlecraft) 1 (2)

    Language Ability +2
    Eidetic Memory +3

I nearly ended to update Reliant's program with the packages just above.

I like the idea of a communications specific specialist.

Maybe consider dropping Eidetic memory and adding another level of languages, leave the advantage as an individual choice.
Another thing to consider based on the CODA SOM communications person would be Physical Sciences (Mathematics) and maybe Espionage (Cryptography) for their work with codes and such.
Could drop the Social Science and just pick up that and things like culture & history through tours ...
The SOM entry for CODA has them as Ops as opposed to science.

I never really liked how TNG era stuff just all of a sudden lumped so much between Worf (Tactical, Security, Communications, Sensors) and Data at Ops, and just dropped the whole idea of a science officer (strange to me given Starfleet being an exploratory organization) and communications.

Somewhere around here is a Communications Officer Overlay based on Sato. It would need some tweeks to be more general, as it was very ST:E centered. There was also the Communications Officer Overlay from the LUG ST: TOS Corebook too.

    Ah, here we go:

    Lancer (posted May 23 2002)

    COMMUNICATIONS

Shipboard Systems (Communicator and Translator) 2 (3) (3)
    Systems Engineering (Communications) 1 (2)
    Administration (choose) 1 (2)
Personal Equipment (Communicator and Translator) 2 (3) (3)
Language, Any Two at 1 OR Any One at 2
    Persuasion (Debate) 0 (1)

Athletics OR Unarmed Combat (choose) 1(2)
    Computer (choose) 1 (2)
    Dodge 1
Energy Weapons (EM Pistol) 1 (2)
    First Aid (Humans) 0 (1)
History (Earth OR History of Spaceflight) 0 (1)
    Language (English) 1
    Law (Starfleet Regulations) 1 (2)
Planetary Survival (choose Specialization) 1 (2)
    Vehicle Operations (Shuttlecraft) 1 (2)
That's actually a point short, and I think it should probably have the Language Ability Advantage seeing how the position seemed to be a lot more than just opening communicaitons channels. The Comm Officer also acted as translator!

Is the Communication officer more "Science" or "Operation" personnel? As there is a special duty post for them that exist no more after TNG, it's a good question indeed. For myself I think it's more Science than Operation.

Another thing to consider based on the CODA SOM communications person would be Physical Sciences (Mathematics) and maybe Espionage (Cryptography) for their work with codes and such.
Perhaps things like cryptography are more a specific kind of training (Starfleet Intelligence Com?) than a part of the "regular" Communication Officer Career package? I believe that could be better as a part of a tour of duty pack. (If someone has ideas...)

Maybe consider dropping Eidetic memory and adding another level of languages, leave the advantage as an individual choice.
Ok, I agree, let's do it!

I think that Universal Translator, Communicators, Traduction Matrix and other "communications devices" are a part of the whole "Communication Systems" of a ship and that'a not necessary to make another specialisation.

(Sorry for the mistakes, as I'm not a communication officer, english is not my native language )

Your English is fine, droidscotty. Couldn't even tell it wasn't your first language. Where ya from?

I think a Comm Officer is more an Ops assignment, not sure about ST: ENT but I'm sure on ST: TOS the Comm Officers wore red like the engineers and security.

RealPity, ever do Tours or Training Packages for Klingons? Someone had a few way back when. I remember they had a list of skills for "Klingon Great House" and another for "Klingon Lesser House." I should try to find those.

In ENT, Hoshi has a blue line on is jacket, making her a science officer. Engineers, security and Ops personnel have red one (as red and yellow uniform are inverted between TOS era and TNG era)

Cool, I think we have a hand full of French speakers here. There was a thread that was in nothing but French at one time. Sad to say I only know one language, so I have no idea what they were saying.

You know, that would make a lot of sense--at that time the Comm Officers were more than just opening channels; they were linguists and thus true scientists.

    I think so.

See the thread "Files for BrianK" for an updated version of Reliant's Program inlcuding packages from this thread, "FIS Academy" and "Revising Medical Overlays"
